Today, Perfect World Entertainment, a leading publisher of online games, and Cryptic Studios announced Magic: Legends has entered Open Beta on Arc Games and the Epic Games Store. For the first time ever, millions of players from around the world will be able to experience the free-to-play, persistent-world, action RPG set in the iconic Multiverse of Magic: The Gathering. Those who join the game’s Open Beta will assume the role of a powerful, spell-wielding Planeswalker and travel across five diverse regions while collecting more than 175 powerful mana-based spells and 170 pieces of Equipment inspired by the original strategy game. Magic: Legends will launch on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation®4 later this year.

Magic: Legends Open Beta Overview

Magic: Legends allows longtime fans of Magic: The Gathering to explore the Multiverse like never before. After selecting from one of five Planeswalker starter classes, players will travel to different regions made famous by the celebrated card game, including Innistrad, Tazeem, Benalia and more. While exploring these planes, players will collect Artifacts, Equipment and mana-based spells, which will be used to help them build a deck of powerful, randomized attacks. A full list of the game’s key features includes:

  • A New ‘Magic’ Story – Ancient forces move in the darkness, and it’s up to players to gather the power needed to fight this evil. Magic: Legends features noteworthy characters from the iconic franchise across various storylines, eventually culminating in conflict with a powerful villain from the Multiverse.

  • Become a Planeswalker – Magic: Legends allows players to harness the power of mana through five diverse starter classes and switch between these classes on the fly – with additional classes available later on.

  • Walk Your Own Path – Planeswalkers will need to cross various planes to save the Magic Multiverse, but how they weave their path is up to them.

  • Control the Chaos –  Players will make fast, tactical decisions on the battlefield in real-time, while strategically building a deck of spells from the spell library, which will be drawn at random during combat. Whether they wield the power of White, Blue, Black, Red, or Green mana – their choices determine how they navigate the battlefield.

  • Collect and Upgrade – Magic: Legends offers a myriad of spells and spell pages that can be collected to make each spell more powerful. Players will acquire and utilize Equipment and Artifacts to synergize with their decks in order to craft their desired playstyles.

  • Fight Together  The planes in Magic: Legends can be traversed alone or with up to two other Planeswalkers. Players can prepare unique loadouts to build on their teammates’ strengths or test their mettle in 1v1 PvP Duels.

Magic: Legends Classes

Open Beta for Magic: Legends introduces five unique starter classes of Planeswalkers, with additional classes available later on:

  • The Geomancer draws upon the power of the Earth to pummel enemies in close quarters with devastating stone and lava attacks. They are capable of absorbing blows that would otherwise incapacitate other Planeswalkers with their rock shield. Geomancers prefer to call upon creatures like goblins, kavu and earth elementals.

  • The Mind Mage personifies cool intellect. As a Planeswalker that focuses on psychic powers, they can battle enemies from a safe distance, controlling projectiles with telekinetic powers, and lock down dangerous foes with spells that put them to sleep or turn them against their allies.

  • The Beastcaller is the embodiment of primal might and savagery. They can vanquish hordes of foes on the battlefield with crushing blows from a massive spirit axe while coordinating attacks with an Aether Fox companion and other summoned beasts.

  • The Sanctifier is equally adept at smiting foes with searing bolts of light as they are with mending the wounds of fallen comrades. This class can summon forth angels, paladins and those dedicated to order for protection in battle while laying waste to enemies with righteous light.

  • The Necromancer uses deathly rituals to devastate enemies and raise undead hordes for their own purposes. This class utilizes its unique connection with death to tear the life from the living and sap enemies’ strength with terrible curses.

Magic: Legends Regions

n addition, players will explore five diverse regions across four planes, lifted directly from the Magic: The Gathering card sets:

  • Shiv – A volcanic island on the plane of Dominaria – inhabited by Ghitu tribes, goblins, ogres, and dragons.

  • Benalia – A church-state city on the plane of Dominaria, where rolling plains meet dark swamps. The Benalish people are at war with the Cabal fanatics and their demons.

  • Tazeem – The jungle continent on the plane of Zendikar, featuring mystical Hedron stones, massive trees, and lush rivers – inhabited by merfolk, elves, and a host of wild creatures.

  • Tolaria – A tropical academy on the plane of Dominaria – teeming with aspiring wizards, Homarid beasts, and artifact constructs.

  • Gavony – A province on the plane of Innistrad, where the settlements and townsfolk are constantly under attack by the likes of werewolves and undead.

February has come and gone, and we’re now in March 2021, with the promise of more MMORPG content headed our way. Last month was exciting since we got plenty of good news especially from Final Fantasy XIV (new expansion announced) and World of Warcraft (Chains of Domination). So what does March have in store for MMORPGS?

Elder Scrolls Online: Flames of Ambition DLC

The hugely popular Elder Scrolls Online by Zenimax will kick off its year-long Gates of Oblivion story with the release of the first dungeon DLC of the 2021 titled Flames of Ambition on March 8th 2021. The DLC contains two brand new dungeons, The Cauldron and the Black Drake Villa. Expect to see new Oblivion themed dungeon gear rewards, alongside plenty of new achievements, cosmetics and more. While the DLC isn’t compulsory to enjoy the narrative, it will have quests that ties into the main Chapter that drops later in the year.

