DC Universe Online To Launch Earth 3 Episode On November 15th

DC Universe Online are bringing the latest episode, Earth 3, to the game next week. The episode will go live on November 15th. The update will introduce the Crime Syndicate – Earth 3’s evil version of the new Justice League.

Therefore, Earth 3 is set on an alternate universe of Earth where good is evil and evil is good. Some heroes such as Owlman, Ultraman and Superwomen are going to feature as well.

Earth 3’s content structure combines the best qualities of episodes and events from the past. That simply means there will be permanent and challenging content for end-game players with the best qualities of events (level-agnostic and limited-time access for all players). All in all, that does sound like a lot of fun, especially for veterans looking for fresh content.

According to the post, those looking for Ops and Raids will not be disappointed either. There’s new Open World Missions in Gotham, in addition to a new 2 player Op. Moreover, there’s two new 8-player raids in addition to 4-player alert.

When it comes to rewards, there’s plenty and all of it is listed in the official post. However, it is important to note that each version of the content will share loot locks. DCUO also will be removing the concept of elite progress points.

For more information on Earth 3, check out the official post here.

DCUO Is Ending PlayStation 3 Support On January 31st 2018

If you are a DC Universe Online player on the PS3, we have sad news. Daybreak will be ending the PlayStation 3 support for DCUO on 31st January 2018. The reasoning for shutting the game down on PS3 is quoted below.

“In order to deliver the highest quality experience to our players, we will focus our resources on further optimizing the game for PlayStation 4. While there is still time to continue exploring DCUO on the PS3, we want to give you advanced notice so you can prepare for these future changes.”

However, it’s not a bad thing if you also play on the PC or PS4. If you do own a PlayStation 4, all your player info, subscriptions, DLC purchases and game info will transfer automatically. Of course, you have to use the same PSN account in order to do so.

Daybreak also things you should get a PlayStation 4. “If you have not yet upgraded to the PlayStation 4, please consider doing so now, so that you can continue to enjoy the best DCUO experience without interruption.” Thus, you have just under 3 months to prepare.

For more information about this, do check out the official post here.

are going to be taking a look at the top 5, most underrated MMORPGS that are out there today. Tons of MMOs have come and gone, and there are a few that have been out for while, but have remained stagnant, or continues to fly under the radar compared the amount of publicity and hype their competitors get. Based on that criteria, we’ve selected our list from a pool of MMOs that have been out for at least three years, of the Triple AAA variety, but are not in the top 5 of most played or populated MMORPGs, despite being acknowledged by critics as good games.

#5 DC Universe Online

At number five, is DC Universe Online. Despite being a widely known IP and garnering good reviews from critics at launch, DC Universe Online continues to fly under the PC playerbase radar. For an MMORPG, DCUO doesn’t do a whole lot wrong in our opinion. It’s a free to play game that’s based of superheroes and villains from the DC comic universe. And for the most part, the game revolves around these characters through plot and story lines, without players actually playing as them.

At release, DCUO was a great alternative to the much beloved City of Heroes, which was the more popular of the two before it got shut down. DCUO is known for it’s pretty in-depth player character creator, allowing you to build the perfect hero – from costumes and outfits, to powers like flying, and finally, you’re able to choose a mentor type figure such as Superman or Batman, who will be the one handing you missions and stuff.

From a game play stand point, DCUO is action-combat based, with players using a smaller pool of skills compared to other MMOs to battle. The regions are authentic and let’s you visit authentic locations such as Gotham City and Metropolis. There are a bunch of quests to do, but the majority of your time will be spent in the main story line, with dungeons thrown in. It’s got a decent recipe for an MMORPG, so why do people still think it’s underrated? Well, we think that the dip in the PC playerbase for DCUO is very much down to the fact that the game released on the Xbox and Playstation in recent years. The gameplay feels a lot better with a controller for consoles than it does for the PC. So what must DCUO do the recapture it’s faltering PC player numbers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

#4 Star Trek Online

At number four, is Star Trek Online. STUO is another big IP on the list, developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Atari, before Cryptic shipped it off to Perfect World Entertainment in 2011. STO is as you’d expect, a pretty faithful MMORPG interpretation of the Star Trek Universe, set in the universe timeline of 2409, thirty years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis.

A lot of players flocked to Star Trek Online because of what it offered – a solid MMO story based on a beloved franchise, and space combat with ships that every player, will get as a captain. There was so much potential, and remember, this was released in 2010, a full year before Star Wars the Old Republic was released, so as you can imagine, space opera fans only had STO and EVE Online to sink their teeth into.

Seven years on, STO is still around, but it hasn’t really recaptured the magic and hype it generated outside of loyal Star Trek fans. New updates in the past few years have not really brought in new players, which is a worrying sign for any MMORPG. The graphics may seem dated today, but STO still has a lot to offer and that’s why it’s on our list of most underrated MMORPGs.

