Octopath Traveler is a fantastic, artistic and memorable game. Square Enix  created another RPG world that’s alluring, captivating and has the engaging gameplay and replay ability that’s worth the money. We don’t often recommend games out of the MMO genre, but here’s one that’s a good in-between game. What’s more, the game is currently on sale on the Steam platform. Therefore if you’re on the fence, here’s 5 reasons to definitely play this RPG.

5. Great Concept For Storytelling

The main selling point of the game is the eight unique main characters you play as. Each have their own starter areas, quests, motivations and combat skills. Playing as one, you’ll still be able to recruit all of them into your party for story banter dialogues and combat roles too. What makes this unique? Firstly, each of the protagonist’s stories are pretty well fleshed out.

4. Combat That’s No Pushover

JRPGs are always good in some sense with combat systems. More often than not, they make you strategize and think ahead. Octopath Traveler is no different, but it adds more depth to combat thanks to the characters. Some heroes like Primrose Azelhart, is able to charm NPCs into followers who will fight for you in combat when summoned. Others like H’aanit can use her pet’s ability – and a powerful one too – in combat for SP. All in all, the combat feels great for a top-down RPG game. Bosses that you fight can be unforgiving if you’re not prepared with potions or the right composition, and that’s why failing is a good thing – you learn and come back with a game plan.

3. Engaging World

The fantasy world that Octopath Traveler is set in is incredibly well developed. You and your party will journey on foot to multiple regions, and while there’s a linear feeling about that, it’s not so bad. The world is littered with side quests that offers experience points, loot and more story. Dialogues here are of the corny JRPG variety, but they work for the game. There’s also dungeons to explore and the roads are dangerous, leading to random battles out in the wild.

2. Charming Graphics and World

There’s a great sense of nostalgia and modern awe that comes with playing Octopath Traveler. It reminds me a lot of the old 8 and 16-bit NES games that are charming on the eye. The game uses some of that pixelation for environments but a large portion of it has a 3D effect, while others are 2D. That blend together with the coloration just works so well on the Nintendo Switch especially with its small screen. In TV mode, things get a little downgraded, but it’s nothing to moan about really.

1. Replay Value Is High

Completing the main story on one character took us about 50 or so hours. That’s not including full world exploration – all dungeons, caves and other areas. Considering I have 7 more characters to play as, that’s astounding replayability offered here. In addition, you’re never quite done with your first save. There’s just so much more to see and do, like get better and more jobs that are locked behind end-game style boss fights, and so much more. All in all, this has been one of the best engaging RPG games we’ve played since Zelda.

In December 2019, Pearl Abyss announced that the battle royale mode for Black Desert known as Shadow Arena would be returning in 2020, but as a standalone game this time. The news was surprising, considering that only a few months back in April 2019, the mode was shut down. Let’s revisit some reasons as to why players thought the mode shut down, and now that it’s back, let’s hope some of the reasons given here has been taken care of or improved.

Priorities

The official reason given by Pearl Abyss at the time of the closure announcement is that the studio has lost its way somewhat. From development to post launch, the Shadow Arena has been hogging valuable studio time, man power and money. This could be better spent on the core game which does make sense. For a game with millions of accounts, you can’t just ignore your core game – the sandbox open world MMORPG. Apparently, this has been happening for some time. Development of the Shadow Arena was indeed taking resources and the studio felt it was in its best interest to close the battle royale and prioritize of its game for the future.

Money

What’s not elaborated on in the official statement is a reason anybody can deduce – the Shadow Arena wasn’t profitable. Let’s be honest here. Anyone who’s played Black Desert Online for a long enough period knows the modus operandi. This is one MMORPG that monetizes players more than most, to gain some sort of advantage or convenience in-game. The Shadow Arena was just a standalone battle royale with no cash shop, no costumes since everyone looks the same, and no purchasable boosts. Put two and two together and you can understand why the core game is more profitable. At least in this department, from a business point of view it makes sense. If it’s not making money but it is taking resources, then it has to go. But it’s a shame for players who genuinely enjoy the mode, because this is the most balanced PvP players will ever get in Black Desert Online. The allure of not having to spend on enchanting or boosts to get an advantage is of course, popular with many. What doesn’t help is that huge marketing campaign the studio pushed at launch which promised the Shadow Arena will be free to play, even to players without the core game.

