gamigo and Dynamight Studios are pleased to announce the closed beta for Fractured Online is now available.

The closed beta phase of Fractured Online welcomes players, both new and old, to explore the new continent of Aerhen, where Humans largely preside and unique biomes will push players’ survival instincts to the max. The mountains are cold and unforgiving; the volcanic region is hot and oppressive; sudden torrential downpours plague the steppe biome. The only redeeming quality is the tundra region as it has fewer weather anomalies. Unfortunately, there are plenty of creatures to worry about. Jotunns, Mammoths, Arctic Wolves, and various Elementals are just some of the ferocious fauna players will come across when they visit this new land.

In addition to exploring a new region filled with obstacles to overcome, players will be able to take part in several events across multiple channels – including social media, Discord, and in-game – during their time with the closed beta. More details on these events will be revealed soon.

“Today marks a very important time in Fractured Online’s history,” says Jacopo Gallelli, Co-Founder and CEO at Dynamight Studios. “As of this moment, anyone can jump into the game at any time to begin their quest for knowledge and overcome threats through their own skill and cleverness, not equipment or level. Venture into legendary travels as a solitary hero or start a settlement with your guild and grow into the next empire. Take part in a robust player-driven economy, craft items for personal use or for trade, and fight off various monsters or other players in PvE/PvP combat. What players do in game is completely up to them as they can either live an honest life as a shepherd, farmer, or crafter, or choose a more violent path of hunting and scavenging.”

Players interested in participating in the closed beta of Fractured Online can purchase a discounted copy of the game via the official Glyph store at https://fracturedonline.com/store/#pack. Not only will players gain access to its closed beta, but they’ll also receive unique in-game items, credits and other limited content.

When it comes to MMORPGs, free to play has never been more prevalent in the genre. There’s dozens upon dozens of free entry MMO games that allows you to jump into the world and creep toward the end-game without spending too much. Of course, for most games, there’s always a catch. Things like additional content in DLCs, Expansions and of course micro-transaction exists. So in a way, there’s no completely free game out there. However, on a tight budget, there’s still some solid titles out there that will offer you tons of fun for the free entry. Here’s our picks for the best MMORPGs to play if you’re not keen on spending money.

1. Star Wars: The Old Republic

There was a period in time that SWTOR wasn’t actually considered free to play friendly at all. Most saw BioWare’s monetization of the game as greedy, and with a massive fan base like Star Wars, corporations would obviously want to cash in on that. Today, SWTOR has dialed back on some of its free to play restrictions, letting you play all the base game’s class stories for free up to level 50. If you need a quick Star Wars fix, these class stories are absolutely worth it, and you can even forget the later stuff. Nothing beats the vanilla experience anyway. Just keep in mind, this will mostly be a single player experience which is tragic for one of the biggest budget MMORPGs of the modern era.

2. Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 started out has a buy to play MMORPG, and now has dropped its entry free entirely. You can in-fact, play the vanilla game all the way up until the still current level cap of 80. There’s almost no world-content restrictions, feel free to take part in a wide variety of activities. These include PvP, world boss events, fractals and of course, dungeons. The expansions so far offers new maps, the Living World Stories and elite class specializations, so you’ll have to pay for those if you want them. Otherwise, Guild Wars 2 offers probably the most solid amount of content for a free to play MMORPG on the market at the moment. You’ll still have restrictions like auction house limits and chat limitations, but if you can see pass that, it’s a great game to spend some time in.

3. Albion Online

For players looking for a more sandbox experience, Albion Online is perhaps your ideal choice. With inspiration drawn from games like RuneScape, Ultima and more, Albion Online let’s you play whatever you want to play, and be whoever you want to be, literally. The classless system allows you to build toward your favorite MMO fantasy archetype, and its world is true-sandbox – you’ll craft, build and kill other players to survive. If you die in a danger zone, you lose the gear that’s on you, so yes, full loot on death. It has an active Guild vs. Guild scene because territory warfare is a big deal in Albion. There is a premium subscription you can opt in for that awards bonus Fame which helps with crafting and skill progression, but for tight-budget players, who cares? You can still join a Guild, get help, and be competitive.

