Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment announced that the Finals of the Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournaments (OT) #5 and #6, are both moving up one day earlier. The tournaments will now be held May 2-3 and May 30-31 respectively, in order to better fit competitors’ schedules and those able to watch online. The next event, OT #4, will occur as planned this Saturday, April 18 and end on Monday, April 20, with the competition being broadcast on the Apex Legends Twitch and YouTube channels.

The Apex Legends Global Series has seen significant tournament viewership growth, tripling reported Average Minute Audience (on Twitch and YouTube) from OT #2 to OT #3 in just 14 days. This was accomplished through EA and Respawn’s ability to quickly pivot, host multiple remote online tournaments and optimize their broadcast for cloud-based production, connecting players and viewers through play and action-packed entertainment.

“We’re always seeking to better serve our players and fans, and that has never been more true than it is today,” said John Nelson, Competitive Gaming Division Commissioner on Apex Legends. “We wanted to give our community the opportunity to continue to play more Apex Legends and get competitions back up and running as soon as possible while ensuring the safety of all players, viewers and staff. The early response has been outstanding, and we’re looking forward to bringing great entertainment to even more fans with our upcoming tournaments.”

Committed to continuing the Apex Legends Global Series while everyone is safe at home, EA created a cloud-based broadcast production capability – operated 100 percent remotely – to deliver high-quality competitive experiences online. EA was the first company to use this new cloud-based technology for an online broadcast when the Finals for OT #2 were aired back on March 23. This successful roll-out helped lead to the addition of three more Online Tournaments. OT#3 took place April 4 & 6 and offered Apex Legends Global Series points to those fighting their way up the leaderboard and $100K in prizes, a trend that will continue through the end of May.

Online tournaments are averaging more than 600 teams. Among the favorites in OT #4 are recently dethroned, 5x-champions TSM as well as top contenders Complexity, Team Liquid, Rogue, Luminosity Gaming, Gambit Esports, Natus Vincere, Virtus.pro, and North. Large scale Apex Legends Online Tournaments are just one of the many ways EA is bringing a positive impact to people’s lives through its Stay Home. Play Together. initiative.

The Finals of the upcoming OT#4 in Europe and North America will be streamed live on the Apex Legends Twitch and YouTube channels on April 20. Notable teams with large scale, personal fan-followings can watch their favorites compete throughout the entire tournament, while other influencers can leverage the feed to provide their own personal commentary atop the broadcast.

It’s been just over a year since Apex Legends launched – a surprise free to play battle royale game from Respawn Entertainment and EA, which has since become a staple alongside Fortnite and PUBG. Not played it yet? Here’s why you should check it out.

This Is As Titanfall As It Gets

Are you still waiting for Titanfall 3? Forget it, Respawn has said they’re not working on it. Apex Legends is here instead, and has been in-development since TF2. The game is set in the Titanfall universe and features familiar battle royale mechanics when it comes to winning conditions and map dynamics, but that’s where the similarities end. Apex Legends is a lot more sophisticated than the run of the mill battle royale game. It takes a heavier emphasis on gameplay to make a masterable, learnable game with deep strategy, and they’ve gone about that by omitting much of what made the Titanfall games fun. There are no wall running and double jumps here, but that makes the game less quick-paced and more about strategic squad shooting, which in a weird way, makes sense.

Engaging Squad Play Systems

At the heart of it all is the squad play – a group of three players each controlling a hero in matches that pits 20 squads against each other. To facilitate this, Respawn has embedded several key gameplay functions to make sure communication and teamwork are more important than chaos. For starters Apex Legends has a ping system where players can mark objects, locations or enemy players. It’s a nifty little feature that’s bound to your mouse wheel button to click. And honestly, not many games uses that button at all, and it works in Apex Legends flawlessly. Team mates can mark loot containers, enemy players or where they want to go. Additionally, many cliches from the battle royale genre has been refined here. Yes your squad jumps out from the sky are the beginning, but a squad leader is elected randomly, and he or she decides where to land. When a spot is picked, all three players travel in unison, unless you want to be a lone ranger and break off. Note, there is no solo or duo modes. It’s all 3-man squads.

Heroes To Latch Onto

The biggest remix from the battle royale genre is the heroes you play as. These are personalities that are fun and each represents a class style. You have tank-types, pure damage dealers, rogues and of course healers and medics. This is a really nice change from playing un-named nobodies in every other battle royale. You have a reason to latch onto a class or personality, very much like popular hero shooters such as Overwatch of Paladins. This mixture makes matches a tad bit more interesting as heroes can give off the cuff one liners when you kill another player, and just hearing their general chatter is fun. The progression system when it comes to heroes are mostly cosmetic in terms of skins, banners and other aesthetics. Right now at launch there’s 6 heroes you can play as for free, while the other two are locked behind a paywall.

Customization At Heart

Let’s not kid ourselves, this is to be expected for a free to play battle royale shooter. The many gun categories, hero outfits and other “fluff” that makes up the bulk of customization options in Apex Legend’s store in-game. Players can unlock most of them via three ways, which are Crafting Materials, Legend Tokens and Apex Coins. Apex Coins is what you get for paying real money on Origin for them, and are widely used to get everything faster, but as none of them are advantageous upgrades it’s not pay to win. Otherwise, simply playing matches, and leveling up your profile rewards you with currency and event cosmetic lootboxes.

