Splitgate developer and publisher 1047 Games pushed a significant update live today for the free online shooter that sports several quality of life enhancements and fixes for players.

The biggest change with this update addresses the game’s mantling system. Players are now able to climb ledges with far more freedom, allowing more strategic verticality in combat. Additionally, Nvidia Reflex has been implemented into the game with this update – PC players using Nvidia GPUs will shave precious milliseconds off reaction times, potentially skirting death when it matters most. Nvidia Reflex is not available on consoles.

Fans will also be happy to hear that much needed voice chat improvements have been implemented as voice chat should no longer drop out across platforms during a match.

New featured playlists have been added that will rotate each weekend with different modes, allowing fans a greater chance to test out a variety of modes and hone their skills across various play styles and strategies. Another key update is that the geometry bug causing crashing on Karman Station’s map and keeping it out of rotation has now also been addressed and the fix has been added to the game. Several other optimizations have also been added, and the full list can be found at https://www.splitgate.com/for-new-site/featured-news.

One of the defining games of summer 2021, Splitgate exploded onto PCs and consoles as the game hit open beta across all platforms in July. With more than 13 million downloads, the unique portal shooter features 20+ available maps, hundreds of exclusive weapon skins, armor skins, banners, jetpacks and more with premium DLCs, a battle pass and more. Fans can jump into the pre-season open beta happening now, completely for free.

Gaijin Entertainment and Darkflow Software announce that the military online action Enlisted has received the major 0.2.0 Content Update that opens the second phase of the game life cycle. The “Battle of Tunisia” campaign is now available to all players, marking the release of all four campaigns originally revealed. “Battle for Moscow”“Battle for Berlin” and “Invasion of Normandy” also see new missions and other content like weapons, soldiers and vehicles. The team is already working on the new campaigns, and the specific battles chosen for them will be announced later. The update also brings new gameplay mechanics, including a new “Destruction” game mode, all of them developed with the help of user feedback.

The “Destruction” mode goal is to get to the enemy’s key objects, set up the explosive device and repel counter-attacks until the target is blown up. Defenders can prevent destruction by killing the attackers and they also have time after the start of the timer to disarm mines in the area. Each soldier on the attacking side has explosives in this mode. The new mechanics include trench digging right in the middle of battle, smoke artillery strikes, moving unlocked weapons between campaigns and issuing individual orders to each soldier in a squad. Motorcycles and boats can be used to move through the battlefield faster.

The battle in the “Omer” mission in Normandy takes place on a map inspired by the city of Saint-Omer in Northern France. While players have already experienced a beach landing and rural areas fights, now they’ll see what city combat looks like with snipers on the roofs and anti-tank squads hiding behind windows. The large canal in the city centre allows faster travel via motor boats. The “Quarry” mission in the Moscow outskirts is another unique battlefield. Bullets and cannon shells bounce off the static bulldozers, cranes and other heavy equipment, while numerous pits and mounds make great cover. Finally, a new “Fortress” mission in Tunisia is a huge military base encircled by walls.

The update brings new progression levels to all Enlisted campaigns. For example, players now have a way to unlock the PIAT grenade launcher, Bren Mk I machine gun, Beretta M38/42 submachine gun, R 75 motorcycle, Panther A medium tank, MiG-3-15 fighter and dozens of other weapons and vehicles. It’s also worth mentioning that all closed beta test content from “Battle of Tunisia” i.e. Carcano M1891 rifles and AB 41 armoured cars  are also now available to everyone.

The full information on this update is available at the official Enlisted website: https://enlisted.net

Cryptic Studios have announced that Neverwinter’s 21st module, Jewel of the North, will receive a free battle pass, Echoes of Prophecy. Starting with the first milestone launching on PC and consoles on October 1, adventurers will experience an evolving campaign across the three milestones which mark the mysterious return of the Cult of the Dragon, an evil organization that venerates dragons. In addition, each milestone features unique content, including new story content, enemies, rewards and more. The second milestone will launch on all platforms on November 1, and the last milestone launches on all platforms on December 1.

In Echoes of Prophecy, rumors of oddities in the Weave have spread from the frozen north of Icewind Dale to the sweltering southeastern Dambrath as the Cult of the Dragon has made a return to the city of Neverwinter. Alongside the legendary Sage of Shadowdale Elminster Aumar and the gathering factions forming the Shield of the North, players investigate this mysterious phenomenon and search for answers in hopes of bringing peace to Faerûn once more.

