DarkBind is an Action MMORPG that features a thrilling combat system set in a dark, magical world. As NetEase Games’ latest venture into the hardcore ACTMMO field, the game has been designed with overseas players in mind when it comes to themes, operations, character development, and PvP activities. The innovative combination of action and multiplayer elements, along with unique themes, high-quality art, and a magnificent mythological worldview, will provide players with a mobile gaming experience like never before. The game is still in development, with the first closed beta test to be rolled out in North America and Japan on April 7.

Customizable Skill Sets

In DarkBind, players will engage in many battles as “The Returned One” to save the world. The game offers players a rich selection of weapon skills, featuring a variety of skill set combos that require different strategies to bring out their unique effects. As players get familiar with these skill sets, they can choose the best strategies for each boss and scenario, making for a fun and challenging game.

Realistic Graphics

DarkBind uses next-generation technology to create an immersive world of dark magic and realistic combat. The game features a simple but intense combat system, with each skill displaying an animation when triggered. Thanks to the enhanced graphics, players can get in the thick of battle to experience their attack effects and how enemies respond, making for more thrilling and realistic fights overall.

Distinct Settings for Every Level

The game features multiple maps with different themes and distinct level settings. From the sands of Demon’s Hill to the eerie Catacombs, the whole world awaits exploration. As the story unfolds, players will encounter a unique array of enemies each level, gaining a better understanding of their nemeses and the world after countless hard-fought battles.

Challenging Bosses

In DarkBind, players will fight bosses that have their own grotesque looks and attack patterns. As they progress in the game, players can analyze bosses’ skills and moves to choose the best strategy to win. Likewise, players can challenge higher difficulties to make new records and climb up in the rankings.

Diverse PvP Modes for Every Type of Player

In addition to the PvE system, DarkBind also offers a variety of PvP modes for players to prove themselves with their preferred weapons and skills. Those who claim to be hardcore players can also compete in PvP modes to see who will really make it out on top.

gamigo and Dynamight Studios are pleased to announce the closed beta for Fractured Online is now available.

The closed beta phase of Fractured Online welcomes players, both new and old, to explore the new continent of Aerhen, where Humans largely preside and unique biomes will push players’ survival instincts to the max. The mountains are cold and unforgiving; the volcanic region is hot and oppressive; sudden torrential downpours plague the steppe biome. The only redeeming quality is the tundra region as it has fewer weather anomalies. Unfortunately, there are plenty of creatures to worry about. Jotunns, Mammoths, Arctic Wolves, and various Elementals are just some of the ferocious fauna players will come across when they visit this new land.

In addition to exploring a new region filled with obstacles to overcome, players will be able to take part in several events across multiple channels – including social media, Discord, and in-game – during their time with the closed beta. More details on these events will be revealed soon.

“Today marks a very important time in Fractured Online’s history,” says Jacopo Gallelli, Co-Founder and CEO at Dynamight Studios. “As of this moment, anyone can jump into the game at any time to begin their quest for knowledge and overcome threats through their own skill and cleverness, not equipment or level. Venture into legendary travels as a solitary hero or start a settlement with your guild and grow into the next empire. Take part in a robust player-driven economy, craft items for personal use or for trade, and fight off various monsters or other players in PvE/PvP combat. What players do in game is completely up to them as they can either live an honest life as a shepherd, farmer, or crafter, or choose a more violent path of hunting and scavenging.”

Players interested in participating in the closed beta of Fractured Online can purchase a discounted copy of the game via the official Glyph store at https://fracturedonline.com/store/#pack. Not only will players gain access to its closed beta, but they’ll also receive unique in-game items, credits and other limited content.

A slew of updates and new content has gone live in Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, including a level cap increase, new Photon Arts for weapons and the introduction of Compound Techniques, new Ranks for Combat Sectors, a new DOLLS-inspired Weapon Series, some long-anticipated quality of life features, and more.

Today’s update will raise the level cap to 45. ARKS instructors have been hard at work refining new Photon Arts for all weapons and creating Compound Techniques for those capable of directly wielding Photons. One Photon Art will be added to most weapons, excluding rods, tails and wands. Rods, tails, and wands will be receiving three new types of Compound Techniques, which are powerful Class Skills activated by consuming a special power gauge.

There will be many updates in the newest region, Retem. New High Ranked Sectors will be added to the Retem Alnothe Combat Sector. Players can take advantage of this new development by farming PSE Bursts in the new Rank 3 Combat Sectors. Two new Retem Urgent Quests debut in Retem’s High-Rank Sectors; enemies increase the attack and defense of other enemies around them but defeating them will reward players with a large amount of Meseta and an occasional Arms Refiner drop. Gigantix will be raised to level 49 and DOLLS in Aelio and Retem will now drop DOLLS-themed Kukuhroziat weapons. The Kukuhroziat Series were inspired by the look of DOLLS and have a unique Weapon Potential that’ll come in handy for future game content.

The new Party Recruitment system makes it easier than ever to find new players to play with. Recruit players from the same Room by using the Communications menu to set the purpose of your party and requirements to join. Others will be able to identify that you’re recruiting by the special icon that appears above your character and then they can select the appropriate option from Nearby Characters in the Communications Menu.