Hacking Issues

Another unstated reason in the official post has to do with the recent surge of hacking and bans. For whatever reason, hackers found a loophole with the Shadow Arena and have been exploiting it heavily. This forced the hand of Pearl Abyss to swing the ban hammer, and unfortunately, they missed. Plenty of legitimate players were banned in the latest round of executions that now have no way back into the game. To make matters worst, the hacking still continues. So why has Pearl Abyss failed here? The answer rolls back to reason numbers one and two: time and money. Finding that loophole for hacking means spending more time fixing things when that could be used elsewhere. The easiest way out and one that would save the studio money is to shut the mode down. And that’s exactly what they are doing.

Let’s hope all of these issues are fixed in the beta coming this month.

Don’t miss out on all the content coming out for these MMORPGs in addition to some exciting new titles that we’ll get to play sometime in 2020. Here’s what we’re excited for!

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Scandals or no, Blizzard rolls on with World of Warcraft, having just emerged mostly successful from 2019 with a host of major patch updates for its Battle for Azeroth expansion, in addition to the launch of WoW Classic, which millions of players dived into and continue to do so to-date. In 2020, players can look forward to the next expansion titled Shadowlands. We are anticipating this one eagerly for a bunch of reasons, the most obvious one – for anyone who watched the cinematic trailer – being the massive gameplay changes coming to World of Warcraft. With Shadowlands, a new level squish goes into affect where Death Knights and Demon Hunters start at level 1, and players will get to choose which expansion they prefer to quest in as they make their way leveling through the game. The new zones and introduction of Covenants will also change the dynamic of the game, giving players new and varied choices to select when it comes to expansion progression. We’ll break down Shadowlands in-depth as we get closer to launch, but it’s definitely got us hyped.

Crimson Desert

Pearl Abyss shocked many at last year’s G-STAR convention where they announced a total of 4 new MMORPGS coming in 2020. One of them is Crimson Desert; another open-world sandpark MMORPG with gorgeous graphics and action-based combat, but despite having desert in its name, it shares no relevance to the studio’s flagship MMORPG, Black Desert Online. We’re excited for Crimson Desert because its project head, Jason Jung, has promised some major things that players have never seen before from Pearl Abyss. Firstly, the game will be primarily story focused. From the teaser trailer, the story cinematics look amazing and narratively follows a mercenary leader and his gang as they learn more about the world they’ve set foot upon. It’s also visually influenced by Game of Thrones for some reason, but that’s not a bad thing as we could all do with a break from the typical Asian MMO fantasy setting. While details about the game’s payment model and exact content offering are scarce this early into the New Year, it has been confirmed that an open beta will take place in 2020 and we cannot wait.

Temtem

Humble Bundle’s rare foray into the world of publishing is set to give us a brand new MMORPG called Temtem which launches on Steam Early Access this month. If you’re hearing about it for the first time, Temtem is a monster collecting MMO, and the closest thing it compares to is Pokemon. So yes, if you’ve always wanted an open-world Pokemon style MMORPG where you and your friends can co-op, catch monsters, do battle with others or with NPCs, go on main campaign quests, enjoy a housing system and more, then this is absolutely the game for you. Its roster of monsters will obviously resemble nothing close to the original Pokemon, but we’ve seen enough to be convinced that Temtem will offer its own unique take on the genre.

MMORPGS are certainly not dying, in terms of the genre at least. We’ve seen many come and go over the years. We’ve also seen the rise of crowdfunded MMOs that are breaking away from the typical theme-park MMORPG offering, instead catering specifically to player’s wants and needs, like sandboxes, sandparks and survival style games. In 2020, we should see more indie or crowdfunded MMORPGS enter the market, and we could also lose a few more established ones. The two I’m most worried about are:

Secret World Legends/The Secret World

It’s a damn crime the way Funcom treats one of its most unique game IPs. The Secret World is a modern day, urban horror fantasy MMORPG with a heavy emphasis on narrative, world building and its Lovecraftian lore that involves three factions that rule “the secret world”. The Illuminati, Templars and Dragon are what players choose to represent, each offering a different taste to how the flavor text and dialogue cut-scenes with your handlers play out through the game.

