For these MMORPGS, the rest of 2022 will be vital – they need current issues solved, more content, better communication, and most of all, player numbers to rise.

RIFT

When Trion Worlds become a part of Gamigo all those years ago, many RIFT players were cautiously optimistic. Prior to that, the 2009 launched MMORPG had just wrapped up an experimental classic server called RIFT Prime that proved popular, and saw many return to the game. The future looked bright, before it all went stale. RIFT hasn’t gotten any substantial new content in over 4 years. Earlier this year Gamigo said that a big update with new content would be coming in 2022, but it has been delayed. When it finally arrives, will it be enough to satisfy what’s left of the RIFT playerbase? This is one MMORPG that’s definitely on the rails and worth keeping an eye on.

Diablo Immortal

Remember the backlash Blizzard received when they announced that the next Diablo game would be a mobile MMORPG? Well, NetEase and Blizzard are gearing up to launch it on Android and iOS this summer, and they’ve done a pretty good job at weathering the storm thus far. The closed beta test was a massive success, and pre-registration numbers are looking good. If they can manage to sustain the hype post-launch, while maintaining a good game that’s catered for both Diablo and MMORPG enthusiasts, then it should be a big win.

Crowfall

Crowfall is in a sticky situation. Unlike other MMORPGs that go for a wider audience with the tried and tested PvE theme-park attractions and PvP content, Crowfall is primarily a PvP MMO with RvR modes that aren’t permanent. When it launched out of early access, things were looking good for awhile, but the issues began to show. Its crafting system was hugely complicated, and outside of prime hours, the Crowfall campaign maps were just empty with nothing to do for smaller groups or solo players. In fact, it isn’t solo friendly at all, which is something most modern MMORPG titles try to accomodate. In late 2021, developers ArtCraft sold everything to Monumental, an indie studio, and it is unsure if they would collaborate in the future. So where does that leave Crowfall? With player numbers dwindling and interest waning, Crowfall needs to push out something extraordinary in 2022.

New World

Amazon Game Studios has two MMORPGs on opposite trajectories. Lost Ark, which it helped publish in the West, is probably the most popular MMORPG of 2022, while New World, its flagship in-house developed MMORPG, is on a downward spiral. How did this happen? New World wasn’t even supposed to be this theme-park-ish MMORPG. It started out as a sandbox PvP survival MMO with the familiar crafting and territorial push-and-pull that offered GvG content. AGS decided to change that to make New World appeal to the masses, and here we are. New World’s launch issues are a whole different beast of course. Exploits, botting and cheating did little to help keep the many servers fair and playable, while the lack of roadmap and new content during the first three months after launch ensured that players left to return to their favorite MMORPGs, as New World had nothing else or fresh to offer. Therefore, 2022 will be a big year for New World if they want to get those player numbers raising again, which is vital for a buy to play MMORPG.

ArtCraft Entertainment, creators of the PvP MMO game, Crowfall, is lowering the price of the game and providing all new players a chance to try the game for free. Crowfall’s freemium plan provides new players a 10-day free trial. After that, players purchase the game for the low price of $14.99 and play forever. The new service comes as ArtCraft launches a major update today for Crowfall.

“We know that the free trial will be a huge draw for many MMO players,” said Gordon Walton, ArtCraft’s executive producer. “We’ve also made some very significant upgrades to the game in this latest update. We’ve streamlined the new player experience and we are now allowing for smaller scale PvP experiences. Crowfall was developed with large-scale PvP (100s of players) siege combat as a key goal and we achieved that. Now we’ve added smaller team size PvP options to accommodate the guilds our players are in. We listened to our player feedback and we are delivering what they have asked for.”

Guilds of 20-50 people can now siege and hold forts in Crowfall without being overrun by bigger guilds. Guilds of 10-25 can affect the game outcome by holding small forts, mines, and outposts and denying them to other factions. The game’s Alliance system has been expanded so smaller guilds can band together to take on even the biggest guilds on an even footing.

