Guild Wars 2 is preparing to drop the first chapter of its Icebrood Saga finale next week titled truce, but right now, the game is offering a tasty expansion discount for new and returning players.

2017’s Path of Fire expansion is currently on sale – both standard and deluxe editions – at 50% off. That brings the total price down to $15 and $27 respectively. Path of Fire takes players to Elona on a hunt for a literal God gone rogue, but the story is only a small taste of the massive gameplay changes the expansion introduced. All classes received brand new Elite Specializations, while Mounts were introduced to the game for the first time, forever altering the gameplay for the better.

Be sure to take advantage of this sale now, as you’ll need PoF to get access to the Living World Stories, and do note that the game’s first expansion, Heart of Thorns will come bundled in for free too.

Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire Original Soundtrack Now Available On iTunes And Amazon

If you enjoy Guild Wars 2’s Path of Fire expansion soundtracks and themes, here’s some good news. The original soundtrack is coming directly to both iTunes and Amazon for players to purchase digitally. Path of Fire introduces some excellent scores, most notable in the log-in screen and throughout the Crystal Desert maps.

While popular video game composer Jeremy Soule is no longer at the helm, his successors are equally as good. The digital download features 40 tracks composed by Maclaine Diemer, Wilbert Roget II, Brendon Williams, and Stan LePard exclusively for Guild Wars 2‘s second expansion.

In addition to the digital tracks, there’s even a vinyl version too. You can pre-order the special Collector’s Edition 2xLP Vinyl today from iam8bit. This release includes both the Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire Original Soundtrack on vinyl and a digital download code, so you can enjoy the music of the Crystal Desert wherever your journey takes you.

If you don’t want to spend money on this, there are other places where the OST might show up. ArenaNet do upload their soundtracks to their official Soundcloud page, so be sure to check there.

It’s a bold statement, but Path of Fire is definitely the best if not a leading contender for best MMO content release this year. Hear me out. To state the obvious first, there aren’t many expansions out this year from AAA titles that were significant. Elder Scrolls Online did release Morrowind, which is an incredible homage to an iconic location. It also shakes up gameplay with a brand new Warden class and a new PvP Arena mode to boot. Big changes no doubt. But not as significant as what Guild Wars 2’s done. And since Blizzard doesn’t have an expansion for World of Warcraft this year, that leaves the door wide open for Guild Wars 2 to shine. So what’s so significant about Path of Fire? Read on.

Adding Mounts 5 Years Late Is Ballsy & Brilliant

These days, it’s almost unthinkable for an MMORPG to launch without mounts. Modern MMOs almost always have them, because it’s one of those player travel tropes that must be ticked on a list. When Guild Wars 2 launched without em, some eyebrows were raised. There’s lost of running around, and for years and years, players rely on Class buffs to boost running speed. Waypoints are also scattered throughout Tyria, so traveling around didn’t have a need for mounts.

So when Path of Fire was announced and mounts with it, that kinda left a lot of us stumped. Why do we need mounts, and how exactly will it add anything to the core gameplay? Little did we know, ArenaNet had a plan, and goodness did it work. The 5 new mounts each have unique abilities that significantly changes how you play the game. Exploration, jumping puzzles and activities involving map completion are all made so much better now thanks to these abilities. Not to mention, the individual controls and movement of these mounts – from the Raptor to the Griffon – is incredibly fluid.

The Griffon mount is the ultimate collector’s mount. It flies/glides and crosses maps easily.

Welcoming Back Traditional Maps

The last Guild Wars 2 expansion, Heart of Thorns, did split the player base somewhat. For starters, the meta changed. Dynamic events had multiple layers and tiers, and tasks were removed from maps. Every map also had different layers, from ground level to the canopies. This may be fun for exploration enthusiasts, but the reality is that it’s a pain. Navigation required a bunch of mastery grinding especially if you want to get the most out of these maps.