#3 Secret World Legends

At number three, is The Secret World aka, Secret World Legends. The story of how this game is still relatively unknown among the broad MMORPG player base should be studied and archived for all MMO developers and studios to reference in the future. When Funcom first announced The Secret World, there was a mixed buzz within the MMO community – no one knew what to make it of it. The game is set in a modern world with secret societies such as the Illuminati and Templars all vying for power. Myths and legends such as vampires, mummies and Cthulhu all exist, and formed the main narrative of the game.

When TSW finally got a launch date, it picked perhaps the worst time imaginable – between Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2, and sadly, not a lot of marketing and promotions could save it no matter how hard it tried. The game has a quite a large loyal fanbase due to it’s excellent story telling and in particular, its fresh approach to MMO questing with investigation missions, requiring players to solve puzzles, use an in-game browser to research and even deciphering Morse code – at the time, that was unheard of in MMOs.

But ultimately, the game never got it’s population very high and had to drop it’s subscription status for a buy to play model. Today, The Secret World is relaunching as Secret World Legends and will be completely free to play. We can only hope that the relaunch will bring a much needed wave of new players to the game, because this is one underrated MMORPG that deserves its second chance. The relaunch has fixed old issues with the game, such as overhauling the combat system and much more.

#2 Wildstar

At number two, is Wildstar. I think anyone can make a few cases for Wildstar – is it the most overhypped MMORPG in recent times or the most underrated? For it to be on this list, you pretty much know the answer. So let’s examine why.

Carbine Studios, made up of former WoW devs, created Wildstar, a sci-fi fantasy MMORPG that was apparently, going to challenge the big guns. It had an attitude, and it reverberated throughout every piece of news article and video content the game published prior to release. It was really confident – perhaps to confident – and even launched as a subscription only MMORPG, which fewer and fewer games do these days thanks to the dominance of World of Warcraft. Known for it’s incredibly challenging dungeons, interesting PVP telegraphic combat and quirky stories, Wildstar was a hit – for a bout a year before the players begin returning back to whatever MMO they came from.

Wildstar eventually went free to play, and popped up on Steam last year. So what went wrong for this so called WoW killer? Lack of content updates, long running bugs, exploits, botting issues, class balances and so much more – on top of that, add regular staff layoffs and management changes and the result is pretty obvious. It’s a real shame because beneath the surface, Wildstar is actually a really good MMORPG that offers everything a modern MMORPG should offer – and they give it to players for absolutely no charge. It’s a wonder why the game hasn’t attracted a bigger audience since becoming F2P, which is why it will continue to be underrated for some time to come.

#1 TERA

At number one, is TERA. By now, 3 out 5 people watching this would have heard of or played TERA before. The problem is, that even being free to play and out for almost five years now, TERA is still in the wilderness when it comes to picking a list of the top MMORPGs.

At release, TERA was pretty much nailed by majority of critics for being boring and uninspiring with the game’s characters, lore and story. Most will not give a crap about anyone or anything in-game, and the lasting appeal was relatively poor, and most who hit the level cap will never stay around for the grind and move on. Valid reasons, but the one thing everyone universally agreed with at the time was that the combat system was way ahead of any other MMORPG out in the market today – and keep in mind this was before Guild Wars 2 was released.

Today, TERA’s combat still holds up and it’s that action packed flexibility that makes it incredibly fun – it’s even coming to consoles. The sad part is, the game has improved over the years since release, but due to the very early criticisms, that side of the game was never reported on as much which is why TERA continues to be left out of the MMORPG conversation these days. Had it been released way back in 2004 before World of Warcraft, than I’ll have to agree with IGN saying that it could have been the poster child for how MMO combat could have been defined. It’s still going though, and is undoubtedly one of the most underrated MMORPGs in the modern era. You can get started on TERA right now for absolutely free. Check it out!

A lot of us felt the pain and loss when the plug was was pulled on City of Heroes. It was the one superhero MMORPG that allowed players to live their comic book dreams. Create a hero, pick your superpowers and save the world. What else could you ask for?

Well, enter DC Universe Online. The game offered superhero fans a non-sandbox alternative to City of Heroes, and for the past 6 years it has thrived. Not only did it bring back the superhero alter-ego, it introduced linear questing and customization. The latter could possibly be one of the most in-depth cosmetic systems ever seen in the genre at the time. Now that DCUO has had over six years to cook, how does this MMORPG fare today? Is it worth playing? Here are some reasons why it will still kick butt.

It Has Fun Combat System

Undoubtedly, one of the best features of DC Universe Online is its combat system. A decent tutorial system is in place to show you the ropes. Once out into the world, in no time you’ll be experiencing just how smooth combat is. While it maintains the classic MMORPG skill bar, the execution is fast and fluid. It’s action-based, and feels good on controllers too.

Another reason for the impressive combat system is the amount of skills that one player character can obtain. While leveling, players will accrue skill points which can be spent in skill trees to unlock a variety of new skills to suit your play styles. Needless to say, DC Universe definitely put a lot focus on making its combat the best it can be for a free to play MMORPG, and it shows.

