The debate on whether or not new MMORPGs can launch with a subscription model has been on-going since the turn of the decade. All the evidence so far points to the answer being no – it’s going to be hard to justify. Not many games still can charge players a monthly fee and remain stable. World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn are the exception here. The former is a Juggernaut. It’s dominance in the early 2000s has garnered it millions of subscribers a month and they can pretty much do whatever they want. The latter is a monopoly of both IP and company. It knows there is a demand for a Final Fantasy MMO, and it too can charge whatever it want, despite what critics think.

As for newer titles? Not much luck there. Other IPs such as Elder Scrolls Online, Wildstar and Star Wars have tried and failed. A combination of launch issues, lackluster gameplay and other player feedback is no doubt the cause, but the bigger question remains. Can newly launched MMORPGs justify a subscription model? Here are a couple of discussion points.

Can It Deliver Timely And Quality Content?

When players pay a monthly fee in 2022, the consumer privilege takes over. That means players expect better customer service, better maintenance and better content that comes at a steady pace. Free to play MMORPGs always struggle to juggle content. It can be a mixed bag, and major expansions take a long time to make due to the lack of funds off the bat. Additionally, players have to deal with shady monetization practices in the form of Pay To Win lootboxes and more that generally, they have no problems avoiding with a subscription fee.

If newer MMORPG games use a subscription model, the studio have to absolutely ensure that they cover all bases. Content and the quality of said content will be incredibly vital to its success. Game play will also have to be stellar, or players will just move on to the next or return to whatever game they came from. The first month after launch is always the best barometer to gauge how successful your launch is. Adding new content ASAP is a good strategy, and to do that quickly, you need that funding injection that can only come from subscribers who pay that monthly fee.

Does It Have An X-Factor?

Content aside, the other factor is the X Factor. What’s so special about your MMO that you think it deserves a monthly sub? WoW can justify this by being a sort of pioneer of the Theme Park in an age where competitors were way behind. They perfected the quest-hub crawl, narrative driven dungeons and more. Final Fantasy can claim that “if you want an MMO, you gotta pay or else you won’t get to experience a FF MMORPG anywhere else”. The story-telling content is also incredibly authentic to what you find in single player Final Fantasy games. Both are justified. Therefore anything newer will have to have a surreal amount of hype and wanting.

The middle ground is of course, going with the buy to play model that has worked for several games like Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2 and Black Desert Online. While a subscription fee is optional (ESO, BDO), these games generally do decent in terms of player numbers and content releases.

Final Thoughts

In short, there’s nothing wrong about launching an MMORPG with a subscription model, under one caveat. You have to absolutely earn it in your first month as an MMORPG. Can you deliver what you promise, and pump out quality content quickly to retain your playerbase? If games think they can, then there should be no reason why it can’t join the likes of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV in charging that sweet monthly fee.

The Elder Scrolls Online’s Ascending Tide DLC, which contains two brand new dungeons, arrives on March 14th for PC, and there’s a bunch of things that ESO players can do to prepare for it!

Join a PVE Guild If You Haven’t Already to run Dungeons

Ascending Tide introduces two new dungeons for four-player groups, Coral Aerie and Shipwright’s Regret, and while both are packed full of new and unique rewards, they’re also very challenging PvE experiences. One good way to ensure you always have the right team for the job is to join a PvE-focused Guild.

Follow these steps below to find the Guild that is right for you:

  1. Navigate to your “Social” menu.
  2. Navigate to “Guilds” and choose the “Guild Finder” option.
  3. Select “Browse Guilds” and highlight “Group PvE” on the drop-down menu.
  4. Apply for any Guilds that appear on the “Results” tab that pique your interest.
    • You may need to provide some basic information about your character.
  5. Wait to be formally accepted.

After admission, you’ll have access to all the benefits that accompany being a Guild member, including Guild Traders, Guild Banks, easier access to organized play, as well as advice and assistance from veteran players.

Upgrade Your Gear

Even with the right group, the forces you will encounter within the Ascending Tide’s dungeons won’t be easy to overcome, and you’ll need to be well equipped to survive. There’s hundreds of item sets and consumables that can help, but if you’re unsure, here’s some of our favorite base-game items to get you started.

  • Spriggan’s Thorns overland set (for Stamina-based builds)
    • Dropped in the Bangkorai zone.
  • Plague Doctor zone set (for tanking builds)
    • Dropped in the Deshaan zone.
  • Necropotence zone set (for Magicka-based builds)
    • Dropped in the Rivenspire zone.
  • Seducers crafted set (for healing builds)
    • Crafted in the Temple of the Eight in Grahtwood, Fisherman’s Island in Stormhaven, and Berezan’s Mine in Deshaan.
  • Dubious Camoran Throne Stamina consumable
    • This recipe can usually be looted during the Jester’s Festival in-game event, but you can often find it available (both the recipe and consumables) for purchase from Guild Traders, too.
  • Witchmother’s Potent Brew Magicka consumable
    • This recipe can usually be looted during the Witches Festival in-game event, but you can often find it available (both the recipe and consumables) for purchase from Guild Traders, too.

Get a Headstart with the Patch Notes

You can get the inside scoop on everything coming with the Ascending Tide DLC and Update 33 base-game patch by reading the Public Test Server patch notes on the official forums. There, you can get all the details on the new dungeons, balance changes, base-game additions, item sets, rewards, achievements, and more.

When Ascending Tide launches, the official patch notes will be available for all to read in the Patch Notes section of the official forums.

Practice on the PTS

Before the DLC even hits live servers, you can preview all the upcoming content, including the new dungeons, by hopping onto the Public Test Servers on PC/Mac.

