Top 5 Free To Play Games on Steam

Picking a game to play in the crowded free to play market can be a difficult task. To help you choose how to invest your time we rounded up the best free to play games on steam.

Path of Exile

Path of Exile is a top down free to play action rpg. Considered by many as the successor to Diablo 2, POE is a deep immersive experience. As similar games in the genre, in POE you pick a class, you kill mobs, complete quests, level up and upgrade your gear. What makes POE really stand out is the incredible depth it offers. With just one look at POE’s passive skill tree you will know what I’m talking about. Other than the massive skill tree there are also many other ways to build your character, from specific gear choices to permanent quest rewards based on your actions. POE offers a lot of depth and hundreds if not thousand of free to play hack and slash goodness to those brave enough to dig in and learn.

Warframe

Warframe is a free to play 3rd person co-op shooter. In Warframe you play as a bad-ass space ninja able to dispatch enemies in various ways. What makes Warframe shine is the amount of content and customization it offers. There are a vast number of weapons and warframes to choose from, each with its own abilities and uses. I recently reviewed warframe and found it truly worthy of your time. You can check out our full review over here.

Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 is a free to play team shooter. TF2 has been around for what seems like the dawn of time but it is still one of the best shooters out there. With regular content updates and a massive player base, TF2 isn’t going anywhere soon. Arguably the game that inspired Overwatch and many other modern team shooter, TF2 is most definitely worth checking out if you’re into shooters at all.

One of the best shooters out there

Dota 2

Dota 2 is the official sequel to the popular warcraft 3 mod DOTA (Defense of the Ancients). It is one of the biggest games on the planet and you most likely have heard about it. But just in case you don’t know what I’m talking about. Dota 2 is a MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena), a 5V5 game that incorporates pvp and pve elements into every match. Two teams of five battle for control of various map resources with the end objective of destroying your opponents base. If you never played a MOBA, Dota 2 will be a good place to start.

Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla is a 2D free to play fighting game. What makes Brawlhalla stand out for me is first and foremost it’s art style. The game is colorful and beautiful and it straddles the line between cute and vicious looking characters beautifully. Other than the great art style, Brawlhalla offers fast 2D brawling action with mechanics reminiscent of Smash Bros. The game has a selection of over 30 characters and new ones are added regularly. Overall Brawlhalla is a great fighter and you should check it out if you’re looking for some brawling action.

That’s it for now. There are many other great free to play games but these are the ones I feel stand out from the crowd. Let me know what you think on our facebook!

Heavy Metal Machines makes us ask questions. What happens when you mix heavy metal music, Mad Max and Rocket League together? The answer is a fast paced, free to play action PVP game set in a post-apocalyptic world with a rocking soundtrack.

Released on Steam this past January, the game is attracting a lot of attention and for good reason. The premise of Heavy Metal Machines involves cars made for destruction. And in teams of four, players get to blow each other up in fun ways during matches. So what’s so good about Heavy Metal Machines? Read our review below to find out.

A Golden Concept

At first glance, Heavy Metal Machines may look like a MOBA rip off of Rocket League. But that’s a far-fetched idea. Heavy Metal Machines is in a league of it’s own and it all comes down to the uniqueness of the gameplay. Both PVP match modes Play and Practice have the same objective. In teams of four, your tream must collect the bomb in the middle of the map and destroy the opponent’s base by dropping the bomb there.

The first team to do this three times will win the game. However, only one player can carry the bomb, so the other players must interrupt them by firing their car’s weapons and setting off traps, which are unique to the vehicles they pic. When it comes to controls, Heavy Metal Machines isn’t complicated, and offers support for controllers too. Left clicking will move the vehicle, and steering is done with the mouse. There are dedicated keys for firing abilities, so it feels like a MOBA without actually being one.

If Cars Could Kill

What truly makes the gameplay work is the cars in Heavy Metal Machines. Built for destruction, there are three car classes to pick from. Transporters are the fastest, and usually are the ones that fetch and deliver the bombs. Think of them as the strikers in a football game. They score goals. The Support cars make sure that team mates don’t take too much damage and repairs them, while the Interceptors are the damage dealers. All the cars have unique abilities and designs, and players can level them up the more they play. Higher ranked cars can unlock special missions and more customization options too.

Throughout a match, players will earn cash for every kill, and can buy upgrades on the spot to beef up their firepower. After each match, more currency is awarded for performance and winning, which can be used to purchase better cars in the shop. Heavy Metal Machines does a good job at keeping players sucked in through the gameplay and the meta progression.