4. Lost Ark

If Korean MMORPGs are what you’re after, then this MMORPG needs no introduction. Since its Western release back in February 2022, Lost Ark is taking the world by storm, setting Steam records left and right, and for good reason. With an excellent ARPG combat system and gameplay loop accompanied by all the trappings of a classic Korean MMO, Lost Ark delivers on every front and it’s addictive. Players can pursue all manner of PvE activities from raids, to housing and collection, or dabble into pulsating PvP matches, there’s something for everyone in Lost Ark, which is is amazing for a free to play MMORPG.

5. Neverwinter

This one’s a little controversial, but Neverwinter makes the list for a few reasons. Based on the Dungeons and Dragons setting, Neverwinter launched in 2013, and is still going strong today. The game does a decent job at incorporating what’s new in the D&D universe into the MMORPG, be it new rulesets, races and campaigns. The combat system is pretty fun, as are the dungeons and other group content. It is free to play with no pay walls stopping you from getting to the level cap, or even to the new and latest expansions and content. However, it’s also home to one of the most heavy-handed cash shops in-game for a Western title. Expect to see dozens of different loot-box keys for the twice as many boxes you’ll pick up in-game. There will be times you’ll feel like you can’t compete in-game if you don’t spend the money (PvP), but PvE is perfectly playable for anyone on a tight budget.

Time to stage a daring prison break as Sea of Thieves’ second story-driven Adventure, ‘Forts of the Forgotten’, goes live! Rally your crew, rendezvous with Belle and set sail for the Sea Forts pulled through from the Sea of the Damned by Captain Flameheart. Expect heavy resistance from a Phantom phalanx as you battle through these ghostly fortifications to rescue the missing inhabitants of Golden Sands Outpost!

Sea of Thieves’ plans for 2022, including this suite of new Adventures designed to let players take part in an ever-evolving story within the world, were laid out in our Preview Event earlier this year. As with the first Adventure, ‘Shrouded Islands’, we offered a look at the cinematic trailer for ‘Forts of the Forgotten’ ahead of time, teeing up the action that’s set to unfold over the course of this two-week in-game event.

During the events of ‘Shrouded Islands’, the defeat of the Soulflame Captains weakened the barrier between the living world and the Sea of the Damned, allowing Flameheart to summon Sea Forts – initially insubstantial, now very real – into the Sea of Thieves. Meanwhile, despite the sinister fog around the islands starting to recede, Golden Sands Outpost still lies in ruin. Luckily, Belle has a lead on the location of its inhabitants, but it’ll take some brave crews to set them free…

If you want a full breakdown of the state of play before jumping into ‘Forts of the Forgotten’, don’t forget that we have a dedicated story primer on the Sea of Thieves website – ideal for those who may have missed out on taking part in ‘Shrouded Islands’! Each Adventure will be preceded by one of these primers, so you’ll always have a way to brush up on the story so far before heading out on your mission.

Ready for action? Raise your anchor and assail the ‘Forts of the Forgotten’ today! Expect more exciting Adventures throughout 2022, and keep your eye on the horizon for Legend of the Veil – the story-focused, Pirate Legend-exclusive Voyage arriving later in Season Six!

For more information on the latest Sea of Thieves update, including full release notes, visit the Sea of Thieves website. This update is available for free to all Sea of Thieves players who have bought the game on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 PC or via Steam, or players who have access to it with Xbox Game Pass. Simply download and install the latest Sea of Thieves update to get access.