When launched in 2012, TSW thought the subscription model would work, but as we’ve seen with so many MMORPGs that tried it after World of Warcraft, many just cannot sustain it. Thus it went buy to play, and eventually relaunched itself as Secret World Legends in 2017 with an all new free to play model. Funcom’s been quiet in the last two years about more story content or PvE content in-game, which is driving players away, and even the more hardcore ones away from the game. We did get Moons of Madness, a 2019 standalone game that’s based on the Secret World Lore, but that’s hardly new content and not enough certainly for the faithful players. While lack of content is probably the main reason for the doom and gloom, overall the game hasn’t aged well and the relaunch didn’t quite fix some issues that many felt was holding the game back and that’s the combat system.

Well here we are in 2020, with absolutely no news on whether or not Funcom intends to breathe new life into Secret World Legends and it’s safe to say this one will remain in maintenance mode until its eventual shut down. If nothing’s announced for it by the summer, I worry this will be one of the MMORPG causalities in 2020, but it shouldn’t affect Funcom – they’ve been changing their strategy, with a renewed focus on publishing (Conan, Dune, that weird Xcom like game) that’s bringing in the money, alongside Conan Exiles. It’s a shame that its other full MMORPG Age of Conan is going through something similar too.

Astellia

I’m not going to sugarcoat this one – Astellia launched in the West way too late. This Korean MMORPG generated a decent amount of buzz when it launch in September last year. It’s buy to play model and non-pay to win approach was commendable, but it’s too high a buy-in price for what it offers.

It’s a theme park MMORPG with old-school tab target combat, and players take on the role of heroes that can control Astels – little pets born and given powers from the stars. Your combat abilities are based on your chosen cookie cutter class, but the unique selling factor is that your Astells can be summoned in combat, each offering more unique skills to use and passive bonuses to your build output as well. While it works and is fun especially in group content like dungeons and PvP, there’s nothing else about the game that truly stands out from its competitors, who are letting players play for free instead.

The graphics and engine looks dated and while better than TERA and AION, still feels like it belongs in the last generation, and not worth the $30 or the optional subscription to play. The bad news is, the game has already shut down the Korean version (Nexon), and Barunson & EA who are self publishing in the West are assuring players that this won’t happen to the new version too. Good to know, but how long will it last? Which is why I feel that if Astellia came out earlier around the period when Korean theme park MMORPGs were blowing up globally, it would have given the rest a run for their money.

It’s May 2019 and World of Warcraft players are anticipating Patch 8.2 Rise of Azshara. The patch adds tons of new content and features to 2018’s Battle for Azeroth expansion. For returning and current players though, the one thing that needs immediate attention are addons. Addons help improve gameplay for a lot of folks that play WoW, and not having them enabled after years of use feels odd. Luckily, some of these addon developers have been working on updates since Patch 8.2 hit the PTR. Here are a few of the ones that you might one to keep an eye on in the coming week or so.

1. Deadly Boss Mods

Perhaps most of you will be relieved to know that DBM is updated and ready for use. Deadly Boss Mods is a universally loved addon by all WoW players who run dungeons, Mythics and raids. The addon calls out danger in addition to offering visual queues for fight mechanics. It’s a great tool for both the new player and the veteran.

Download: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/deadly-boss-mods

2. World Quest List

With Patch 8.2 so close, many players will still be rushing to complete Pathfinder Part 2 to unlock flying. The 8.2 patch requires reputations to be done if you haven’t grinded them out yet, so world quests are going to be important.. So it’s a no brainer that folks leveling alts would use World Quest List. This addon lists all the available WQs on both Zandalar and Kul Tiras. Excellent for task-doers and rep hunters.

Download: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/world-quests-list

3. GTFO

Similar to Deadly Boss Mods, GTFO is the audio queue companion to DBM’s visual ques. The addon lets you select voice alerts to warn you when you’re standing in the sh**. It’s perfectly usable in 8.0 with the addon update and most can’t play without this either.

4. WeakAuras

WeakAuras is a powerful and flexible framework that allows you to display highly customizable graphics on your screen to indicate buffs, debuffs, and a whole host of similar types of information. Players have been using this on World of Warcraft for years to customize the look and feel of the UI. It also helps you display as much information about combat situations as possible.

