Event Overview

Streaming to Twitch and YouTube, WitcherCon was aired over two separate streams containing many fun and eventful panels focused around different aspects of the world of The Witcher — as well as content unique to each stream. Some of the highlights from the event include: Geralt of T-Rivia — where key creators from The Witcher series of games and The Witcher Netflix series competed to test their knowledge in a Witcher-universe themed quiz. Then, in Memories From the Path, developers from CD PROJEKT RED discussed how the digital stories of the games have been brought to life over the years, before revisiting old memories together and reminiscing about the creation of the games.

New Manga

CD PROJEKT RED also put the spotlight on their expanded Witcher universe in The Witcher: Beyond Video Games — at the heart of which was the reveal of the upcoming comic book The Witcher: Ronin. The comic is stylized in the manga form, and tells an ancient-Japanese-inspired tale which casts Geralt as a monster-slaying Ronin on the hunt of the mythical Yuki Onna — the Lady of Snow. A special hardback collector’s edition of The Witcher: Ronin will be coming soon to Kickstarter.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer AR Game

Spokko, member of the CD PROJEKT family, was also at WitcherCon to present new footage from their location-based AR RPG The Witcher: Monster Slayer. Coming to iOS and Android for free on July 21st, the game tasks players with becoming a witcher themselves, stepping out into familiar surroundings transformed into a dark fantasy realm to hunt down bloodthirsty beasts lurking nearby.

Netflix Season 2 News

What’s more, in addition to hosting panels featuring the cast of The Witcher Netflix series at WitcherCon, Netflix also provided sneak peeks and updates regarding the second season of its hugely popular series, and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf anime. As well as fresh looks at both, the release dates for these projects were also revealed during the event, with Season 2 coming on December 17th, and the anime arriving August 23rd.

WitcherCon is also not the only example of CD PROJEKT RED and Netflix’s collaboration. Later in 2021, the next-gen edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, and the game will also include bonus items inspired by the Netflix series. The next-gen upgrade for the game will be free for owners of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Nintendo Switch is the most sold console of 2018, officially beating Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. It’s a huge feat, and for good reason. The Switch is an awesome and capable console featuring a ton of great games in its roster already. Besides the Nintendo exclusives like the Mario games, Legend of Zelda and SmashBros, third party publishers have also been contributing some immense titles. It started with the likes of Doom and Skyrim, and now all the big players have arrived. Fortnite, Warframe and even the Civilization franchise are on the Nintendo Switch. What does this mean? It means the Switch has the potential to bring more great games to the roster, and here are our top 5 most wanted games on the Nintendo Switch for 2019.

5. The Sims 4

The Nintendo Switch has some great variety of games across all genres. One of the most popular ones feature simulation. Think Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon. But it lacks the big human simulator which only The Sims franchise can provide. The Sims 4 would be fantastic to have for a couple of reasons. Chiefly, with all the expansions and packs out for it currently, it is the most completely Sims experience to date. And being able to take that portability fun with you anywhere will be a huge plus. The game play port will also transition nicely thanks to the consoles touch screen features, which will be needed as the UI in the Sims 4 can get cluttered with information. But of course, the easy fix is just to dock it and play in TV mode instead.

4. Pillars of Eternity

But what about old school isometric RPGs? The genre has seen a tremendous resurgence in recent years thanks to the success of games like Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny. Playing these games on the PC brings back a ton of memories for those of us who spent hours in Baldur’s Gate. An isometric party turn-based RPG on the Switch isn’t something new, and the system already has a great selection of indie games that offers this such as Darkest Dungeon. But in terms of a proper RPG story-driven game, Pillars of Eternity would be a massive hit for RPG fans on the console.

3. Hearthstone

Dear Blizzard, thanks for Diablo III on Nintendo Switch, but can we please have Hearthstone next? A year a go we said D3 would break boundaries if it arrived as there aren’t many top down hack and slash games of quality on the console. Blizzard answered the call and released the Diablo III Eternal Collection which ended up being a best seller. Next, Hearthstone will definitely dominate the Switch e-shop for a few reasons. Firstly, it’ll be the best card-game on the console, it’s free, it’s easy to play, and the Switch’s touch screen and controllers will make gameplay a breeze especially for pick up and go play. Just thing about it, Hearthstone on the Switch will be hard to put down.