Path of Fire completely does away with a lot of that grief. The five new maps are inherently traditional, and goes back to MMO roots. They’re large, single layer and more importantly, incorporates mounts very well. There’s a lot of things we expect from Guild Wars 2 maps too, like hidden vistas and explorable content. But ultimately it’s that familiarity of a traditional MMORPG map that makes it all the more alluring. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the Heart of Thorns maps. But it felt way out of place when compared to the maps in Path of Fire.

The Main Story Keeps Getting Better

I’m not going to lie. The vanilla personal stories in Guild Wars 2 are boring as hell. Painfully slow build up, predictable writing and a cast of characters that may as well be card boards. Things do get a lot better as the plot, writing, and ensemble of side characters steps up a notch in quality in Season 2 onward. Your character becomes the focus, a new guild takes shape and the villains get better too. All throughout the Living World Season 3, I was kept on my toes and engaged in the writing. Not to mention, the boss fights were really on point. No other MMO has main story boss fights that literally makes me tense.

In Path of Fire, the culmination of all that Season 3 build up since the HoT expansion pays off big time. I’m not going to spoil anything, but damn it, the writing just keeps getting better! It’s almost like your own interactive TV series now. There’s a lot more voice dialogue, narrative beats keeps you invested and the story in this expansion ties up a lot of loose ends. The ending also sets up the next content updates too, which I now cannot wait for.

Environments and biomes are gorgeous in Path of Fire.

Overall? Path of Fire was totally worth the $29.99. No subscription, a hell of a lot more PvE content in the form of Bounties, and we haven’t even touched on the new elite specializations for classes. Just trust me on this one, if you play Guild Wars 2, then pick up Path of Fire asap.

ArcheAge Begins Will Be On Mobiles October 25th

Only a couple of months ago, ArcheAge Begins started beta testing. Today, we officially have a release date, and it’s coming to mobile devices on October 25th!

ArcheAge Begins will be available on both the App Store and Google Play. The mobile game is based on the MMORPG for the PC, but takes place in another universe. It’s also running on Unreal Engine 4, which means that it will look pretty good on mobiles. In addition, it comes with 30 heroes from the ArcheAge universe that players and fans will recognize.

So what is the mobile game all about? Think of it as more of a companion game if you well. There will be content such as PvE and PvP. Firstly, there’s fishing, trading and housing, which sounds pretty cool. PvP battles will take place against other players either solo or in a party. The fights will utilize card systems which makes it interesting, considering that it is a mobile MMO.

Whether or not any rewards earned in Begins carries over to the PC MMORPG remains to be seen. But for now, ArcheAge players should rejoice – there’s now one more avenue to explore in the AA universe!

Reminder: Guild Wars 2’s Path of Fire Expansion Launches Today

Prepare yourselves, Path of Fire will be launching today! Guild Wars 2’s latest expansion is the second in the franchise, and is set in Elona, the Crystal Desert. It’s a popular zone especially among Guild Wars players, having visited in the first game.

The new expansion brings with it a large new play area with a multitude of content. First up and for the first time ever, mounts are coming to Guild Wars 2. Players will be able to acquire new mounts such as Raptors to ride through the desert. You will need them and their unique skills and movement abilities to access hidden and hard to reach areas.

In addition to that, all classes also have a brand new elite specialization to earn. These allows each class to pick up a brand new weapon and learn new combat skills. However, the main attraction is obviously the new story content. At the end of the Living World Season 3 story, the Human god Balthazaar is up to no good, and want to hunt the Elder Dragons with bad intentions. It’s the player’s job to track him down and put a stop to his schemes.

Path of Fire is now available for purchase, and don’t miss the countdown stream on Twitch here.

Guild Wars 2 Releases Path of Fire Story Developer Video

Another week, another Guild Wars 2 developer diary leading up to the Path of Fire expansion. In this week’s entry, ArenaNet goes over the stories and narratives that players will experience in the new expansion.

