If you haven’t heard of Brawl of Ages, you should. It’s a one versus one CCG game with tower defense mechanics. From first looks, it’s a throwback to games of yonder that were able to capture the attention of gamers who want something casually competitive. That’s what games like Hearthstone were born from, a simplified casual game with the potential to offer some serious fun.

Brawl of Ages simply brings that feeling of casual goodness back on Steam. The premise is incredibly simple. Two players are pitted against each other, and must destroy the opposition’s main tower to win. That main building is flanked by two smaller towers that shoot defensive projectiles, and are accessible by lanes. That’s where the RNG and card mechanics comes in. You get a random draw of cards from your deck that you can play at any time if you have the mana. These cards can summon soldiers on the battlefield, and you place them on grids. Strategy is needed to identify which lanes or towers needs defending or attacking. Besides soldiers, there are skills as well such as launching missiles. But enough about the basics, here’s three reasons why I had so much fun playing it.

Brawl of Ages Is Highly Accessible

What I find so attractive is that the mechanics are fool proof. Three tutorial matches and the deck-building introduction are all you need to get started. Because of that, it makes the game easy to learn and just play with friends and family for a good time. Being free to play is another plus point, and you can purchase premium currency to buy cards. But at the early stages, there is really no need for that if all you need is an hour of fun tower razing. The graphics aren’t demanding at all, and even the most potato of computers should be able to run this game without a hitch.

Fast Paced Matches Are Key

There are no waiting in queues or twaddling your fingers while your opponent decides their next move. The clock is ticking in every match, which means players are always on the offensive and defensive. Too long of a wait or time spent thinking could mean the end of one of your towers. Hence, giving the game much needed quickness and urgency in its gameplay. I really like being able to jump in matches, have a bit of a tango in there and jump our ready for the next one. It gives players the freedom and time to spend more elsewhere, like in the Vault to tweak their decks and cards.

A Visual Feast

The final piece of the puzzle needed in every CCG game are the visuals. Brawl of Ages delivers this in a great way that’s visually satisfying. As with most tower defense games, graphics and animations are going to matter. Especially considering the mass audience appeal of such a game, it has to cater to younger and older audiences at the same time. I think players will come away satisfied. The animations and art work for the various different cards, skills and soldiers are fantastic when they come to life on the map. The map itself is a visual story, with a river flowing in between. The overall set piece is something that looks like it belongs in League of Legends or DOTA.

Final words? If you are looking for a quick and easy game to play with friends and family, check out Brawl of Ages.

Fan Created Guild Wars 2 Card Game Is A Real Playable Thing

This is not a joke, there actually is a playable Guild Wars 2 card game out right now. Heroes of the Mists is a fan-made CCG game that is based off ArenaNet’s MMORPG.

UK web designer Like Dowding is the creator, and the game can be played for free right now on his site. Each of the cards are expertly designed with art style that will be familiar to many who are familiar with the MMO. You’ll see your favorite locations, characters and races too. The base deck has over two hundred custom cards at the moment, with more in development.

But how exactly does the game play? Well, the objective of this CCG is to defeat the opponent’s Hero. Each Hero will start with 80 Health and the first player to receive 80 Damage to their Hero loses the game. Each deck must contain 40 cards each. And 10 of those cards will be given by the Profession you choose which are Skill cards.

The remaining 30 cards are a combination of Minion cards that will be the damage dealers. Every turn, players will spend Endurance to summon a Minion or Skill cards to damage the opponent Hero.

As it stands, the game does sound interesting. It’s a lot like other card games out there that shares a world with their MMORPG counterparts. There seems to be a decent amount of deck-building meta as well, considering the amount of cards already available to players.

I feel that ArenaNet should sit up and take notice. Branching out into the card genre seems like the popular thing to do these days. And I say that on the fact that Hearthstone, Elder Scrolls Legends and GWENT are all pretty big right now.

Elder Scrolls Legends Finally Leaves Open Beta For PC Launch

After months of cooking in beta, Elder Scrolls Legends is officially launched on the PC this week. The MMO card game where players battle each other had months of beta testing.

Alongside release, fans will also be happy to hear that new content is on the way. Starting April 5, players can check out The Fall of the Dark Brotherhood. The content will introduce more than 25 story missions and 40 new cards to the game.

Players can also unlock new exclusive cards only available via The Fall of the Dark Brotherhood. All you have to do is just play. Oh and did I mention you could unlock three new Legendary cards too?

What excites me more than anything is that we’re getting to see new Elder Scrolls lore. Even if it is in the form of a card game, you can’t help but wonder if it’s good. The Fall of the Dark Brotherhood is said to take place prior to the events of TES V: Skyrim. And if you are a fan of The Dark Brotherhood Guild, you must want this already.

Besides the PC launch, Bethesda are also bringing the game to other platforms. The game is coming to the iPad on March 23 and Android in April. For regular smartphone users, you’ll have to wait till the summer to get your hands on the game.

Elder Scrolls Legend isn’t as streamlined and easy as Hearthstone or GWENT, but it’s good. The main attraction is the game play, where deck builds and strategies take the stage. But there is a main story campaign that is fully voiced and immersive too. There’s something for everyone in this card game, so if you’ve been holding off, I say go check it out.

Shadowverse is a free to play digital card game that’s set in an anime fantasy universe. From out of the depths, the game is fast becoming one of the best and most played games in the digital card genre.

