War in RuneScape’s world of Gielinor heats up to a new level today with the launch of The TzekHaar Front, providing players with the most challenging boss yet along with powerful rewards in the final epic battlefront in the living game’s year-long Elder God Wars story arc.

The TzekHaar Front sees PC and mobile players joining arms to battle against Elder God Fuls’ powerful army The TzekHaar, a new race of deadly and menacing creatures. Those that prevail against these minions are then faced with the ultimate Elder God Wars combat test so far – General TzKal-Zuk. The pure combat challenge is fought in multiple waves and has adjustable difficulty allowing those who want an extra challenge for better drops.

Defeating the forces of Ful unlocks RuneScape’s best in slot cape; tier 95 TzKal-Zuk’s 2H sword; new magic ability; a boss pet & skin; and a Ful God book. In addition, lucrative drops from the creatures before you enter the battle arena.

The Elder God Wars battlefront began in July and received great acclaim and popularity from the RuneScape community, it’s also seen an impressive slaughter of over 27million boss kills committed. The previous three battlefronts included The Nodon Front with an epic showdown against the Kerapac boss, The Glacor Front featuring RuneScape’s first ever fully customisable encounter boss, followed by The Croesus Front showcasing RuneScape’s first ever skilling boss, a difficult battle which required strategy and teamwork.

The TzekHaar Front is now live in RuneScape on PC, Steam, iOS, and Android, complete with cross-platform progression and play across all platforms. Check out the trailer below.

Classic servers, limited time servers and fresh start servers have become increasingly popular in MMORPGs. Over the past two years, plenty of MMORPGs – especially long running ones – have released new servers that roll back to the early days of its beginnings to offer players a walk down memory lane. Lord of the Rings Online has their Legendary Servers, while WoW has WoW Classic and even The Burning Crusade Classic coming up.  With the hype and positivity surrounding classic servers in addition to the benefits it brings to classic MMORPGs, which games could use fresh start servers in 2021 to give the game and its player population a boost?

TERA

TERA used to rule the world of Asian MMORPGs for a time, with its tactical action combat system which was ahead of its time, until Black Desert came along. TERA in 2021 is all but a shadow of its former self, with player numbers whittling down. While the game has gone through many changes since launch and even a change of publisher and platform, things aren’t looking rosy for this once beloved action combat MMORPG. This is where classic servers or limited time progression servers, where the focus is more on events or leveling for rewards to bring back to the main server once it’s over could definitely help entice players to come back.

Star Wars The Old Republic

SWTOR is on a road to recovery this past couple of years, with solid game updates that have changed the new player experience, and added to the game with more story content which is satisfying for veterans and more.

A fresh start server here that hearkens back to the humble beginnings of the Republic vs. Empire would excite many players, where the focus is on level 50, and perhaps some timed leveling events offering free ways to gain much sought after items from the store that one could take back to the live servers would all be things players might like. Knowing “EAware”, they would charge a sub for this server, but you’d be surprised at how many would pay up for that close to vanilla experience.

Final Fantasy XIV

While FFXIV certainly doesn’t need any help with player numbers, this popular subscription MMORPG by Square Enix has no reason for an event server of any sort. Or does it? A classic FFXIV server could definitely be interesting, as it focuses on the vanilla game to give new players an chance to experience what it was like at the beginning, or for veterans to relive their early days. The problem is, vanilla FFXIV wasn’t all that great was it, as the newer expansions, its stories and dungeons and raids are what truly makes the game. So while this one is up for debate, it may happen in the future when FFXIV gets older.

Independent developer Phase Two Games has announced that their squad-based fantasy adventure RPG Battle Hunters is now available on Steam for PC and Nintendo Switch.

Players will command a team of adventurous heroes, plunging headlong into dungeons, caves, forests and swamps as they heed the call for help from the old Wizard, and embark upon a journey beset with danger at every turn.

With a more strategic approach to combat through a combination of turn-based and real-time action, Battle Hunters gives players the opportunity to build a uniquely skilled team of 3 adventurers ready for battle. With a roster of 28 unique hero characters to discover and choose from, including the Wizard, the Barbarian, the Rogue or the cursed Dreadknight – Battle Hunters provides a huge variety of choice when deciding who to bring to the fight.
Different heroes bring a range of strengths and weaknesses to the battle, and with such a wide array of enemies to confront, the player must use the right combination of heroes to suit their own battle style, and to ensure victory.

“We’re excited to bring Battle Hunters to PC and Nintendo Switch and hope that players enjoy our classic-style RPG. Battle Hunters is inspired by great RPGs of the past, but we think we’ve brought a fresh approach and some genuine innovation to the gameplay.” – Dan Tonkin Co-Founder of Phase Two Games.

Players will face off against devious goblins and lumbering trolls, as well as vicious gargoyles and unstoppable stone golems so creating a formidable band of heroes with the right skills can make the difference between defeat and victory. Battle Hunters is an adventure created in the style of older classics, with a new approach to combat, character classes and abilities.