Elona in the Crystal Desert is one of the most iconic locations for Guild Wars players. Since the first game, players have been craving to go back and Path of Fire will deliver that experience. One of the most notable changes in the new story line is that of the antagonist. For the past few years, the main narrative centers around players working with characters to take down Elder Dragons. While they are a dire threat to the world of Tyria, the developers did not want to keep that rolling on an on in fear of a burnout. Therefore, the videos goes in-detail as to why the human god Balthazaar is set up as Path of Fire’s antagonist.

For one, he’s motives and intentions are far more relate-able than an Elder Dragon, who are forces of nature. He also incites conflicts within some of the game’s characters that join players in their adventures. For example, Kasmeer. She’s a devout follower of the human gods, so what happens when she’s now forced to face him? It’s these narrative beats that makes Guild Wars 2’s story interesting, and we can’t wait to see more.

Check out the full developer diary video below.

Mount Developer Diary Sheds More Light On What To Expect In Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire

The Path of Fire expansion arrives less than a month away and Guild Wars 2 is offering players a closer look at mounts. In the latest developer diary, the mounts team goes into detail, explaining a good deal about the system.

One of the major factors in its conception was how successful Gliding turned out to be. Gliding in the Heart of Thorns expansion gave players an incredibly amount of freedom. ArenaNet were able to take that and build content around Gliding, such as puzzles and meta events. Having it gated behind the mastery system also gave players that sense of progression.  That is a common complaint about the game – it felt like there was none.

With that in mind, Mounts seems to be the logical next step. The dev team goes on to say that mounts will move and navigate incredibly well, as the joy of movement is a top priority. Come September 22nd, there will four mounts for players to obtain, each with special abilities and unique movement:

The Mounts

  • The vicious raptor leaps swiftly across great distances, making them useful for crossing large canyons. By holding down the hotkey, a leap will continue to its maximum distance. You can also release the hotkey early to drop out of the leap, which consumes less endurance.
  • The cute springer has an unrivaled ability to jump straight up into the sky. You can use it to jump over cliffs, walls, and other hard-to-reach locations. Hold down the hotkey to charge the jump; the longer you charge, the farther up you’ll go.
  • The floating skimmer hovers over water, terrain, and small obstacles. Its movement ability lifts it significantly higher, so it can cross dangerous areas, reach ledges, and avoid attacks. You can hold down the hotkey to remain in the lifted state as long as you have sufficient endurance.
  • The mysterious jackal is made of sand and can store up to three charges of a quick movement-speed blink, which dissipates its body and allows it to reappear a short distance ahead. It can also use special sand portals throughout the desert. You’ll maintain your momentum as you blink through the portals, creating interesting combinations for puzzles in the Crystal Desert.

Mounts Are Coming To Guild Wars 2 With Path Of Fire Expansion

In case you missed the news, Guild Wars 2 announced the Path of Fire expansion today. In a livestream, ArenaNet showed players what exactly is coming on September 22nd. Among them will be player mounts, a first for the game since it’s inception in 2012.

The new expansion will take place in the Crystal Desert, a huge region consisting of five maps. These are a combination of beautiful biomes, full of explorable areas and jumping puzzles. Because the area to cover will be vast, the developers are including mounts as a means to get around. But that’s not all they will be good at, unlike traditional MMORPGs that use mounts. In the Path of Fire expansion, mounts will have unique movement skills. Raptors can jump long distances while others can get to higher ground, which changes how players use mounts on the landscape.

In addition to mounts, nine new elite specialization will be coming for each of the classes. All classes will now be able to use a new weapon previously unavailable to them, with some interesting dynamics thrown in. In terms of the story, Path of Fire picks up where Season 3 of the Living World Story ends. Players will be chasing the god Balthazaar, who’s interest in hunting the Elder Dragons takes him to the Crystal Desert.

You can preorder the new expansion right now, and there are three packages available. The standard is the cheapest at $29.99, while the ultimate will cost $79.99, which some great value thrown in the form of 4,000 gems. For more information on Guild Wars 2 and the new expansion, check out the official website here.
