Black Desert’s global scale is evident from its revenue of nearly $2 billion since launching in 2014. 40% of revenue comes from North America and the European continent, with 26% coming out of Korea, and the remaining 34% spread across other Asian countries including Japan and Thailand.

Black Desert is bigger than the Sahara:

The world of Black Desert has widened with the launching of Xbox One, PlayStation4, and mobile versions. The global presence of both the game and the company has continued to expand across the years, launching on PC in 2014, then coming to consoles in 2019. Inside the game, the world of Black Desert is continually expanding, with various expansions and new content over the last year including new classes, regions, bosses and more. More than 40 million players have played Black Desert across all platforms.

Shadow Arena

Since launching into early access in May of 2020, Shadow Arena, an action-packed PvP that takes place in the Black Desert universe has expanded alongside its sister game.

Other Games & Titles

In 2018, Pearl Abyss acquired CCP Games, an Icelandic video game developer known for developing and publishing a massive sci-fi MMO EVE Online. Since the acquisition, CCP has continued to expand EVE Online with their “EVE in Quadrants” initiative. A trailer for Plan 8, the first shooting game from Pearl Abyss, will be released at Pearl Abyss Connect. The game’s production is led by Seung-ki Lee, former Environment Art Director of Black Desert Online and Black Desert Mobile. This is an exosuit MMO shooter game that will have its own sci-fi world and storylines, and it’s akin to something like a Destiny 2 or Anthem rather than a traditional team-based shooter like Overwatch, which is interesting for the Korean market, as data shows that folks in the east prefers that latter.

DokeV

DokeV is a collectible MMORPG for all ages. DokeV is led by Sang-young Kim, former Animation Director of Black Desert Online, and Suh Won Choi, former Game Design Director of Black Desert Online. This is an MMORPG that involves catching unique creatures that grow and gain powers from people’s dreams. This is an open world MMO made for all ages with a beta test planned in 2020.

In a war for survival, three tribes will fight for control of the Pywell continent. Crimson Desert has been produced since 2018 by Jason Jung, former Game Design Director of RYL Online. Based on the Black Desert universe, Shadow Arena pits players against each other in a massive battlefield where they must fight using powerful magic and weapons to survive until the very end. During the match, players can also defeat fearsome monsters to collect valuable items and gain advantages to become the last hero standing. 

Starting today, players choose between 10 Heroes, including the new Hero Venslar. Venslar brings a brand-new combat style to the battlefield, featuring a balanced kit with both offensive and defensive skills. This new Hero will allow players to experience strategic gameplay by choosing whether to focus on being on the attack or the defense.  

Various new features and content are also available throughout the Early Access period. Multiple difficulty levels have been added to the AI Matches to create an environment that suits each player’s skills. Each Hero now has Ultimate Skill levels that will make one skill more powerful than the others. Moreover, in-game areas now have different characteristics in terms of monster types and levels.   

Furthermore, players can purchase Hero Skins that can be used to change the appearance of  the Heroes. Heroes will also be available for purchase, and the new in-game emotes that have been included will also add more personality to them. Other updates such as Daily Quests, Challenges, the Ancient Weapon Puturum, and the Suspicious Cauldron will help players looking to level up their Heroes.

“Shadow Arena is a standalone game that lets our fans experience the Black Desert universe like never before,” said Kwang Sam Kim, the lead producer of Shadow Arena. “During the Early Access period, we’ll continue to listen closely to player feedback and perfect the game for our official launch.”

Following Pearl Abyss’ acquisition of CCP Games in November 2018, the Icelandic developer has continued to operate its own titles as an independent entity with studios in Reykjavík, London and Shanghai. Capitalizing on their common focus on MMO game development and live services for global audiences, the two companies are sharing knowledge on game development and strategy across the board while exploring ways to create synergy. Pearl Abyss and CCP Games recently announced their first project together, the introduction of Korean localization into EVE Online in Q4 2019.