Dedicated photo rooms will now let players take photos without enemies and change the weather! Playlist function is being added to the mag jukebox so players can play their favorite in-game songs one after the other automatically. Streamer Mode will help Streamers show off their gameplay, while disabling Chat during screensharing. Players can keep up to date with specific rare drops through custom notifications.

Developer Twin Drums recently entered the closed alpha test phase for its Afro-Fantasy, Role Playing focused MMORPG, The Wagadu Chronicles.

Inspired by the popularity explosion in tabletop gaming – and further validated by the difficulties faced trying to bring together a party during the pandemic – The Wagadu Chronicles presets a strictly “role-play first” focus to create a welcoming space for role-players and those who are learning role-play by way of proactive, thought-through moderation.

The Wagadu Chronicles – the Role-Play-first Afrofantasy MMORPG brings back the “role-play” to the genre. A magnificent African-inspired RPG where NPC’s are actually other players, The Wagadu Chronicles invites players to immerse themselves in a unique fantasy setting where every character from sorcerer to sailor is invested in their character and acts accordingly to the lore of their people and craft. Explore and participate in an ever-changing world, where land and status will evolve and change over time. Adapt and develop alongside the world and its inhabitants in an MMORPG experience with uniquely developed skill trees, village management and craft systems built to create rich characters full of memories and quirks which can impact the world and ecosystem in little and large ways.

With its roots in the mythology, peoples and geology of the African continent, drawing references from many African nations including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Mali, Congo and Kenya the game sets out to not only create a safe-space away from the aggressive, combat focus of many player driven MMORPG worlds but also to address an imbalance the developers saw in a genre over-saturated with Euro and Asian-centric fantasy.

We wish there wasn’t something special about the Wagadu Chronicles, but unfortunately in this world there is” commented Allan Cudicio, founder of Twin Drums and the game’s Lead Designer. “Wagadu’s fantasy world is influenced by African pre-colonial cultures. It’s definitely a pan-African game, with a strong focus on sub-saharan Africa and significant influences from diasporas. Our thought process was similar to Tolkien when he created Middle Earth: we delved deep into many, many cultures around the continent and blended it with fairy-tale & fantasy elements. This enabled us to create a world that we see as truly unique in games today.”

Diversity and moving away from the ethnonationalism typical to many MMORPG titles is key to the philosophy behind The Wagadu Chronicles – a player’s culture and, to a degree, their role-play priorities aren’t tied to their physical appearance. A horned “Swala” woman, rather than belonging to a stereotypical Herder culture, might belong to a death-worshiping Lunar culture – the only way to know is to role-play and ask! Players can freely match any lineage with any culture, coming up with a vast array of interesting role-playing combinations.

This high degree of customisation in The Wagadu Chronicles also gives the freedom for characters to not be strictly divided in classes but rather created from a variety of skills that can be leveled up individually. Do you want to be a swashbuckling fisher or a wizard-smith-farmer? You got it!

The Wagadu Chronicles was successfully funded on Kickstarter back in 2019 as well as attracting attention, and investment, from Riot Games as part of their Underrepresented Founders Program.

The debate on whether or not new MMORPGs can launch with a subscription model has been on-going since the turn of the decade. All the evidence so far points to the answer being no – it’s going to be hard to justify. Not many games still can charge players a monthly fee and remain stable. World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn are the exception here. The former is a Juggernaut. It’s dominance in the early 2000s has garnered it millions of subscribers a month and they can pretty much do whatever they want. The latter is a monopoly of both IP and company. It knows there is a demand for a Final Fantasy MMO, and it too can charge whatever it want, despite what critics think.

As for newer titles? Not much luck there. Other IPs such as Elder Scrolls Online, Wildstar and Star Wars have tried and failed. A combination of launch issues, lackluster gameplay and other player feedback is no doubt the cause, but the bigger question remains. Can newly launched MMORPGs justify a subscription model? Here are a couple of discussion points.

Can It Deliver Timely And Quality Content?

When players pay a monthly fee in 2022, the consumer privilege takes over. That means players expect better customer service, better maintenance and better content that comes at a steady pace. Free to play MMORPGs always struggle to juggle content. It can be a mixed bag, and major expansions take a long time to make due to the lack of funds off the bat. Additionally, players have to deal with shady monetization practices in the form of Pay To Win lootboxes and more that generally, they have no problems avoiding with a subscription fee.

If newer MMORPG games use a subscription model, the studio have to absolutely ensure that they cover all bases. Content and the quality of said content will be incredibly vital to its success. Game play will also have to be stellar, or players will just move on to the next or return to whatever game they came from. The first month after launch is always the best barometer to gauge how successful your launch is. Adding new content ASAP is a good strategy, and to do that quickly, you need that funding injection that can only come from subscribers who pay that monthly fee.

Does It Have An X-Factor?