A free demo can be downloaded from the Battle Hunters page on Steam.  Check out the trailer below:

Fantasy strategy browser games are still in business, and contrary to popular belief, makes a lot of money for game publishers. Players however don’t care about that. We all want something that’s free and fun to play, so what are the top free to play strategy browser games of 2020 with a dash of fantasy?

#1 League Of Angels 2

League of Angels 2 is the sequel to the much beloved first, and is one of the best browser MMORPGs on the market today. Players must recruit their squad of angels and embark on adventurous quests to save the planet. What makes the game unique is the fast-paced combat that is strategic and fun. Your decisions will matter, especially how you go about building your party for combat. Each angel has unique abilities that can be triggered to maximize the total party’s damage output. On top of a good story line, the world of Sapphire itself is deep in lore and very immersive. There’s a lot of free content here for players to enjoy, and spending money is completely optional.

#2 Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming

As an officially licensed game of HBO’s hit TV series Game of Thrones, this browser game has a lot to live up to. GTarcade has created a very pretty strategy browser game featuring all the iconic characters from the show. In true strategy fashion, the gameplay of empire building is the same formula as it’s ever been – build, research and recruit – all taking time to complete that real money can finish quickly. But Winter Is Coming also does a few things differently, like emphasizing on its Commander mini-game, where players can collect heroes like Robb Stark to fight side battles, go on expeditions and even man the kingdom’s defenses against attackers. It’s just another layer of RPG micromanagement to an already exhausted strategy sim that fans of Game of Thrones might just like. As for other pros, the graphics are hands down one of the best we’ve seen for a browser game. Expect to be spending plenty of real money though. Official games like these are the perfect cash cows.

#3 Vikings: War of Clans

In Vikings: War of Clans, your task as a Jarl is to strategically raise your village into a Viking empire. Be prepared for the eventuality of war too. Other player’s and their villages are situated nearby to you on the map. War in the form of raids are huge possibility the more you play, so what do you do? That’s where some strategy and planning comes into play. You have to plan the resource buildings within your kingdom to maximize your armies. Train from several tiers of Viking themed soldiers and units to defend yourself and attack others. You are given a Hero too, who gains levels and uses gear that will help you greatly. But don’t forget your technological research! Strategize which research boons will aid you greatly when just starting out, and that should help you in the late game. This is one of the best games of the genre in recent years, plus Vikings, so it’s a win-win.

vikings: war of clans

#4 League of Angels 3

The world of League of Angels in the third installment is about to be destroyed by an ancient threat, and players are sent back in time to collect legendary weapons and recruit powerful companions to prevent this catastrophe. The game features full 3D graphics that looks excellent on any browser. Questing remains largely unchained from the second game, whereby players follow a theme-park style quest chain that is tied to the main story. Along the way, players will unlock more gameplay mechanics such as manual combat, mounts, dungeons and more.

Combat and progression has been given a face-lift and feels significantly better than before. You will need to collect heroes that joins your party in formation during turn-based combat sequences that feels strategic and fun. At end-game, there are high level world boss fights and other content to do, which makes the journey there worthwhile. While the in-game cash shop may be attractive, plenty of things on sale serve to speed up progression and are not necessary for purchase to play the game effectively.

#5 MU Ignition

Save the world of Mu from a new threat in MU Ignition, a browser-based MMORPG. Choose to be a Dark Knight, Dark Wizard, or an Angel, each with their own skill trees. Complete quests and defeat enemies to level up and distribute stat points to build your character to match your playstyle. Synthesize and enhance armor and weapons found as loot. Tackle various dungeons in parties of up to four which automatically adjust to the party’s overall level. Participate in PvP at the Chaos Castle as an individual and join a guild to partake in team-based battles. Acquire a mount to move faster in the game world and get pets that will guard and protect your main character.

GTarcade’s Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming is a brand new web browser and desktop strategy game, that’s officially licensed by HBO’s titanic TV show. The game has all the hallmarks of a standard empire/kingdom building game, but don’t let that fool you. There’s surprisingly plenty of depth that while structured in a way to get the most out of your wallet, it can be enjoyed for absolutely free. Here are Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming’s top 5 best features to whet your appetite.

Rewarding Alliance System

Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming is best experienced in a an Alliance, which is its guild feature. A hundred players is the maximum cap for an Alliance but there’s so much benefits for being in one. The one feature that’s extremely helpful is being able to ask for help. When constructing new buildings and research which increases real time duration the higher the rank, players can ask their Alliance for help. With the click of a button, every Alliance member that does so can reduce your queue times up to the allowed cap. It’s a neat way to reward players who play together. The gift system is also good – players who spend real money on packs will automatically trigger and Alliance-wide gift that all members can claim. So at least in Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming, being a whale isn’t selfish which is a good thing. And being a free player isn’t so bad if you find the right Alliance to join.