Free and Fair Model

Ultimately though, the focus on Apex Legends is definitely on the gameplay. It’s different and refreshing for battle royale fans, and shooter fans will find it enjoyable too. The learning and mastery curve is high, but the foundations are there for a game that’s best enjoyed in the long term with plans for future maps, more heroes and possibly more game modes in the pipeline. Considering all that, the game is fully free to play which is always a bonus, but it’s also fair too. Your skill with gun-play, the effectiveness of your squad and overall experience with these hero classes is what will get you through Apex Legends, and that’s how most of these games should be. The real disappointment here though for non battle royale fans, is that this isn’t the Titanfall 3 that we were hoping for.

Beginning April 7, Respawn will invite Apex Legends players to follow Bloodhound’s trail in the upcoming “The Old Ways” Lore Event. One of the greatest game hunters the Frontier has ever seen, Bloodhound, will receive their own Town Takeover on World’s Edge, where players will need to battle ferocious Prowlers for their chance at high-tier loot. Exclusive cosmetics will be available to players that complete the Old Ways Event’s daily challenges with even more The Old Ways-themed items available through the Direct Purchase Shop. The Old Ways event runs through April 21.

Learn more about Bloodhound’s path from small village to the Apex Arena in the latest installment of the Stories from the Outlands, “The Old Ways” trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCXOnxM8sdY

Below is a quick recap of all the activities players can look forward to:

  • Duos & Kings Canyon – Starting on April 7, Duos will be permanently added to the game alongside Trios, along with a permanent map rotation that gives players the ability to play Duos or Trios on Kings Canyon and World’s Edge.
  • Town Takeover – Bloodhound’s Trials – An enclosed area in the northwest portion of World’s Edge, Bloodhound’s Trials boasts a large population of prowlers. Teams can battle against a hoard of prowlers to claim high-tier loot as a reward. But players must beware of the most dangerous game: fellow Legends scavenging goods for themselves. Exploring the enclosure with a certain hunter on your side will be most rewarding.

  • Direct Purchase Shop – Event-exclusive legendary and rare skins inspired by the aesthetics and themes of The Old Ways digital short will be available in the shop. The Old Ways Event also marks the return of the Legendary Hunt Skins. All 8 of the original Legendary Hunt Skins will be on offer for direct purchase in addition to 2 recolored variants of the Wraith and R-301 skins that were exclusive to battle pass owners.

Apex Legends is one of 2019’s success stories. Practically emerging out of nowhere to challenge Fortnite and PUBG, the game now has got massive plans for the e-sports arena. EA and Respawn has announced the Apex Legends Global Series. What is it all about? Let’s find out.

Apex Legends Global Series

The series is comprised of online and live events for PC players who will compete for a prize purse of more than $3 million. The Apex Legends Global Series will initially feature 12 global live events, either self-executed by EA and Respawn or produced by notable esports tournament organizers PGL and GLL.

“Competition is at the heart of Apex Legends,” said Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn Entertainment. “We expect that esports will play a big role in the future of Apex Legends and it all starts here, with the Apex Legends Global Series. We look forward to seeing who, out of our millions of players, will become true legends of the arena.”

Global Series Eligibility

The Apex Legends Global Series is an inclusive, open ecosystem created to make stars of all players. Residents of one of the more than 60 eligible countries who meet minimum age, PC system requirements, and other eligibility requirements can compete.* The competitive journey for many will start with online competition, with competitors potentially advancing to live, regional Challenger Events and global Premier Events. Players will earn Apex Legends Global Series Points for their performances in online and certain live events and those atop the standings will be invited to the four Apex Legends Global Series Majors, the highest competitive live event tier.

Apex Legends is one of the most impactful launches in videogame history and it possesses immense esports potential,” said John Nelson, Apex Legends Competitive Gaming Commissioner. “Through close communication with our community, we’ve built an accessible Apex Legends ecosystem where any player can become a potential star while the world watches our unique, entertaining take on Battle Royale esports.”
The first three Majors will each feature 100 three-player squads from around the world. The fourth Major, the Apex Legends Global Series Championship, is the grand finale. Only the top 60 Apex Legends Global Series teams in the world will be invited to battle for $1 million in prizes and the title of Apex Legends Global Series World Champion.

Tournament Format

All four Majors will feature the Apex Legends exclusive Match Point format, which debuted at the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational in September to positive reception. Match Point requires teams in the Finals to reach a points threshold through a combination of match placement and accumulated kills. Apex Legends is the only Battle Royale esport to feature this uniquely exciting end game mechanic.

The first Apex Legends Global Series competition is an Online Tournament taking place on 25th January 2020. Registration will open for the event in early January. Many of the Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournaments will be produced from the newly built EA Broadcast Center at company headquarters. Subsequent Apex Legends Global Series details will be announced soon.

Apex Legends is a brand new free to play Battle Royale shooter from Respawn Entertainment, the folks behind Titanfall and Titanfall 2. With rumors of a new Titanfall game rampant this week, the studio teased a new game ahead of leaked news regarding Apex Legends. The game has now just gone live on EA’s store Origin, and can be downloaded and played. Having gone through the game, here’s our thoughts on Apex Legends and why it deserves your attention.

This Is As Titanfall As It Gets

Are you still waiting for Titanfall 3? Forget it, Respawn has said they’re not working on it. Apex Legends is here instead, and has been in-development since TF2.