I Like Your Attitude

The real feel good factor and why I am so hooked to Heavy Metal Machines is probably down to the excellent presentation. The game oozes with attitude and it rubs off in the graphics, art style and music. Even the car designs are great and over the top, which totally fits in to the post apocalyptic world that developers Hoplon are trying to create.

While aesthetics are pleasing, other parts of the game should be commended too. For example, the lack of pay to win elements in the game is great. It gives all players a fair shot at progressing forward to buy the best cars without real money. This makes the community equal parts fair and competitive.

The Final Verdict

It’s still early days for Heavy Metal Machines, and the potential to grow is huge. Even right now, the game is only in Early Access on Steam with loads more features yet to be released. Among these are Rank matches for PVP.

The free to play factor will also help the game greatly, allowing players to jump in and be rewarded for the time invested. Overall, Heavy Metal Machines is creating a gaming category of its own, so keep an eye out for this game. It will rock your socks of.

For fans of games like World Of Tanks, there’s a brand new game in town and it’s called Dreadnought. Dreadnought is currently in open beta and from what I’ve seen and experienced, it is looking like a great game. Dreadnought is an 8 versus 8 action strategy MMO where players control huge capital warships. In similar fashion to games like World of Tanks and World of Warships, Dreadnought utilizes familiar mechanics. Let’s dive in further to see if Dreadnought is a worthy challenger to the established titles in the genre. Here’s our full review!

It’s All About The Ships

At the heart of the game are the ships and there are five classes of ships. Each class is unique to a play style, such as support for repairing team mates or artillery for long ranged damaged. What I liked about the ships was that they each had a distinct job to do in every match, which made experimenting with them fun. Controlling the ships are pretty easy as well, and they can fire primary, secondary and utility weapons at enemy ships.

After every match, points are rewarded for playing but you’ll get bonus for winning of course. Those points are then used to research any one of three tech trees to upgrade your existing ship. The higher you go down the tiers, the better ships you can unlock too. So very quickly, Dreadnought becomes all about advancing your profile as soon as possible to get the best ships.

Ready, Aim, Fire

Combat in Dreadnought is where things get really interesting. Players can queue in the game’s matchmaking mode which does a fairly good job. You won’t be paired with anyone that’s more than two ranks away from you, which makes things balanced. There are also several game modes to play, such as team death matches or free for all. Once in the match, the fun begins. Everyone on your team will scramble towards the center of a beautifully designed map, which could take place on the surface of a planet or in space.

Once you spot an enemy ship, you have to aim your target cross hairs at it and fire with everything at your disposal. Chip away at the health bar and finally you’ll get to watch the ship go down in flames, which is always satisfying. Players with experience in games like World Of Tanks will no doubt find the combat second nature, as you’ll pretty much be doing the same thing. Scout ships will zoom ahead to find enemies, while artillery vessels stay back to take pop shots. The heavy and medium dreadnoughts will engage in-combat everywhere on the map. It’s total chaos, and that’s the best part.

The Final Verdict

For a free to play game, you can’t argue about the value when there’s potential for many nights of fun. If you’re a fan of spaceships and air battles, then Dreadnought is the game for you. Expect to see microtransactions  in-game, and while there are a few things that we didn’t like such as the console port graphics, it’s the action and strategy elements of the combat that makes this game worthwhile. Overall, Dreadnought is a solid MMO and we totally recommend getting some friends together to conquer the skies.

Developed by BigPoint, Dark Orbit has been around for a decade, since 2006. Since its release, the game has registered almost 90 million players worldwide. Despite the fact it did not make major news, it is still pretty successful on its own. Set out on a space exploration and circle the dark corners of the universe that is Dark Orbit. Meet creatures of another planet, unknown enemies and riches beyond your imagination.

Gameplay and concept

Dark Orbit features a non-targeting combat system where players circle around their enemy, dodging attacks and firing lasers to demolish them. While players have the option to play the game entirely on player-versus-environment (PvE), the main attraction is of course, the player-versus-player (PVP). It is where you, as the player, get to show off all your hardwork and endeavours on achieving your stats and ship. Of course, there are also players who buy their own ships, but more on that later.

Players join a single faction, out of three and battle their way out on the ranks to dominate the universe. This is the constantly occurring world event. Meanwhile, for fun amongst your teammates or anonymous players; take your pick in the jackpot arena where the winner gains a large jackpot for their fortuitous and brave victory. Gather your crew and go on a team death match to show whose side is better. Take on the invasion mode, much like survival match; the longer you stay, the greater the rewards. There is also the capture feature and much more.

Not noob-friendly, PVP-oriented and bullies lurking behind meteorites.

