Standing Stone Games, the developers of both Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online, has announced that they will be extending the open questing of all of in-game adventures and stories through May 31st, 2020.

The studio opened up 90% of its game’s content to all players for free in March due to everyone staying at home during the the pandemic. It appears that both games have seen a spike in activity and perhaps that has brought in much more revenue, which has inspired SSG to extend the free play period. In LOTRO, players can play through all Quest Pack and Expansion questing content free of charge. In DDO, the offer is the same.

Additionally as a thank you to the game’s VIP subscribers, SSG will be giving gifts to anyone with an active VIP subscription who logs into a game world between May 1st and May 31st, 2020. Gifts are below:

It’s Halloween season, and the time has come to put on your scariest cosmetics and have some fun with other players. This month Daybreak Games is celebrating Halloween in style, and we’ve got a list of awesomely spooky Halloween MMO festivals for you to check out from the studio’s roster.

DC Universe Online: The Witching Hour (Event Dates: Oct. 1 – 31, 2018)

All hell has broken loose in the streets of Gotham City and inside The Midnight Masquerade Nightclub! Players head to the East End safehouse in Gotham City and speak to the Phantom Stranger (Heroes) or The Tap Room in Burnley and speak to Tala (Villains) for information on the chaos. New Halloween themed feats, collections and base items are also available.

Dungeons and Dragons Online: The Night Revels Festival (Event Dates: Oct. 2 – Nov. 4, 2018)

The Night Revels Festival is back in full swing! This year players enter a redesigned Delera’s Graveyard, and battle evil ghosts, skeletons, wraiths, and more. Holiday-themed variations of beloved in-game quests will be unlocked by collecting candies and acquiring keys. Completing these quests also award resources that can be used toward a large number of spooky armors, items and other magical gear.

EverQuest: Nights of the Dead (Event Dates: Oct. 10 – Nov. 6, 2018)

Nights are growing darker, and there’s an unmistakable spine-tingling chill in the air that can only mean one thing – Nights of the Dead has returned to Norrath! Adventurers can unlock Spooky Sally and Haunted Jack costumes, participate in quests, discover themed helmets and more.

EverQuest 2: Nights of the Dead (Event Dates: Oct. 5 – Nov. 1, 2018)

Hijinks and haunts are abound in Norrath, which means that Nights of the Dead is back on the Fallen Gate TLE server. This event features familiar favorite quests, new “Grave Memories” collection, and even new costume illusions, house items, and recipe book for crafters!

Nights of the Dead

H1Z1: Hauntfest (Event Dates: Oct. 23 – Nov. 6, 2018)

H1Z1 on PS4 is bringing a new arcade mode, Hauntfest, as well as seasonal battle pass and crate just in time for Halloween. In Hauntfest players pick up candies around the map, giving their characters increased running speed, but limited vision — a virtual sugar rush! The seasonal battle pass rewards all players with “Treat Crates” for completing daily challenges. Lucky players even have the chance to earn the new crate, Dead Man’s Chest, which includes full pirate garb and gear.

Hauntfest

Lord of the Rings Online: The Harvestmath Festival (Event Dates: Oct. 17 – Nov. 6, 2018)

Middle-earth celebrates fall and spooky-fun times with the Harvestmath Festival. Players take part in games, pick pumpkins, explore the Haunted Barrow, experience a spooky tale, and more. During this event, players can also explore a different Hay Maze every day!

Planet Side 2: Nanite of the Living Dead (Event Dates: Oct. 9 – 31, 2018)

“Rift is still alive? DDO is still kicking?” I cannot recall how many times I’ve come across that question on social media. Once in awhile, I’d browse the official Facebook pages of both Rift and DDO to see what’s new. And somewhere in the comments, there’ll be one or two that pops the same query – is this game still alive?

We’re at the far end of 2017, a time when we’ve seen the rise of superstar MMO games that is breaking records – think PUBG, Overwatch and more. The traditional and conventional MMORPGs are being pushed farther out of the limelight, especially those made before the turn of the decade, including Rift and Dungeons and Dragons Online. It’s bad enough that MMORPGs in general are becoming a niche, and aren’t as popular as they used to be. But now smaller MMOs must fight for their very existence.

The Rift Conundrum

This was not always the case, especially with Trion World’s Rift. Released in 2009, the game was heralded as a one-of-a-kind MMORPG that offered WoW vacationers a great experience. The classes and combat was diverse, the world rich in lore and history, and the content was fun. It was also a subscription only game, and in its first couple of years, the ship was steady. Somewhere along the way, things began to dip. Other games like The Lord of the Rings Online found even greater success by going free to play for a time, and many games followed suit. Unfortunately, so did Rift, and thus begin its downfall.

Content cycles took longer, and microtransactions became a staple. This only drove players away, in addition to major game updates that players felt were uncalled for. For instance, arena PvP used to be a viable way to level a character. You could gain a decent sum of experience by just doing PvP matches, and could for a time, ignore the PvE entirely. Players liked having that option – until it was yanked away. Stuff like that is kinda why Rift is being categorized as one of the forgotten few. It’s lost a lot of players and I doubt they’ll ever get them back.

DDO In Neverwinter’s Shadow

In Dungeons and Dragons Online’s case, they haven’t really done too much wrong to their credit. They’ve largely stuck to their guns, continuing to create content that they feel is appropriate and authentic to the world of DnD. In fact, just this year alone they announced a brand new expansion, which is great. But why isn’t this once critically acclaimed MMORPG not getting as much exposure as it used to? The answer lies in it’s distant relation – the other Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG, Neverwinter.

Cryptic and PWE’s Neverwinter is the sexier of the two, from a neutral’s point of view. It’s got better graphics, a more entertaining combat system, is available on all platforms and it actually has something cool – The Foundry. Player made quests and stories are a big draw, especially for a DnD game. It’s also completely free, with content updates coming faster than in DDO, which is only free up to a certain point, and then you’ll need to spend some money for more content.

So for both games involved, it’s a matter of sticking in the past and in the shadow of newer games that are offering something better than they are. So if they want to get out of the forgotten few MMORPG category, they’ll need to either change it up and follow the times or fall behind even further down the playing order, and eventually, to an unfortunate demise.

New DDO Expansion Mists of Ravenloft Is Available For Preorder

Good news, Dungeons & Dragons Online fans, the Mists of Ravenloft expansion can now be preordered. The expansion goes live on the 5th of December and brings a bunch of new content to the game. This includes the brand new Aasimar race.

In typical Standing Stone Games fashion, there are three preorder packages to choose from. Anyone who plays LOTRO and saw the Mordor expansion packages will be familiar with these. Here’s what the pricing looks like:

  • Standard Edition – $40
  • Collector’s Edition – $80
  • Ultimate Fan Bundle – $130

There’s a bunch of perks, exclusive outfits and other bonuses in the more expansive $130 Ultimate Fan Bundle. However, all of them will include the new Aasimar race. I think SSG learned their lesson from not including the High Elf race in the basic edition. In addition, Mists of Ravenloft brings a dozen new dungeon quests and a new raid. Moreover, players can expect a new wilderness area, two new public areas on top of a new saga.

Therefore, if you’re totally into Dungeons & Dragons Online and want to continue your adventures, this is it. Mists of Ravenloft is probably just what the game needs right now to bring back players or gain new ones. While it’s on the expensive side, just as Mordor was, there’s potential for some serious fun here. Check out the official post here for more info.