The Battle For The Iron Throne

While the gameplay is what you’d expect from a PvP empire game, the meta is a much fun prospect – the battle for the Iron Throne. Players in large alliances will wage war in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros every few days to take ownership of one Major City. These are the castles of the great houses in Game of Thrones like Winterfell, Storm’s End, The Eyrie and Sunspear. Capturing these major cities offers Alliance-wide buffs which is crucial for large warfare. Then, once every week, the capitol city King’s Landing opens up for battle and the Alliance that captures it and holds it, gets to claim the Iron Throne for even more goodies. It’s a simple meta gameplay feature that while isn’t original, is so much suited to a Game of Thrones game. The downside is that to participate in the meta, solo play is impossible. You must be in an active and growing Alliance to have a chance.

3D Mini-Game Battles

In between all that building, attacking other cities and resource management to take and hold King’s Landing, there’s mini-battles that players can take part in using the Weirwood Tree and the Training ground. The former is a PvE tower defense style 3D battle game that pits your Commanders against enemy ones. Completing a stage will award you with stars based on your performance, and you get to move on to the next chapter. The battles themselves are short, and can be played manually which is fun – you get to use your Commander’s skills to turn the tide of the battle. Otherwise, you can also leave them automated to varying degrees of success. It’s a nice change of pace that’s actually beneficial in the long run as your Commanders can gain XP, equipment and more that can passively boost your city’s output in combat or elsewhere. The Training Grounds on the other hand is PvP for Commanders. You pick your best 6 to go up against your enemy’s automated best 6 and winning puts your team higher up in the rankings. This also grands you Diamonds – premium in-game currency – so there’s a real incentive to get good at it.

Game of Thrones Authenticity

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones and worship the TV show, you’ll appreciate just how much the game does to make you feel at home. For starters, the Commander characters are all based on the series. Players can collect, level up and fight with folks like Jon Snow, Robb Stark, Cercei Lannister and more. The art-work and such is also very accurate, so it’s pleasant to look at if not use them in combat. The in-game music is also taken directly from the show’s OST so authenticity flows nicely. Where the game falls short is having any sort of narrative structure or lore that resembles the series. The good news is that doesn’t matter or isn’t required for a strategy game like this where PvP is the only thing that matters.

Some really excellent news is emerging from ArenaNet and Guild Wars 2 today. After suffering probably its worst setback in years with the layoffs of a large portion of its workforce, the studio is bouncing back. The MMORPG has just announced its short and long term plans ahead to assure players that good things are indeed coming to Guild Wars 2. Among them are much anticipated updates, while others are being revealed for the first time. Here’s what you need to know and be hyped about.

Four Content Teams, Consistent Updates

Much have been made about the recent layoffs at ArenaNet, but it appears the studio is bouncing back to address concerns. The development team is restructuring into four fully staffed content teams with additional teams dedicated to supporting the core game. This includes areas such as Skills and Balance, Rewards, WvW and sPvP. Content teams will have more flexibility to decide what makes sense for a given release—for example, focusing on expanding the boundaries and content of an existing map if that would provide a better experience than creating a new one. Ultimately, this will mean a relatively steady release of new content that will allow Guild Wars 2 to continue telling the story of Tyria in exciting new ways.

Near Future Plans Includes Episode 6 of Living World Season 4

It has been sometime since the release of Guild Wars 2’s last episode for its Living World Season 4. The dry spell in between hasn’t offered players much to do, say for the returning festivals and the recent release of the Warclaw WvW mount that brought back some much needed life into that game mode. The good news now is that the team are wrapping up Episode 6, so we know the story continues. How will the Commander and the squad cope with the loss of Aurene? What happens next with the saga involving the Elder Dragon that destroyed our hope? All these questions need answering in Episode 6. Additionally, more polish is being done to the final encounter in the next raid which continues the story of Qadim. This will arrive after Episode 6.

The Distant Future

Ultimately it’s what is coming down the line -hopefully this year – is what’s exciting players the most. Here’s a snippet of all that’s being planned for release, assuming the content teams are on schedule:

We also have our sights set on a few features that have already been in development for some time. Please understand that these are all works in progress, so details can change between here and the final version, and we don’t have a timeline for the release of any of these. These features will ship when they are ready.

  • The rune and sigil salvaging release last year was in anticipation of releasing legendary runes and sigils—the final components of legendary core equipment.
  • Over the past few months, astute players have been noticing a trend of updates and improvements to how our skill-slotting system works and have accurately speculated that the long-requested feature of build templates is in the works.
  • We’d like to increase the max cooking level from 400 to 500. This crafting profession needs a refresh to make lower-tier foods important to the ecosystem and help reinvigorate various resources throughout the game.
  • We’ve mentioned in the past how important world restructuring is to our WvW initiatives, and that hasn’t changed. While the Programming Team is focused on this initiative, the team is also focusing on smaller updates that can temporarily change the game mode, like the No Downed State Week we’ve done in the past. We’re also talking about different types of reward structures for events.
  • Swiss tournament support is the next major feature the sPvP team is working on. This feature will be utilized by our structured tournaments moving forward.