While the game was pretty popular back in the days, this would also prompt veteran players to be more violent or dominant towards new players. It is a kill or be killed phenomenon. As most players would not only like to show off their new ships but also show them who is boss around here.

Many players suffer from being “one-shotted” or bullied by pro players the moment they step foot on an open-PVP area. Of course, there are those who justify their actions by shooting only those new players who pay by store, in order to get ahead of everyone else. While developers insisted that players have the freedom to do whatever they want, this is certainly unacceptable.

Broken Auction system & pay-to-win system.

The auction house or much like a market place is certainly flawed in every sense. The game was supposedly to display a bidding feature whereby players place a deposit to bid on an item of interest. However, if the player loses the bid, the money is not returned to them. That’s a scam, ain’t it?

As expected of a long running game, maintaining it and making profits is a tough thing. So as usual, the game usually favours the veteran players and long-time committed ones to gain more out of the cash shop. If they are able to pay more for the content and upgrades, they would certainly play more of the game than quit and finding a new game.

Summary

All in all, it’s a pretty decent game, all packed into a single browser. It gives off the old school arcade vibe with a mix of MMO in it. My advice is get a bunch of friends to play the game, and you won’t have any trouble. In fact, it is much more fun!

Players have the option of engaging in ground based or aerial combat; there are over 350 aircraft in the game and over 140 tanks in the game. Each unit is realistic and based on real vehicles that existed during World War II which includes unique statistics for each one. The vehicles in the game are highly customizable and players can upgrade them by researching new technologies; there are three main upgrade areas which allows player to create build that suits their play-style. While each upgrade does require several research points to unlock, it can be done instantly using premium currency.

Most of the cash store is for cosmetic items however there is a clear advantage for players who purchase premium currency; it’s also possible to purchase new vehicles and perks which impact game-play. Players can also pay for a Premium account which provides experience boosts.

There are three unique game-modes open to players: Arcade Battles, Realistic Battles and Simulator Battles. Arcade Battles is the casual mode, the controls and user interface is much more simple which makes it perfect for new players. The Arcade mode also offers large scale team-based warfare where up to 32 players can battle in the same instance.

Realistic Battles is for more experienced players as it requires players to return to base in order to reload their vehicle; players are limited to selecting vehicles from one nation and the mode also allows for historical battle reenactments. Players battle in team-based combat where the controls are much more detailed and more game mechanics, such as physics, are active.

The final game-mode is Simulator Battles which is the most realistic mode and demands that players use a joystick or game-pad to play the game. In this mode, only first person view is available as players fight for their selected country.

War Thunder provides solid game-play and is highly realistic almost to a fault; it features some of the best combat around for this genre of game and has a strong community behind that supports both casual and competitive play. While parts of the game can seem to be pay to win, all game-play changing items can be earned in the game.

There are over 350 unique vehicles in the game for players to select from; these are spread across the five different classes: Light Tanks, Medium Tanks, Heavy Tanks, Tank Destroyers and Self-Propelled Guns. Each class in the game has a specific role to play in battle however, players can customize their vehicles with various mechanical components and cosmetic items.

Players have five main game-modes to select from however, the Random Battle mode is split into three game types where players battle in 15v15 games; Random Battle can place players into Standard Battle, Assault or Encounter Battles. The Standard Battle type throws players into a team death-match style game where there is an added element of base capture. During Assault, players switch between attack and defend as one team fights to protect their base; the final type is Encounter Battles which is similar to Assault, in this mode players race to claim a neutral base.

Various game-modes are dedicated to clans or parties which reflect the strong competitive community that’s driving the game; the game features a dedicated eSports community where regular weekly tournaments take place. Players are able to practice in custom lobbies with the Team Training mode and clans can even battle in skirmishes with the Strongholds mode.

Combat in the game is focused around a single main gun and most vehicles use a 360 degree turret that gives players a wide view of the terrain; each map has different terrain however camouflage is an important game-play aspect. World of Tanks is an extremely strategic game where players must avoid being spotted by using cover while also looking for the enemy. The game is focused on team-play and utilizing the different types of tanks correctly can give players an edge so that the team can advance safely as a unit or strategically sneak up on the enemy.

After a match, vehicles may need to be repaired to keep them in perfect condition; new consumables can be purchased and ammo needs to be restocked. This can be expensive to do despite the fact that players are given monetary rewards at the end of matches.

World of Tanks is one of the best games in this MMO genre; it features strategic and team-based gameplay that forces teams to co-ordinate their movements so they can approach the enemy team. The competitive eSports scene is extremely popular and is well supported by the developers with several gamemodes focused on clans and teams. This may not be an easy game to learn but it is rewarding and offers high replay value at all levels of play.