If you’d like to access the PTS, follow the steps below:

  1. Boot up the PC/Mac ESO launcher.
  2. Toggle the “Show Public Test Environment” option underneath the “Games” menu.
  3. Wait for the testing environment to download.
  4. Select the play option and voilà—you now have access to Update 33 and the Ascending Tide!

We suggest taking this opportunity to get in a couple of practice runs on the upcoming dungeons prior to launch. That way, running them will be a cinch for you once they hit live!

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday is now over, some of the MMORPG sales currently going on is not, and there’s still a day or two left to pick up some new and old titles and a discounted price. To help you get to the good stuff, here’s 5 suggestions below.

New World

Let’s start with a couple of new releases on Steam that are already on sale, although not by very much. First up is Amazon’s New World MMO, which was released only a couple of months back. Both the standard and deluxe editions are 25% off on Steam until December 2nd. New World is not everyone, but folks who like a gritty open world MMO, with action combat and socially-driven PvE and PvP gameplay, just might like this. I’m still playing it, have been since launch, and some weeks I love it for all the group action in expeditions or large wars that I get, but other weeks I just don’t bother when there’s blatant exploits and bugs that just ruins the fun for everyone, especially when certain aspects of gameplay like settlement ownership for your faction is at stake. At that sale price, you could wait a little longer for it to drop in the future, since the game is still very new and the developers are still fixing things albeit slowly. It’s already gotten its first major update, but there are core issues that still exist.

Book of Travels

Another new title is an indie, Kickstarter success story, and that’s Book of Travels. This is according to its description, a TMO, or tiny multiplayer online, where other players are few in your gameplay, but your paths will cross. It’s currently 10% off on Steam, until December 2nd, and I gotta admit, I’ll be picking this one up shortly. The game’s unique hand-drawn art style is gorgeous to look at, and I’m curious about its world, its emphasis on roleplay, and the reviews so far paint a promising picture. Players new to the genre might wanna check out the more traditional style of MMOs before diving into a niche like this.

Elder Scrolls Online

Next is The Elder Scrolls Online. The standard edition with the Morrowind chapter aka expansion bundled in is currently 70% off on Steam until December 2nd. It’s silly to not recommend this at that price, because what the base game offers alone in content is pretty generous. You’ve got hours of fully voiced PvE quests, there’s two PvP game modes, group content, and so much more in ESO, you won’t even need to worry about the optional sub or all the DLCs yet. If you can stomach its polarizing combat system and style, then you’ve got a real gem here. ESO is probably my top pick for current best buy to play MMO.

Black Desert Online

And then there’s Black Desert Online, the quintessential Korean MMORPG experience. It is the most popular south Korean MMORPG on the market despite its age, because it ticks all the boxes for players who like great visuals, customization, flashy action combat, open world pvp, sandbox life skills, and the game is far from done when it comes to updates and new content. It’s a buy to play game, and it’s currently 90% off on Steam until the 2nd. That’s like two bucks for me, so yeah pretty cheap if you haven’t checked out BDO yet.

Guild Wars 2

There’s also ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2, which is free to play but the expansions aren’t, and that’s what’s currently on sale if you’re in NA, SA or EU. From now until the end of the year, you can grab the game’s 2nd expansion, Path of Fire on Amazon or other participating retailers, for 50% off, and it does come bundled in with the game’s 1st expansion, Heart of Thorns. That means, after you hit the free to play content cap which is the end of the vanilla story at level 80, you’ll have more maps, stories, raids and class specializations to play with, until of course, the new End of Dragons expansion comes out next year.

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently on sale and a whole new wave of adventurers will soon be stepping into the online world of Tamriel. Are you one of them? If you’d like to enhance your game with the help of addons, we’re highlighting 5 must-have addons for ESO that will make your time in-game smoother.

5. SkyShards (Updated)

First up and one of the best ESO addons out there is SkyShards. Sky Shards are a core necessity in ESO, as finding three will grant players a skill point. As there a hundreds littered all around the place on all the maps, sometimes finding them can be a pain. The cool thing about ESO is, if you’d rather explore and find them yourself, go right ahead. For players that don’t have the time to play as much, the SkyShards addon is a great help. It automatically pins the location of all available Sky Shards on the maps, making them easier to locate and get to. It also removes the pins for those that you have already collected.

4. HarvestMap (Updated)

To follow up on SkyShard’s usefulness, HarvestMap or EsoheadMarkers are the next best thing. This addon displays resource nodes, chests and fishing spots on the map, compass and 3D world. It registers a new icon whenever you pick up a resources, so you and your alts will always know where to find the node. This is super handy if you’re leveling up a crafter and want to farm mats out in the world yourself. Do keep in mind that the more icons are on the map, the more resources the addon draws from your PC.

3. SurpressErrorMessage

One of the most annoying things that can happen to you is logging into ESO after a brand new DLC hits, and getting bombarded with tons of addon error messages. Why does this happen? The error popups occur because a new major patch simply adds new code that breaks addons that are not updated. If you still want to play the game with the current outdated addons while waiting for these authors to update them, you need this addon. It suppresses the error messages like magic.

1. Votan’s MiniMap (Updated)

And finally, we arrive to Votan’s MiniMap, an addon that once you start using, you cannot live without. Again, with Elder Scrolls Online, by default there is no mini-map. Elder Scrolls Games have always relied on the compass, but in the MMORPG world, not having a mini map can feel strange. Thankfully, this addon creates a mini map for players to drag and resize on their UI. The best part is it also works with SkyShard and HarvestMap addons, ensuring that those icons show up on the mini map too.