Content aside, the other factor is the X Factor. What’s so special about your MMO that you think it deserves a monthly sub? WoW can justify this by being a sort of pioneer of the Theme Park in an age where competitors were way behind. They perfected the quest-hub crawl, narrative driven dungeons and more. Final Fantasy can claim that “if you want an MMO, you gotta pay or else you won’t get to experience a FF MMORPG anywhere else”. The story-telling content is also incredibly authentic to what you find in single player Final Fantasy games. Both are justified. Therefore anything newer will have to have a surreal amount of hype and wanting.

The middle ground is of course, going with the buy to play model that has worked for several games like Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2 and Black Desert Online. While a subscription fee is optional (ESO, BDO), these games generally do decent in terms of player numbers and content releases.

Final Thoughts

In short, there’s nothing wrong about launching an MMORPG with a subscription model, under one caveat. You have to absolutely earn it in your first month as an MMORPG. Can you deliver what you promise, and pump out quality content quickly to retain your playerbase? If games think they can, then there should be no reason why it can’t join the likes of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV in charging that sweet monthly fee.

After a year-long battle, the epic finale to RuneScape’s Elder God Wars saga launches today. This endgame moment will decide the fate of RuneScape’s world of Gielinor, making it a must-play update. Elder God Wars: Extinction brings to a close the wars of the Elder Gods and delivers challenging combat and high-level questing content.

Elder God Wars: Extinction is the first major RuneScape release in 2022 and is the closing chapter of the Elder God Wars storyline, which began more than a year ago and has since seen multiple battlefronts and cameos of beloved characters from across RuneScape’s epic 20-year history. This also marks the first Grandmaster Quest since 2016, which means that this content will be a challenge for even the most experienced adventurers.

Combat arenas play a large part in Elder God Wars: Extinction and can earn players rich and innovative rewards, including brand new skilling areas with access to high-tier resources for the expert fishers, hunters, crafters, fletchers, constructors, and botanists.

Elder God Wars: Extinction is the epic conclusion to our 20th anniversary celebrations,” said Matt Casey, Product Director, RuneScape. “Players can expect familiar faces and enemies as they journey across Gielinor as this concluding chapter in the Elder God Wars saga unfolds. Of course, when one chapter ends, another begins and the whole team is excited for players to see what happens next and where we take RuneScape’s story from here.”

Elder God Wars: Extinction is live today in RuneScape on PC, Steam, iOS, and Android, complete with cross-platform progression and play on PC and mobile.

]]>
For these MMORPGS, the rest of 2022 will be vital – they need current issues solved, more content, better communication, and most of all, player numbers to rise.

RIFT

When Trion Worlds become a part of Gamigo all those years ago, many RIFT players were cautiously optimistic. Prior to that, the 2009 launched MMORPG had just wrapped up an experimental classic server called RIFT Prime that proved popular, and saw many return to the game. The future looked bright, before it all went stale. RIFT hasn’t gotten any substantial new content in over 4 years. Earlier this year Gamigo said that a big update with new content would be coming in 2022, but it has been delayed. When it finally arrives, will it be enough to satisfy what’s left of the RIFT playerbase? This is one MMORPG that’s definitely on the rails and worth keeping an eye on.

Diablo Immortal

Remember the backlash Blizzard received when they announced that the next Diablo game would be a mobile MMORPG? Well, NetEase and Blizzard are gearing up to launch it on Android and iOS this summer, and they’ve done a pretty good job at weathering the storm thus far. The closed beta test was a massive success, and pre-registration numbers are looking good. If they can manage to sustain the hype post-launch, while maintaining a good game that’s catered for both Diablo and MMORPG enthusiasts, then it should be a big win.

Crowfall

Crowfall is in a sticky situation. Unlike other MMORPGs that go for a wider audience with the tried and tested PvE theme-park attractions and PvP content, Crowfall is primarily a PvP MMO with RvR modes that aren’t permanent. When it launched out of early access, things were looking good for awhile, but the issues began to show. Its crafting system was hugely complicated, and outside of prime hours, the Crowfall campaign maps were just empty with nothing to do for smaller groups or solo players. In fact, it isn’t solo friendly at all, which is something most modern MMORPG titles try to accomodate. In late 2021, developers ArtCraft sold everything to Monumental, an indie studio, and it is unsure if they would collaborate in the future. So where does that leave Crowfall? With player numbers dwindling and interest waning, Crowfall needs to push out something extraordinary in 2022.

New World

Amazon Game Studios has two MMORPGs on opposite trajectories. Lost Ark, which it helped publish in the West, is probably the most popular MMORPG of 2022, while New World, its flagship in-house developed MMORPG, is on a downward spiral. How did this happen? New World wasn’t even supposed to be this theme-park-ish MMORPG. It started out as a sandbox PvP survival MMO with the familiar crafting and territorial push-and-pull that offered GvG content. AGS decided to change that to make New World appeal to the masses, and here we are. New World’s launch issues are a whole different beast of course. Exploits, botting and cheating did little to help keep the many servers fair and playable, while the lack of roadmap and new content during the first three months after launch ensured that players left to return to their favorite MMORPGs, as New World had nothing else or fresh to offer. Therefore, 2022 will be a big year for New World if they want to get those player numbers raising again, which is vital for a buy to play MMORPG.