The epic campaign for Echoes of Prophecy will take place over three unique milestones. With the first milestone launching on PC and consoles on October 1, adventurers start their investigation of the Cult of the Dragon’s return and confront the cult’s powerful priests to stop their plans. The remaining milestones evolve the story of Echoes of Prophecy as players continue to uncover details behind the cult’s return and why there are strange new alterations to the Weave.

Along with new story content and challenging enemies, each milestone will bring limited-time rewards, including new mounts, cosmetic items and emotes. For every milestone, adventurers will automatically unlock free, unique rewards by logging in, playing through the campaign and completing repeatable quests. Additionally, players can purchase the premium battle pass to earn additional rewards.

Neverwinter is a free-to-play action MMORPG featuring fast-paced combat and epic dungeons. Players explore the vast city of Neverwinter and its surrounding lands, learning the vivid history of the iconic city in the Forgotten Realms and battling its many enemies. Neverwinter is available on PC and is free to play digitally on Xbox One (Xbox Live Gold membership not required) and PlayStation®4 (PlayStation®Plus not required).

Splitgate Season 0 is now available after being revealed on Opening Night Live today. The surprise launch of Season 0 comes just weeks after developer and publisher 1047 Games’ flagship title exploded in popularity, garnering more than 10 million downloads in its first month of open beta. The Season 0 content debuts a Battle Pass with 100 levels, new seasonal challenges and seasonal rewards, a new map, new modes, and more.

One of the defining games of summer 2021, Splitgate’s Season 0 swings into action today with all-new challenges that unlock throughout the season allowing fans to gain rewards. Season 0 features both free and premium challenges, with premium challenges available exclusively to Battle Pass owners. These will be more difficult to complete than the weekly and daily challenges, but will pack bigger rewards for the most dedicated players.

Also live today: Contamination Mode. In Contamination Mode, the contaminated player equips only a melee weapon and contaminates as many other players as possible by killing them, ending the round when all other players become infected. Players who become contaminated then spawn and switch sides, garnering points for contaminating as many players as they can. Uninfected players equip a shotgun and earn points by killing as many contaminated players as they can, so there’s multiple ways to rack up points in this action-packed thrilling mode. This mode is…infectious.

Season 0 also features the latest map, Karman Station, to launch among Splitgate’s 20+ available maps, transporting players to a stunning and dangerous open galactic playground set in outer space. With a sprawling and exposed center, the map also features an outer sniper tower which serves the controlling team by helping to track enemy movements. But be careful, teamwork is necessary to overtake objectives in adjacent corridors and rooms.

Players jumping into Season 0 have the option to choose from hundreds of exclusive weapon skins, armor skins, banners, jetpacks and more, alongside new premium DLCs including a new starter character and weapon pack, or choose the Gold Edition with the most intimidating character in the Splitgate universe, an exclusive legendary portal and jetpack, and more.

Splitgate is an online multiplayer first-person shooter that features player-created portals. Initially launched for PC in 2019, the flagship title from 1047 Games was re-released for PlayStation and Xbox consoles in the spring and has experienced a meteoric rise in player adoption to become one of 2021’s most unstoppable games.

Today, Perfect World Entertainment Inc., a leading publisher of free-to-play MMORPGs, and Cryptic Studios announced the Lost City of Omu update is now available for Neverwinter PC, following on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 at a later date. The latest expansion to the free-to-play MMORPG set in the Forgotten Realms takes players deeper into the jungles of Chult where they must face Acererak, the powerful lich responsible for the death curse threatening the land. This update brings Omu to life with a new adventure zone, Monster Hunts, Heroic Encounters, an Endgame Trial, smoothed level 60-70 progression, an expanded Tomb of AnnihilationCampaign and more.

Watch Neverwinter: Lost City of Omu‘s Official Launch Trailer

The long-forgotten city of Omu hides the secret to fully exploring the Tomb of Annihilation’s depths – where lies the last chance to overcome Acererak’s death curse. Neverwinter’s latest adventure zone sends players into the decaying ruins of the city, through a maze of subterranean tunnels and into a foreboding yuan-ti temple, bringing new quests and challenges. Monster Hunts from the Tomb of Annihilation module return with greater threats and more valuable rewards. Explorers of the lost city will also seek out Treasure Maps, tackle Repeatable Adventures as well as new Heroic Encounters – one of which features the Tyrant, an undead, zombie-spewing T-Rex. Continuing their campaign against the evil lich, players must learn the secrets of Omu’s Trickster Gods to access the Tomb in its entirety and finally face Acererak’s wrath. Features of this expansion include:

  • Temple Ruins Adventure Zone – With the discovery of the lost city of Omu, adventurers travel deeper into Chult’s jungles than before, exploring crumbling temple ruins, a labyrinth of underground tunnels and a new instance focused on the yuan-ti, “Fane of the Night Serpent.”
  • New Monster Hunts & Heroic Encounters – Adventurers can party up to tackle encounters around Omu or become monster hunters. All new contracts and encounters will pit players against Chult’s scariest predators including the dreaded Tyrant T-Rex for improved rewards. Just mind the undead spawning from its mouth!
  • Expanded Tomb of Annihilation Campaign – In the epic conclusion of the Chult narrative, players dive deeper into the Campaign with new tasks, new Jungles of Chult boon ranks and a new 10-player Endgame Trial where they will finally face Acererak and his abomination, the Atropal.
  • Smoother Progression from Level 60 to 70 – Neverwinter players who haven’t quite reached the level cap will now experience a smoother progression due to a drastic balancing of the XP curve, allowing them to access the game’s many endgame Campaigns sooner – including the Lost City of Omu.
  • Class Power Adjustments – Many powers previously based on weapon damage have been changed to scale based on player stats, and bug fixes have been applied to class powers previously behaving incorrectly. Scourge Warlocks can now explore a more viable Temptation feat tree, for example.
  • Additional Features – New recipes for Masterwork Professions, Treasure Maps, Repeatable Adventures and quality of life improvements.

Lets start the week with a controversial opinion piece about free to play MMORPGs. Which of the lot has the most restrictive F2P system? When the free model became popular in the industry, many sung its praises, claiming that this model is the way forward. Today, plenty of MMOs including AAA titles use this model. But we have come to learn then as long as the F2P tag exists on an MMO, there is always a catch.

Myself, the MMOsWorld team and I’m very sure our readers have all played a bunch of F2P titles. In fact some of us still do on a weekly basis. But what form of restrictions takes the cake when it comes to choking free players from truly experiencing the game? Which MMORPG we’ve tried to play but it left us feeling so frustrated that we rage quit? Start leaving your comments in the comment section below!

The Most Restrictive F2P MMO: Star Wars the Old Republic

Anyone else jumped in joy the moment you heard that SWTOR was going free to play? Not only could you take up the roles of Jedi and Sith in the SW universe without paying, we could also enjoy the masterfully crafted Bioware class stories. The gameplay was solid, offering hours of questing fun in the various planets that are staples in the Star Wars universe. The game is filled with complex characters and companions that lends credence to the storytelling. It was an amazing experience as a subscriber.

And that’s where the plaudits stop. Because as a free to play player, SWTOR’s restrictions severely punishes you for not considering throwing them money on a monthly basis. Let’s start with the worst offender. Want an extra UI element, lets say, adding another hotbar for skills? Pay. How about turning on titles or hiding your helmet cosmetics? Pay. Want to use end-game gear, hold more Credits or use your Cargo Hold? Guess what, pay. This is just the tip of the ice berg, and there’s many more restrictions that just turns away new players from that MMO experience. I have personally played as both sides, subscriber and F2P. I have never seen an MMO rub it in player’s faces as much as SWTOR has, and they don’t even care all these years later. This MMO definitely takes the cake as the most restrictive F2P model ever in an MMORPG.

Comparing Business Models

A lot of players will also argue that high praise games like Guild Wars 2 – which has now made the core game free – is no different. Guild Wars 2’s base game is fully accessible, allowing new players to experience world events, dungeons and all stories up to the expansion. Heart of Thorns requires a purchase, and once owned, all restrictions are lifted. The base GW2 does have limitations for new players, that much is true. You can’t access mails and Trading Posts for example, but you also can’t compare that to a true free to play game like Star Wars the old Republic. Guild Wars 2 started and still is using a different business model, the buy to play system. One purchase is all you need to get rid of the restrictions, and even then, those aren’t restrictions that’ll make you pull your hair out. Thus, that argument is moot.

Other MMOs that are closer to SWTOR like The Lord of the Rings Online or Archeage would be a better fit. The former could be called the pioneer of F2P at the turn of the decade, dropping the subscription only based model for free to play. While it may not dime and nickel as much as SWTOR, there are a quite a few restrictions too. There’s a gold cap, Auction House posting limit and content that’s locked behind a pay wall. Ultimately, it’s how much restriction and the level of severity that we’re here to judge.

The verdict now lies on you, readers. What in your opinion is the most restrictive free to play MMO you’ve played? Let us know!