Paradox Interactive this past week has revealed Overlord, an upcoming expansion for Stellaris. Overlord will grant players access to new features centered around more intricate management of their intergalactic empires, from specialized vassals to powerful new megastructures. Players can use these new features to bring order and glory to the galaxy – or bring it to its knees. Overlord will be available for Stellaris players on all PC platforms soon, and will launch alongside the free 3.4 “Cepheus” update to Stellaris with new content and adjustments for all players, as part of the continued effort by the Custodian team to provide continuous improvements to Stellaris. Check out the trailer below.

In Overlord, ambitious leaders will unlock a new level of empire management and realize their grand designs for the universe. Specialized vassal roles will allow players to either elevate the planets within their realms to new heights of glory, or keep them in line and under control. New enclaves will present unique opportunities and challenges, and a selection of new megastructures will offer ways to project power further and faster. Five new Origins, new music, and more will be included when Overlord launches later this year.

“The stories our players have told through the last six years of Stellaris never fail to amaze us,” said Stephen Muray, Game Director of Stellaris at Paradox Development Studio. “We’ve seen empires rise and fall, unite and destroy, and clash overtly or covertly with their galactic neighbors. With Overlord, we want to give players more options and opportunities to realize their own ‘space operas,’ build a universe full of grand houses or squabbling vassals, and see how long they can hold power over what they’ve created. Look for more details on what it means to be a galactic Overlord very soon!”

As the birds begin chirping and the buds start blooming, a new Season springs into life for Sea of Thieves! Along with an offering of brand new Seasonal rewards, Season Six is all about expanding Sea of Thieves’ narrative through time-limited Adventures, while still giving you opportunities to forge your own epic tales of derring-do – with Sea Forts and the new Pirate Legend-exclusive Voyage, Legend of the Veil. If you can’t wait to write the next chapter in your pirate’s memoir of high-seas adventure, Season Six is now available as a free update for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 PC and Steam.

Like past Seasons, Season Six and its 100 levels of rewards are free to all Sea of Thieves players, with cosmetics and other goodies earnable as you build Renown by going about your pirate business. If you want to spice up your Seasonal climb to Level 100 with more premium items not yet available anywhere else, you can purchase the optional Season Six Plunder Pass! Find out more with the Seasons Explained and Plunder Pass Explained articles.

Smash and Grab

Brought forth from the Sea of the Damned by the machinations of Captain Flameheart, six Phantom-filled Sea Forts have now appeared around the Sea of Thieves for brave pirates to plunder. With a focus on combat and loot to be liberated, Sea Forts provide a satisfying on-demand experience for battle-hungry sailors or those who may not have time for a longer Voyage. Enter a Fort, cut down its spectral defenders, scour every nook and cranny for hidden riches, and defeat the Sea Fort Captain to gain the key to the Treasury.

Once a Sea Fort is cleared, you can make the most of its home comforts – including the well-stocked Homestead room with chairs and a blazing fire to put your feet up and share a well-earned grog with your crew. Just be prepared to defend your little sanctuary from other crews who might want it for themselves!

Piercing the Veil

Narrative-driven Adventures will continue throughout Season Six and beyond, keeping the Sea of Thieves world and lore in constant motion. Adventure 2, ‘Forts of the Forgotten’, will soon pick up the thread from the recently concluded ‘Shrouded Islands’. But another story-centric feature is also set to make its mark later in Season Six. Legend of the Veil, a new Voyage exclusive to Pirate Legends, will send you out hunting for lost Veil Stones across dramatic new locations and facing an ever-changing series of challenges. From haunted islands and shipwreck graveyards to a climactic naval battle against a Ghost Garrison, this is a Voyage you don’t want to miss!

To complement this Legendary content, the maximum rank achievable with the Athena’s Fortune Trading Company will be raised from 20 to 30. With a host of new cosmetics, Commendations and achievements on offer, get ready to continue your climb to the top in Season Six!