5. Details! (World of Warcraft Damage Meter)

Simply put, Details! is the best damage meter available for World of Warcraft. Players using this addon can see their damage, heal and other combat numbers during fights. This is especially great for min-maxers and end-game content hunters. The addon let’s you customize the look as well as show more than simple details at a flash. This includes what classes are doing the highest numbers, which spells and abilities are hitting hardest and more.

Who loves MMORPG reputation grinds, hands up! We don’t, and we recollect some games that helped us feel that way.

5. RIFT

Currently on Live, rep grinds aren’t as bad as they used to be. These days, it’s dimension items and other non-fancy stuff that won’t impact your progress too much if you don’t have it. Why? You can buy the best gear from the in-game cash shop. But back in the day, rep grinds with RIFT’s factions was pretty painful. Many of them often held the key to getting rare items that were necessary for raid clears. Even PvP had factions and were important for getting PvP dedicated gear. On the Prime server, much of this has been toned down for a less patient generation, and that’s a rather good thing.

4. Revelation Online

Revelation Online has a very extensive reputation system that will take players many months to master. In exchange, you will receive some unique cosmetics and crafting materials not available anywhere else. Some of the best crafting recipes in the game also require Obsidian reputation rank in specific reputations, which can take months to acquire for diligent players. The thing is, much of what dailies you’ll be doing are locked behind daily and weekly timers, which is where the real pain is at. So be sure to do all those non repeatable quest chains and then move on.

3. The Lord of the Rings Online

Launched at a time when the classic style of MMORPGs was at its prime, LOTRO had a lot of systems modeled after World of Warcraft. Regrettably, it implemented the faction rep grind system. LOTRO has tons of factions to grind rep for, but the good news is in much of the game’s content, they don’t offer that good a reward worth grinding for. That is until the recent Mordor expansion. Players were required to grind keys and farm dailies and farm more dailies of Allegiance rep in addition to the landscape faction rep just to do some of the basic content and progress. This was a painfully slow system that tied a lot of players down in Mordor for months on end, and it’s caused nothing but burnout.

2. RuneScape

For its time, the rep grinds in RuneScape were clever. They weren’t just a means to provide shiny new armor and gear. The grinds were also meant to plug the gaps in between content releases. This kept players busy for months and months in order to buy time for the next content update. Many of us still remember grinding for Menaphos reputations, which still gives players nightmares.

1. World of Warcraft

Perhaps here lies the culprit. The game that made the reputation grinding mechanic a must copy for future MMORPGs. World of Warcraft’s huge world, setting and factions are all great for the game. They expand the already growing world these factions are very important for progression – as it has been since vanilla. Things become heated during the Battle for Azeroth announcement, when it was made known that players needed to be Exalted (highest tier) reputation with the two Argus factions in order to unlock two of the newest Allied Races for BFA. This didn’t sit too well with most casual players, as grinding rep in Argus is slow, tedious in addition to RNG based as some rep items drop from world bosses and quests. This is one mechanic we want to see less off in future WoW expansions, but we’re not holding our breaths.

Guild Wars 2 has released its latest episode of Season 4, All or Nothing free for all players in the final Welcome to Guild Wars 2 campaign this week. The 5th episode wraps up the Kralkatorrik storyline and also introduces a new map, fractal and legendary weapon. Having gone through the good stuff, here’s our review of All or Nothing.

Season 4’s Story Doesn’t End The Way You Think

In Episode 5, players are finally ready to face Kralkattorik, the Elder Dragon that’s been terrorizing Tyria this entire season. Picking up where we last left off in Episode 4, our band of heroes finally decides to lure Kralkatorric to Thunderhead Keep, where we have discovered a way to end his existence. With Scion and Champion at the helm, what could go wrong? The answer is everything. While we won’t share spoilers here, All or Nothing provided a huge emotional twist ending that leaves the future of Tyria in turmoil.

The Map Is Pretty Huge

Guild Wars players are returning to Thunderhead Peaks for the first time since the first game in this episode. Naturally, there are a few modern differences this time around, thanks to the Kralkatorrik and his branded minions. The map itself is pretty large and definitely the biggest this season, with plenty of events to do and places to explore. Expect the usual meta chain events, PoI, Vistas, Heart tasks and more.