“Crowfall was created primarily with the idea of large-scale PVP siege combat as the focus,” said Walton. “While that is definitely fun for a certain subset of the audience, there are other groups of players who want to be able to play with their smaller guilds and not get obliterated. In an open world game, it is extremely difficult to encourage what seems like a fair fight from a small guild perspective.”

Additionally, the update streamlines the initial new player experience and adds a ‘fast pass’ new player experience for the impatient experts to get them to PvP as soon as possible. Other updated features include:

  • Dramatically improved chat user experience featuring player configurability and overall utility
  • New map features to support a host of new navigation and performance improvements
  • Campaign rewards for the guilds/factions which are much more valuable
  • Expanded our Crow recruit “buddy” program to provide more rewards to the buddy and player who invites them to the game
  • Significant improvements for the Eternal Kingdom and Crafting games
  • Added more quality-of-life elements from player requests

To kick off the update Crowfall is bringing back the ‘Decapathon’ event. Always a fan favorite, the event will run from November 8 into mid-December. Players unleash their axes to take the head of any enemy they defeat in PvP and then sacrifice those heads to the Gods. There is a ‘Decapathon’ leaderboard for this event so the most effective PvP players can be known to all!

ArtCraft Entertainment has announced its highly anticipated Throne War PvP game, Crowfall™, will launch commercially on July 6 and can be purchased from the website, Crowfall.com

An innovative new approach to MMO design, Crowfall breaks from the tradition of locking characters into a static, never-changing “realm” or “server,” allowing players to move freely between worlds, with each world offering a unique experience—different maps, different politics and different rules. These diverse worlds include The Dregs (massive Throne War campaign with forts, keeps and castles that support 100v100 sieges), God’s Reach (perpetual 3-faction battleground servers), the HungerDome™ (a 12 team, 60 player battle arena) and the Eternal Kingdoms (player-built worlds that offer guilds and monarchs the ability to terraform the terrain and construct spawning cities and massive strongholds).

Across all of the worlds in Crowfall, one key factor differentiates Crowfall: player agency.  Crowfall is a dynamic universe, where players control the direction of the game: cities will rise, castles will fall. Recruit an army and lay siege to your enemies. Hire an assassin to turn the tide of a campaign.  Form a band of mercenaries to raid your neighbor’s stronghold. The fate of the Dying Worlds will be determined by player decisions, choices that will reshape the battle and change the shape of this world, forever.

“Crowfall is such a unique project in so many ways,” explained J. Todd Coleman, creative director and co-founder of ArtCraft. “We set out to create a game for players who are looking for a more visceral, immersive experience. A game where the player’s world is not bounded by canned stories or scripted events. We are proud of, and humbled by, the level of passion and energy we have received from our community from the beginning. That support, that belief in what we are building, has been the critical piece in making Crowfall a reality.”

In advance of launch, ArtCraft is releasing a new animatic video, Eternal Heroes, Dying Worlds, produced in partnership with Powerhouse Animation Studios. The video introduces the origin of the Dying Worlds and the emergence of the Crows, divine champions who fight to earn glory, wealth and power in the name of the gods. Crowfall, the competitive Throne War MMO, announced its latest Game Update, The Revival, today! The Revival delivers a significantly expanded set of options players can choose from to create uniquely differentiated Crow character builds. The system offers players more options in how they play while forcing tougher choices at each decision point.

With The Revival release, Crowfall is introducing Domains. Domains offer players the choice of one of 15 different groups of bundled Disciplines, from which players can choose one (from a set of three) based on their chosen sub-class. Domains are themed around a style of play, for example, the “Domain of War” or the “Domain of Shadow.” Within the system, there may be Disciplines that appear in more than one Domain. To be more clear, let’s say you wanted the Ghost Army power. To get that, you need the “Grim Reaper” major Discipline. That Discipline is found in both the Plague and Death Domains… which makes them available to Assassins, Duelists, Rangers, Frostweavers, Knights, and Myrmidons.