Pirate Emporium Plunder

For pirates keen to boost their Seasonal reward pool, the Season Six Plunder Pass is headlined by the complete set of items making up the brand new Spring Blossom ship set, alongside the evolving Forest’s Blessing costume which transforms as you climb the Season’s 100 levels. As always, Plunder Pass items are temporary exclusives before heading to the Pirate Emporium sometime in the future.

Other standout selections new to the Pirate Emporium in March are the loud and proud Islehopper Outlaw ship set with matching costume, weapons and even a banjo – perfect for the wild-hearted hellraisers, rabble-rousers and ruffians of the seas. Or if you can’t help striking a pose at a moment’s notice, style it out with the Bunch of Posers Emote Bundle. While you’re browsing the Emporium’s new wares, remember to pick up this month’s free emote too!

Cross platform sandbox MMORPG Albion Online has announced the start of its next Guild Season, which also happens to be the game’s milestone fifteenth, on March 5th. The season will begin with increased Might and Favor, updated Might Level progression, an updated Crystal League map with hugely increased rewards, and more. Read on for details, or for the complete Season 15 schedule, click here.

To further reward players and guilds who partake in riskier activities, the overall Might and Favor earned in various categories has been greatly increased. Here are a few examples:

  • Gathering/Fishing in the Outlands and Roads of Avalon: +30%
  • PvE in the Outlands and Roads of Avalon: +25%
  • Winning in Corrupted Dungeons: +20%

Additionally, the threshold for early Might Levels has been lowered for a wide range of activities available at all times. And as these thresholds now increase faster with higher levels, reaching the highest levels requires significantly more Might for the same Season Point output, ensuring the competition remains intense at the higher levels of guild warfare.

Crystal League rewards for both 5v5 and 20v20 have been improved significantly, with massively increased Silver as well as big Fame increases at nearly all levels. Together with the new map, we hope this will incentivize more players to try out the Crystal League and experience thrilling PvP matches.

Players who gain enough Might will receive unique season-specific Avatar Sets, as well as battle mounts and 90-day Fame Buffs. Might can be gathered for a huge range of PvP-adjacent activities in the Conqueror’s Challenge, which was introduced in Season 14 as a way for guilds of all sizes – as well as players who are not in guilds – to earn rewards without requiring passive territory control. And as always, there are additional bracket rewards for guilds who reach at least Iron Rank, and the grand prize of a permanent statue in Conquerors’ Hall for the season’s number one guild.

When it comes to MMORPGs, free to play has never been more prevalent in the genre. There’s dozens upon dozens of free entry MMO games that allows you to jump into the world and creep toward the end-game without spending too much. Of course, for most games, there’s always a catch. 4. ELYON Ascent Infinite Realm

If Korean MMORPGs are what you’re after, the choices are almost endless. We settled on Bluehole and Kakao’s latest MMORPG to hit the West, Eyon. Formerly known as Ascent: Infinite Realm, Elyon is a theme park MMO that will tick all your boxes if you were a fan of games like AION, TERA and more. The game’s recent overhaul before launch has seen it introduce a more robust and dynamic action combat system, alongside revamping the narrative journey to include better story quests, dungeons and leveling. PvP is no pushover either, with the game’s two faction system that encourages open world PvP in contested maps. The biggest pro is that the game is completely free to play, and you can jump in right now.

5. Neverwinter

This one’s a little controversial, but Neverwinter makes the list for a few reasons. Based on the Dungeons and Dragons setting, Neverwinter launched in 2013, and is still going strong today. Old School RuneScape’s iconic God Wars Dungeon concludes today with the return of monstrous group boss Nex: The Fifth General.  The fearsome boss was originally released in January 2011, and 11 years later Old School RuneScape brings players a whole new encounter with this ancient adversary of the Second Age.

Dwelling in the Ancient Prison beneath the God Wars Dungeon, Nex can only be accessed once players have completed the Desert Treasure quest and a miniquest to unlock the Frozen Door. This iced-up access point has existed since the Dungeon was launched but has remained sealed, until now! Once inside the Prison, players must crush through a formidable army before reaching Nex herself.