Pharus Legendary Longbow Is Sweet

Episode 5 All or Nothing also gave players a brand new generation 2 legendary weapon to craft. Pharus is a light-themed longbow with an intricate design. While in use, it shifts into a mass of white light in the shape of a bow, complete with a bowstring of light. In its stowed state, the bow is solid, and marginally smaller as well as subtler in appearance. It does have a precursor and like most legendaries, requires a ton of materials. Ultimately, it’s a solid looking longbow for anyone that wants the cosmetic.

The Map Events Are Unique

This time around, the we know exactly what’s happening on a Season 4 map: we’re attempting to kill an Elder Dragon in Guild Wars 2, not for the firs time. With that in mind, most of the map events and the meta are centered around this. Everyone that’s an ally to your cause is here, and are making preparations for the big final fight. The two meta events take place both north and south of the Thunderhead Peaks, and they are different yet connected.

The north or Keep meta, involves storming Thunderhead Keep with Logan, Rytlock and Canach to kill a boss in order to receive a top half of a Light of Deldrimor plate. The south event is all about gathering oil which drops the bottom half. Combine the two for a daily puzzle event that is necessary to unlock the Dragonsblood weapons for the collection. Both are decent with lots of players, but can feel repetitive if done daily. You can also buy the two plates separate or combine from the Trading Post if you don’t want to do the meta events daily.

The New Dragonsblood Weapons Collection Is Going To Take Awhile

Above we covered what’s needed to get started on these weapons. Simply put, you’ll need to do the two map meta events daily to loot the hidden chest in the keep catacombs. The map currency – branded mass – is also required in large quantities alongside Laurels in order to barter for Dragonsblood weapon recipes. So are they worth doing? It’ll take months to get a full sett for the casual player, and it’s an alternative way to get both exotics and ascended weapons down the line. The diviner stats on them means Guardians, Revenants and Memsers benefit the most, but remember you can always change stats later on. Aesthetically, the look and glow can be seen below.

Pirate themed open world sandbox Atlas has not had the best of launches. Since its announcement and launch in late 2018, the game has been plagued with issues. Developers Grapeshot Games are working to amend things however, with Update 1.5 which launched today. Here’s everything you need to know about the update.

Three Month’s Worth Of Updates

Update 1.5 is a revised vision of the pirate survival MMO, after a three month culmination of intensely focused development to improve core game mechanics. The Atlas map is now expanded with 40% more land and exotic regions to explore and claim within the new “Colonies” game mode. “Colonies” takes place on a fresh network, and is designed with progress-protecting and offline-raiding rules to facilitate a cooperative atmosphere, geared towards smaller and more casual groups. This massive content and QOL update also delivers deep sea “Super Trenches,” eight new mission questlines, a Submarine vehicle, procedurally-generated Shipwrecks, new weapons, cosmetics and more

Colonies System Redesign

In “Colonies,” hosted on a fresh new network, players claim “Island Settlements” where they can set customized PvP hours to have the much-coveted “offline raid protection.” Anyone can build – with specialized rules – on other settlers’ islands, and players benefit from cooperating with other settlers within an island to reduce its “upkeep” cost. They can rename the island to their liking, while declaring war on other islands if they want to go on the offense. The originally launched open-PvP mode is now known as “Empires,” whereas PvE will be a modified version of Colonies.

New Deep Ocean Trench Environment and Submarine

A new area to explore, guarded by powerful underwater creatures and home to the Giant Crab! The Giant Crab can carry heavy loads, along with players, tames and wild creatures. The Submarine vehicle on the other hand, allows pirates explore the depths of the ocean. The small scouting submarine has claw arms to help harvest the ocean floor and explore (or demolish!) player shipwrecks – comes equipped with a harpoon that will ramp up oceanic combat.

New Missions and Quests

In addition to the good stuff above, the game also now has a new Mainline Quest. Players are tasked with gathering nine valuable trench stones before gathering allies and defeating the hard mode Kraken for riches. Moreover, there’s seven additional Quests that upon successful completion, unlock their own unique skill for players to use. These make up the basis of the game’s linear style PvE, but as with anything in Atlas you can bring friends, and beware of other players lurking nearby.

Procedurally Generated Shipwrecks

Players can explore these abandoned vessels for items and blueprints to bolster their crafting arsenal. Discover these ships by either diving deep into the ocean, looking out for their visual indicator on the surface of the water, or successfully completing the sextant mini-game which will point you in the right direction.