Ultimately, the addition of Domains offers deeper specialization by virtue of how the Disciplines you gain in a Domain combine with your other powers and your promotion class. For example, you might have a single poison buff that allows you to apply poison to your enemy when you attack them. But if you choose a Domain focused on poisons and select the relevant Disciplines, you could stack additional poison buffs and apply them all simultaneously intensifying the impact. That benefit is gained by your choice of a Domain and specific Disciplines within it. Two players with the same sub-class and the same Domain may choose different Disciplines creating a broad set of combinations – even when choosing the same Domain and sub-class.

“This update is a tribute to our players as it was their feedback that led us to innovate on the system. The system empowers players to be the architect of their Crow’s unique build – the power is in the player’s hands, it is only limited by our players’ imaginations,” said J. Todd Coleman, creative director for the game.

Crowfall is currently in Beta and will continue to release new game updates as they continue on the path to launch. The Revival also includes unique Campaign Rewards, each campaign war will now reward winning teams with unique rewards at the close of the Campaign and lastly, players will also see the game take another step forward in performance optimization.

As Crowfall continues to iterate on its innovative Throne War PvP experience, interested gamers can join the battle by registering for the free Beta at Crowfall.com.

ArtCraft Entertainment has announced the official opening of Beta for their ground-breaking MMO, Crowfall. Invitations are being sent out to the first wave of beta testers. Successive waves of beta testers will be invited over the coming weeks and months.

“At the beginning of this project, we set out to make something really different,” explained ArtCraft co-founder and creative director J. Todd Coleman. “Virtual worlds have grown stale. They call them ‘theme park’ worlds for that reason; they are specifically designed to be unaffected by the decisions and actions of the players. We intend to change that, to offer a world where the players control the fate of this world. Beta is a critical step in our path to seeing that vision realized.”

Recognized as an innovative and inspired take on a virtual universe, Crowfall offers a dynamic universe of unique worlds where players are in control: claiming territory, conquering land, and forming deep political and social relationships. The universe boasts a variety of worlds (and Campaigns) with unique geographic rulesets designed to suit the playstyle and strengths of each guild or faction. The universe of Crowfall is in constant flux as player empires rise and fall, and no two worlds will ever be the same.

Early Beta groups will be invited starting today and the process continues in sequence with increasingly larger groups invited over time. ArtCraft has added a convenient notification to ensure players do not miss this highly anticipated invitation; registered players will see a green button appear on top of the website with the words “You’re Invited!”, when their Beta group opens. Players interested in joining the battle in the free closed beta should register now at Crowfall.com, if they haven’t already done so.

As a reminder, all backers have immediate (and permanent) access to all phases of testing.  Any Backer Pack (available at Crowfall.com) grants immediate entry to play now. For more information, visit Crowfall.com/Beta.

“I am proud of the effort that our team put forward to reach this point,” added Gordon Walton, co-founder and president. “It is exciting to be part of a group that is willing to take risks and push for real innovation.”

Playing MMORPGs on the PC will always be the best way to play. There, got that out of the way. In today’s world, MMO studios would be foolish to think that’s enough. World of Warcraft aside, making use of other platforms like consoles does a lot of good. Not only does it expands the reach of the game to a new playerbase, it also offers longevity and revenue opportunity. Games like TERA, FFXIV, Elder Scrolls Online and now Black Desert Online, have all capitalized on this to great success. With that in mind, which MMORPGs would we like to see hit the PS4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch in 2019?

Secret World Legends

Funcom’s shared RPG world Secret World Legends is a one of a kind MMO. From its horror themes to cult mythology and pop culture, players will definitely find the story and setting unique. Having relaunched itself in 2017, the game now utilized an action combat system akin to that of TERA and ESO, and would do well on consoles. Most of the gameplay and UI elements does in fact, look like it should be able to fit snugly on console commands and graphics. However, there’s a catch. Secret World Legends is still somewhat under the radar, and would need a magnificent marketing push to raise funds for a console port. That, or piggy back off another successful Funcom title again, like it did with Conan Exiles for the relaunch.