The long-awaited PVM expansion can be battled in groups of up to 80, with the best players challenging themselves to take on Nex in smaller teams. Defeating Nex gives players the chance to obtain some highly valuable rewards, including Ancient Godsword, Zaryte crossbow, the iconic Torva armour set, and more. Every player who takes part in the fight has a chance of obtaining a unique item, with higher performing players bagging more loot.

All new content introduced to Old School RuneScape must have the backing of 75% of the community. Nex: The Fifth General was put to a player poll, and it passed attracting more than 57,000 votes with 90% approving the boss.

This is members-only content, become a member now at www.oldschool.runescape.com to start preparing for a climactic showdown in the new year. In addition, Nex will also be featured in the highly anticipated Leagues III, launching on January 19th.

CCP Games and BBC Studios have joined forces for EVE Online x Doctor Who, an original crossover event between the beloved action-adventure series Doctor Who and the free-to-play deep space-faring MMO EVE Online. Universes will collide as Capsuleers and Whovians face the Daleks together in massive space battles in EVE Online x Doctor Who starting 13 January until 1 February.

EVE Online is a free-to-play, community-driven spaceship MMO game where players can choose their own path among the stars from countless options, developed by CCP Games in Reykjavik. The game first launched in 2003 and has since gained recognition for its scale, complexity, and the world record-breaking exploits of its online community. EVE Online is one of the most critically acclaimed MMORPG intellectual properties (IPs) in time and space, and one of the most extensive works of science fiction in the world.

“2022 will be off to an (inter)stellar start with EVE Online x Doctor Who,” said Bergur Finnbogason, EVE Online’s Creative Director. “We are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in EVE Online. Collaborating with BBC Studios gives us the opportunity to pay homage to an iconic series that has inspired us at CCP. We hope you’ll join us in New Eden on January 13 to see what happens when galaxies collide!”

“EVE Online x Doctor Who not only brings two iconic universes together, but also the passionate Whovians with the just-as-passionate pilots of New Eden,” said Kevin Jorge, Senior Producer at BBC Studios, “By bringing the fanbases together, the already massive battles of EVE Online are sure to become even more explosive. Only time will tell if New Eden’s fiercest pilots have what it takes to challenge the might of the Daleks.”

EVE Online x Doctor Who introduces new, Gallifrey-themed space where players will search for artifacts from Doctor Who’s Great Time War. After 18 years of being the battlefield for PvP combat, RuneScape today says goodbye to its iconic Duel Arena, which first arrived back in 2004, and is set to welcome heroes to Het’s Oasis, which will introduce an all-new landscape, new skilling methods and two new miniquests to experience.

Kicking off today with the Oasis Restoration, the heroes of RuneScape will be tasked with the transformation of the Duel Arena following a cataclysmic earthquake that has destroyed the area. Heroes will need to work together to turn the ruins of the arena from a bloodthirsty fighting pit, where heroes have long staked their wealth in one-on-one matches, to a tranquil oasis. Heroes will work together to rebuild the area by taking part in daily tasks with rewards based not only on their own progress, but on the progress of the whole community.

Heroes who participate in the rejuvenation of the former arena’s lands will receive exclusive event rewards, including a new crocodile pet, a new title, desert-themed cosmetic armour as well as the comfy and resilient ‘Gators’ footwear.

Following the two-week event, the reformed arena will be known as Het’s Oasis – an area of learning and exploration with new skill-related content for those looking to boost their Agility, Hunter and Farming skills. Heroes will also assist the God of Death in two Eye of Het miniquests as they delve into Het’s Tomb in search of a powerful object that will aid the young gods as part of the Elder God Wars saga.

The Oasis Restoration is live today in RuneScape on PC, Steam, iOS, and Android, complete with cross-platform progression and play on PC and mobile.