There’s a ton more coming with Update 1.5, and below are a few key highlights:

  • Player Shops: Players can set up automated shops, listing loot for sale and naming their price!
  • New Cosmetics: Hook hands, Peg Legs and multiple Armor Sets to customize the look of your company and crew! Also, new Ship cosmetics!
  • ‘Human Catapult’ Mechanic: Deploy characters into battle by launching them into the air!
  • Guillotine: Hanging your foes in a noose taking too long? Off with their heads!
  • A new secure person-to-person trading system
  • Explosive Barrels can now be carried by hand, thrown overboard to sink and give a “Depth Charge” when colliding with anything underwater.
  • “Snow” weather system for both Polar and Tundra cold regions.
  • The beautiful Aurora Borealis light now displays in specific regions – see it and grab a harvesting bonus!

The Elder Scrolls Online is only a few months away from dropping its latest Chapter Elsweyr. However, that’s not slowing down the hype for brand new content. For the first time, Elsweyr will be explorable to players – the home of the Khajiit race. With the new Chapter, players can experience an epic Season of the Dragon story, challenge your team with a new 12-player Trial, and master the dark arts with the Necromancer Class. However, if you’re interested in exploring Khajiiti culture and life, there’s plenty to be excited about in the new zone, too. Check out just some of our travel suggestions below.

Soak In Elsweyr’s Warm Sands

In Elsweyr, you can explore a massive new zone unlike anything you’ve seen before in the Elder Scrolls. The homeland of the Khajiiti people is filled with incredible things to see and do, and during your travels, you can pass through bustling palatial cities, desolate canyons, and fertile moon-sugar fields. As you venture across this colorful and curious landscape, be sure to visit the northern city of Rimmen (currently under harsh Imperial occupation) or take in a prophecy or two at the remote Two-Moons Temple, found deep within the forests of the Tenmar Borderlands.

Hunt Dragons (But Don’t Do It Alone)

Thanks to Abnur Tharn’s meddling, Dragons now soar the skies over Elsweyr. If you’re feeling up to the task, gather your fiercest allies and hunt the scaled beasts in these new zone events. You can find them flying above certain areas, and you’ll need to stalk them and wait for the perfect opportunity to attack to bring them down. Of course, even if you force a Dragon to fight you on your terms, you’re in for a challenge. These beasts are far more dangerous than the Dark Anchors or Abyssal Geysers of the other zones, and working with a large group gives you the best chance of success. You’ve been warned.

Learn The About The Khajit

While Elsweyr features an incredible main questline, should you choose, you can find all manner of unique standalone adventures just by exploring. These quests help you gain insight into the wonderful and often puzzling world and culture of the Khajiit and introduce you to the many different aspects of life in the Khajiiti homeland. As you complete these quests, you’ll learn about the history, mythology, and modern-day life of the zone’s native inhabitants. To get you started, we recommend checking out Merryvale Farms, a picturesque moon-sugar plantation due east of the Valenwood Gate. You might encounter a familiar face when you do!

Explore Dungeons And Delves

Elsweyr is an ancient land, and if you’re looking for excitement and adventure, you can find it in one of its five Delves or two Public Dungeons. Most solo adventurers can explore the Delves alone, such as the ancient Tomb of the Serpents—just watch out for menacing Akaviri spirits. However, if you wish to venture into one of the Public Dungeons, it might be wise to bring a team—the monsters that dwell within, such as the skeletal Khajiit warriors and Daedra in Rimmen Necropolis, can prove challenging for unwary solo adventurers.

Wipe Out Deadly Threats

Dragons aren’t the only monsters plaguing the home of the Khajiit. The region is full of roaming bandits, vicious beasts, and undead creatures that plague the local populace. Six world bosses scattered across the zone need to be defeated if you want to restore peace to Elsweyr. These world bosses include deadly Akaviri Swordmasters, a fearsome Senche-raht Necromancer, members of a Khajiit criminal syndicate, and more. All of these bosses have challenging mechanics and abilities to overcome—good luck!

These are just some of the amazing experiences you can have when exploring the Elder Scrolls Online’s Elsweyr zone. Whether you’re looking for a fight, want to immerse yourself in a unique culture, or simply want a new adventure, why travel Elsweyr?