EVE Online

EVE Online remains one of the most popular space sci-fi sandbox games today. Others like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen may have shared the spotlight in recent times, but EVE reigns supreme. There’s no substitute for interstellar player-driven narratives and events. The constant backstabbing and turncoat-ing makes for great drama, and no doubt players would love to pilot their ships and grow their empires from the comfort of their living room couch.

Crowfall

Yes, Crowfall is still in pre-alpha and far from ready to launch. This sandbox throne wars simulator MMO features massive siege PvP warfare in a gorgeous world thanks to its art style. It’s progressed nicely too, and from previews and the pre-alpha which you can buy into right now, it’s obvious to see the improvements. Movement and animation is a lot better compared to a year ago, and the devs keep adding more new things like Races, and most recently have begun testing its Campaigns. This begs the question, why not aim for a console launch too? There aren’t many PvP centric MMO that focuses on RvR on consoles, and Crowfall will have the benefit of being one of the first.

2. Guild Wars 2

There is no bigger MMORPG besides World of Warcraft that console fans want on their machines than Guild Wars – both games. Guild Wars have become a franchise name in the genre because of its lush worlds, great story-telling and all round stellar MMORPG systems. The one thing it doesn’t have a shortage of however, is players. While the game’s combat system does look like it may suit consoles, it will be some time before ArenaNet thinks about console ports.

1. Star Wars the Old Republic

Arguably the biggest MMORPG IP on the market today, SWTOR unfortunately, has fallen from grace. The game’s lack of content and emphasis on promoting its in-game cash shop is a frustration for many loyal players. Are Bioware stretched thin due to other games being worked on? Regardless, a console version of SWTOR may just be the answer to reinvigorate the game and bring back players – both old and new to the galaxy far, far away.

Grand PvP Campaign MMO Crowfall Is Coming To Russia

Independent game developer ArtCraft Entertainment, Inc. announced today that they have entered into a formal partnership agreement with Innova Co. SARL to bring their flagship MMO title, Crowfall®, to Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

“Innova has achieved an amazing degree of success building and launching competitive Massively Multiplayer Online games in Russia and the CIS,” explained Gordon Walton, president and executive producer at ArtCraft Entertainment. “They have amassed more than 55-million players on the 4game network by offering some of the most engaging, successful MMOs in the world. Crowfall will be a perfect addition to the platform.”

A new type of massively-multiplayer experience, Crowfall is the first online Throne War, a dynamic virtual world where players take the role of kings, queens, mercenaries and assassins vying for supremacy in the quest for glory, wealth and power.

Alexander Harutyunyan, CEO of Innova, said “We are thrilled to be able to launch Crowfall to our very eager MMO player base in Russia and the CIS. And we are just as thrilled to be working with the ArtCraft team. They are a highly experienced team with a long track record of success and Crowfall is one of the most highly anticipated MMOs out there today.”

Crowfall differs from standard MMOs in that each server represents a single “campaign” with a unique map, unique rules, and a limited timeframe. Each campaign lasts only a few months before one guild or alliance conquers the map and wins, and the players move on to the next campaign.

“Gamers in the Russia/CIS territory are known to be hyper-competitive,” notes J. Todd Coleman, ArtCraft Entertainment CEO and chief creative officer. “Crowfall is a fantastic fit for this audience, as the nature of our game – the first online Throne War – will give them a chance to prove their dominance like never before.”

Crowfall has established itself as one of the most highly anticipated independently-developed online games in the world, raising more than $20 million in funding from backers, investors and partners.

Crowfall Opens Up Oceanic And Asian Servers For Early Access Testing

Calling all Crows, Crowfall is booting up new Oceanic and Singapore servers for players this week. Crowfall is still very much in the early access stages, with plans for a soft launch later in 2018. The good news is, if you are an owner of a $60 or so pledge package, then you can already jump in to play the game.

Therefore, if you’re in that part of the world and wanting to try out these new servers, act quick. The current campaigns will end on Wednesday. However, do expect more of these to pop up gradually in the lead up to the soft launch of the game.

The Sydney and Singapore Bloodbath servers will be for the PvP action, while the usual West Coast server is for crafters.