But what is it exactly that makes Shadowverse the coolest kid on the block when it comes to card games? Our answer to that can be found below. Here’s our review of Shadowverse.

Covering The Basics

A strong starting point for any card game is evaluating the depth of cards and the synergies at play. Shadowverse has multiple deck classes, led by one hero card. Your deck will consist of several follower cards that will do damage in matches. They have hit points and an evolve cost, which we’ll talk about later. Followers generally do damage to either opponent followers or heroes, and when your opponent hero reaches zero health, you win the match.

What I like is generally how well everything works. Each deck has a unique play style, either in the form of espionage, or in the strength of drawing cards. The matches are very fast paced and strategic as a result. I can testify if needed about how addictive it can be.

Standing Out From The Crowd

Never write off a a card game, especially when it has the tools to be a leader in the genre. Shadowverse plays it smart by invoking a love for anime within the players, and the graphics and presentation does a really good job at sucking you in.

How the game stands out among competitors such as Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering is through its gameplay. There are a couple of mechanics within the game that takes digital card playing to the next level. The first, is the Evolve mechanic. During a match or duel, players get Evolve orbs that can be used to Evolve a follower card into a more powerful version. Each player can only do this twice per match, so there’s an element of quickfire strategy involved and players must know when the best time is to use them.

More Content To Chew On

I absolutely hate it when digital card games have good gameplay but falls short in every other department. PVP matches alone are not enough to hold one’s attention. Shadowverse luckily understands this, and has added in a lot more content to cater for everyone.

There’s a single player story that players can play in. The writing is good and there’s actually voice acting involved which is a nice addition. On top of having the PVE that other card games just ignore, you could also earn specific cards in the story mode that can’t be found anywhere else.

If PVE ain’t your thing, worry not. The game has a variety of game modes from random to ranked. And when things slow down, you could spend hours pouring over the hundreds of card types to build your perfect deck.

The Final Verdict

It’s hard to knock on Shadowverse because the game has many positives going for it. If anything deserves some scrutiny, it would probably be the clunky controls and the fact that adjusting the base resolution can be a pain.

But technical issues a side, you can’t fault the fun gameplay and that’s the important thing. There is a cash shop and while you can purchase currency to get booster packs, you can also earn them for free, on top of daily log in rewards.

Shadowverse knows what it takes to keep their game fun and their players happy. And for that reason, we highly recommend checking this game out especially if you love playing digital card games.

Shadowverse Welcomes Street Fighter V Cards To Its Roster

Good news for all Shadowverse players! Shadowverse is getting some brand new cross over cards with Street Fighter V.

Coming sometime in spring this year, players can expect to see some of their favorite Street Fighter characters in-game. This is the first crossover that we’ve seen in the digital collectible card game so far.

The characters will be Cammy, Chun Li, Juri, M.Bison, Vega and Karin. It’s important to note however that the cards are in fact skins. This means that they will use classes that already exist in Shadowverse. For example, the Chun Li skin will be a Swordcraft class card, which means she will be usable in any Swordcraft decks.

It’s hard to recall a time when Street Fighter characters have made appearances in any of the online card games. Therefore players of either or both franchises should be excited about this announcement.

Ever since launch, Shadowverse themselves hasn’t been doing too badly as a game. It has over 200,00 downloads on Steam and is currently the second highest played card game after Hearthstone.

What makes Shadowverse stand out from the competition is undoubtedly the level of strategy involved. There are plenty of deck or class variants in the game to keep things interesting.

The game’s unique evolve feature where players can evolve their follower cards into powerful versions is also a unique selling point. So with a solid gameplay in place, Shadowverse does have the freedom to experiment with ways to expand their player base and this cross promotion is definitely an example of that.

We’re definitely looking forward to seeing our favorite Street Fighter V characters in the game. Hopefully, more crossovers with other franchises (Final Fantasy maybe?) will be possible in the near future. What other crossovers would you like to see included? Let us know in the comments below!

GWENT Gets New Nilfgaard Faction For The Witcher Card Game

Standalone Witcher Card Game GWENT is getting a brand new faction this week. In an update released yesterday, players are now able to play as the Nilfgaard faction. The Nilfgaard faction becomes the fifth playable faction in the game, and more will likely follow suit. All players with beta access can now try out the faction in game.

The Nilfgaard faction is all about the espionage play style. This means that players are able to use mechanics to reveal cards in the opponents hand, or control the card order of a player’s deck. In a detailed blog update, developers CD Projekt Red also mentioned that the update introduced 60 new game cards. There’s also new faction-specific cards for the other existing factions like the Northern Realms, Scoia’tael and Skellige.

For fans of the “ChokeTroll” style of play from traditional CCGs such as Magic The Gathering, the Nilfgaard decks will be very fun to play. There’s nothing more satisfying then frustrating your opponent by manipulating his card hand or deck. And due to the mechanics in GWENT, saving your best cards for the third round in a best of five is always the key.

The Nilfgaard decks completely throws that play style out the window and will force opponents to find a counter. At the moment, players are still experimenting so it looks like it will be a while before we see some solid strategy deck builds and guides.

GWENT is currently in the beta testing stage, but interested players can sign up to be a play tester. GWENT is a standalone card game that will be released for PC and mobiles. The card game rose to fame in The Witcher 3, where players began an addiction for the quick-paced tavern game. The game is looking to go live sometime in 2017.