Guild Wars 2 Champions Chapter 3: Balance

The road to Guild Wars 2’s Cantha expansion this year has been exciting, as we’ve been getting regular updates to the Living World Story in the form of Champions. The third Chapter, Balance, is set to drop this month according to ArenaNet’s road map, and we’re expecting more Dragon Response Missions, unique Masteries and much more. The next chapter is set for March 2021, but no exact date has yet to be announced.

Blade & Soul Revolution Global

The global version of Blade & Soul Revolution is coming to the App Store and Google Play on March 4th 2021, and will take the mobile MMO scene by storm. Featuring Unreal Engine 4 and new features tailored for mobiles, Revolution is the perfect companion game for those who already play Blade & Soul the MMORPG on the PC.

Magic: Legends Open Beta

On March 23rd, Cryptic’s ARPG Magic: Legends will enter open beta, and we’re excited. This is the first ARPG co-op titled that uses the Magic the Gathering IP, and the gameplay looks very fun for those who enjoy the card game with familiar spells, and more making appearances. While the open beta is free and accessible to everyone interested, the catch is that it will take place exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

Top down isometric MMORPGs have always been popular thanks to classics like Ultima Online or Ragnarok Online, and here’s a list of the top 3 upcoming top down MMORPGs.

1. Corepunk

With an art style that will appease many, its steampunk setting and clever features like a fog of war system, Corepunk is shaping up to be the next big MMORPG to hit the global market. The game let’s players pick Characters as classes, and the gameplay from the trailer previews look solid enough, with a little gore too which not many other MMORPGs out there tolerate. While the beta is apparently happening in 2020, we may have to wait a little longer for the full release.

2. Magic: Legends

Magic The Gathering fans and players are pretty excited about Magic: Legends. Why? It’s an MMO that will have a virtual world brought to life with authentic source material, classes and more that isn’t a card-game. Earlier this year we got the news that it isn’t technically a full scale MMORPG, but rather an Action RPG in the mold of Diablo with less skills and an RNG card type mechanic for battles, but that won’t stop fans of the IP from jumping into a beta later this year.

3. Mad World

Arguably the most unique MMO on the list is an indie title known as Mad World. Aesthetically, it’s a 2.5D world with fun, vibrant and colorful graphics. In Mad World, players are treated to a semi-sandbox MMORPG with both PvE and PvP available. There will also be huge guild battles and a pet taming system to boot, which sounds interesting for a game like this. While it has been silent for over a year, the developers are finally coming out with more information and hopefully we’ll see a release pretty soon.

Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios have officially announced that the Sanctifier will be among the five starting Planeswalker classes available for Magic: Legends players at launch. Inspired by the radiance of the sun itself, Magic: Legends’ modern take on the classic support class embodies the regimented structure, gleaming light, and celestial focus associated with Magic: The Gathering’s white mana.

The Sanctifier is a long range character who is able to heal their allies while smiting their enemies and a devout healer who maintains order on the battlefield by supporting their allies and summoned creatures alike.

This devout spiritual healer can call on the power of Divine Bolt, a primary ability that fires long range bolts of holy energy at enemies from a safe distance. This is complemented by their secondary ability, Wave of Radiance, which generates a brilliant swath of moving light that damages every enemy it touches and can heal the Sanctifier’s allies and summons.

The Sanctifier is an ideal class for players who enjoy maintaining order on the battlefield, demonstrated by their powerful utility ability, Salvation. Every time the Sanctifier uses Salvation they regenerate health, heal their summons, and gain a stack of Devotion. Upon using Salvation four times, Sanctifiers will be joined on the battlefield by an Angel, who will fight alongside them with the iconic Lifelink ability.  Like the card game source material, creatures with Lifelink will heal the player as they deal damage.

For more information on how the Sanctifier personifies Magic: The Gathering’s white mana, check out a new blog post from the development team on the Magic: Legends website.

Upcoming ARPG MMO Magic: Legends, the first Magic the Gathering game of its kind from Cryptic Studios, has revealed more details about its jungle environments in Tazeem, which paints a picture of what players can expect from the location. Learn all about it here.

Tazeem Details

Tazeem is a lush jungle continent located on the plane of Zendikar, and is the third official region that Cryptic has developed for Magic: Legends. Tazeem is covered in dense foliage, the composition of which creates a thick jungle canopy that obscures the ground below. According to the developers, they wanted to give the feeling of your character view being obscured by the dense tree canopies, and that was a challenge they had to overcome.

Gorgeous Vista

One thing Planewalkers can definitely expect is the gorgeous vistas in Tazeem. The team rediscovered the use of negative spaces to show off these vistas, and one can look down at the environments and view the atmospheric fog that thickens or thins based upon the perceived distance of an object.

Lighting The Way

The lighting in Tazeem spans a wider array of colors than Benalia and Shiv. Scenery shifts from sunny days under a humid jungle canopy to dark areas filled with bioluminescent light. In addition to that, Tazeem features aquatic areas that house Zendikar’s Merfolk. In order to bring the continent to life, the dev team needed to embrace the vastly different lighting needs of these areas. That meant they had to assess each area and ensure the shifts in lighting properly guide players along the many defining trails and paths of Tazeem. Extra time was taken to make sure the thickness of the canopy was conveyed by the dappled lighting, which darkens as the canopy grows and players delve deeper. From there, lights emitted from the surrounding area must be sparse enough to preserve the darkness while also giving enough of a visual trail for players to follow.