The Authentic DC Universe Experience

There’s always a worry when it comes to officially licensed IPs being made into games. We know how bad some of them turn out. Not in this case however. DCUO is an honest attempt to bring the superheroes from DC to life in a presentable way. Why it works is because you’re not just playing as Superman or Batman. You are your own creation, working for these DC Legends. The story weaves in the cavalry only when it makes sense to progress the plot.

Iconic locations in the DC world will also make appearances. Places such as the streets of Gotham City or Metropolis comes to life in a virtual way that players will enjoy. It’s a joy to see these places in game and you can’t help but feel the authenticity ooze. The developers care about being loyal to the comics and that’s a good sign.

The Multi Platform Factor

For non PC players, DC Universe Online is also available to play for free on the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. To-date, there are only a handful of MMORPGs that offers multi-platfom play, and to their credit, DC Universe Online offers a solid alternative to experience the game on consoles.

The Playstation 3 version is unfortunately clunky and graphically dated, but the Playstation 4 version is much improved, with crisp graphics and an all round smooth experience that rivals the PC version. While many will applaud the vision to spread the game’s reach on to consoles, the move is somewhat hurting the PC population, as more and more players move to the console version.

The Final Verdict

Overall, DC Universe Online is a great free to play superhero MMORPG. The game has a great combat system and considering you do that 90% of the time, that’s important. Combined with a decent main story and tons of quests and group content, there’s something for everyone to like.

If you have moved on or never tried DCUO before, I highly suggest giving it a shot especially if you need a superhero fix.

Background story (Does it all piece together and where do you come in?)

With action-packed movies of Superman and Batman being released. In 2010, an online cinematic trailer was released for DC Universe Online in Comic Con. The trailer had featured many heroes and villains with a dark background setting similar to the recent movie adaptations.

None the less, it was I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.LE. The “hype was real” , “It is lit, fam”, and other quotes just flooded the internet. Yes, even I was part of it, I shamelessly admit it.

The trailer themed a post-apocalyptic age where heroes battle villains to the death. We see Wonder Woman perished in the hands of Lex Luthor, Superman; with his heat vision burning the face off Shazam, and the Joker prancing about the battlefield like a child (as we all know he is). However, during the last stand between Superman and Lex Luthor, the latter had won by stabbing a kryptonite spear into his heart. We figured that’s where the story ends, and suddenly out of nowhere, the ultimate villain of all time and the nemesis of Earth itself; Brainiac appeared. That scene really gave the story a kick in the nuts as everyone were on their heels, focusing on what was happening. Although there was no scene about Lex Luthor surviving through the apocalypse and travelling through time, you can tell by his physique and appearance he had suffered an ordeal.

Your story comes in when Lex released a substance that triggers the superhero capabilities of every human on Earth. His deed had caused certain mayhem, but created a fighting chance for mankind. Pretty darn cool backstory don’t you think?

The video was so successful that it currently holds 6 million views. How about that?

Gameplay and graphics.

Unlike the usual pre-fixed character classes, DC Universe Online went for the idea that players would be able to mix-and-match all the available abilities at the start of the game itself. Needless to say, the developers made a pretty good first impression. Some of the abilities to choose under mobility involves flying or gliding, super-speed or acrobatics. All 3 options were so tempting it took me awhile to decide which. Personally, given the option of being a hero or a villain really gives a different perspective as to how your character progresses and ability to shape your characters the way you want it.

The game encompasses non-targeting combat system with the option of playing on your computer or console.  While it is primarily open world, there are occasions where it is instanced based but not too severe as to disrupt the immersion of the game. Graphically,  the game runs excellently with great details and a lot of flashy movements to give the fantasy. Dodging, timing your skills and strategizing seems to be a major part of the game, which ensures that there is more to combat then slashing and blasting large mobs.

Questing and missions

Frankly putting it, it was utterly dull and disappointing. While the game excels in art style, combat and story, the grind is real. Hours and hours of continuous grinding, battling and collecting. Interacting quests were even much worse. The game had such a lacklustre in their questing system that it just bores many players after a couple days. This game is clearly to comparable to games like Dragon Nest where it just features hack-and-slash, spell blasting and levelling up. There was nothing but destruction and repetitive gameplay.

Sure, travelling to locations by flying and climbing high rise buildings is cool but it is easy to get sick of it after hours of gameplay. Mission rewards and character items did not play much role as the game focuses on skill and upgrading your character alone.

Because the game does not require necessary interaction between other players in the game, there is a sense of lacklustre in the immersion. This prevents players to enjoy the game together and run through quests as a group. As we all know, most superheroes or villains tend to work alone as they want to develop their own superpowers. Of course this ensures that the players are not flustered or angered by the actions of other players, but overtime, the players themselves would miss out on the fun activities and other self-devised events.

Summary

Overall, the game was successful and is still currently highly populated amongst MMO. It is one of a kind as the visual and playable successor to the comics and movies (well some movies) that we all love. If you want to be a superhero and battle your way through evil or you can play as a villain, be all rebellious and bad; check out the game. It is definitely worth the try and experience. https://www.dcuniverseonline.com/home