2. XCOM 1 and 2

At E3 2018, Microsoft announced Gear Tactics: a squad turn-based strategy game set in the world of Gears of War. This aims to provide Gears fans with a different experience, but also to plug a gap that currently exists on the e-Shop – the lack of big named strategy games. When it comes to the ultimate nail-biting turn-based experience, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2 comes to mind. Either one of these games on the console will be a huge win for strategy fans every where. The first game is more than likely to get a port though, as XCOM: EU is already out for mobile devices on iOS and Android.

1. The Witcher Series

And finally, we would pay top dollar to see another massive open world RPG game franchise on the Switch to stand along side Breath of the Wild and Skyrim. CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher franchise will satisfy us greatly. Having Geralt on a portable console to adventure anytime and anywhere will be a blessing. There’s just so much story content and monster hunting to do in the world that The Witcher will  be one of those games you’ll just continuously play all the time. And having seen how open world RPGs can work on the console, there’s nothing stopping the developers from making it happen, accept Cyberpunk 2077, which is the new game from the studio that is probably already taking up time and resources.

Which games would you like to see come to the Nintendo Switch?

We get it, some folks hate these discussions that blur the line between single player RPGs and MMORPGs. But hey, we’re bias towards the MMO genre, so deal with it. Here are five of our favorite RPGs that we think would be kick-ass as massive multiplayer online games.

5. Dark Souls

If you really are a sucker for hard games and dying often is more of a stepping stone rather than a sign of defeat, then Dark Souls is the perfect game for you. Dark Souls is the epitome of RPG games that provides brutal challenge for players, most noticeably in the game’s combat.

Even the most humble of trash mobs in Dark Souls can wipe the floor clean with your blood. Every move you make becomes crucial to winning the fight. While that may sound terrifying, the feeling of accomplishment after a successful boss fight is euphoric. And that’s an experience that Dark Souls can magnificently provide. I think it would be an awesome MMORPG. The genre has become a festering ground for games that are too easy. I’d love to see a Dark Souls MMO that will absolutely destroy players who aren’t prepared for a fight. The game has a decent story and that could translate very well into main and side quests for an MMORPG.

4. Deus EX

Deus EX as a franchise has quite a large following for bold story telling, memorable characters and of course the setting. Oh my the setting is to die for. What other game can conjure a futuristic dystopian cyberpunk world that’s actually a marvel to a part in? It’s because of games like Deus that Cyberpunk 2077 are a thing. Why would this world and setting be awesome for full 3D MMORPG world?

For many reasons, but the main one is that there’s so much more stories left to tell. And we’d love to see a Deus MMO take the SWTOR or Guild Wars 2 approach to story telling. NPCs that are voiced, or organic world events that tell the story as well. It would bring players so much closer to the lore and setting.

3. Fallout

Bethesda’s upcoming Fallout 76 looks like it will be a precursor to something bigger, possibly an MMO experiment. We know from E3 2018 that the new game will be always online with multiplayer element. While that doesn’t make it an MMORPG outright, we believe that a proper Fallout MMORPG would be great. Think about that for a second. Massive, huge post apocalyptic world, where classless players survive either together or against each other in a sandbox environment as opposed to the theme park shtick. It may just work, but don’t expect to see it ever. Todd Howard is not a big fan of MMORPGs.

2. Dragon Age

Bioware’s Dragon Age series needs no introduction. Dragon Age is considered to be one of the best fantasy RPG game franchise of all time. The world of Thedas is rich with lore and characters, and fans would love to explore the narrative in an online world. A Dragon Age MMORPG would be the ideal game for fans of the series to further immerse themselves in Bioware stories.

The challenge however, is reflecting which combat system would be appropriate for the MMO. Dragon Age Origins was known for its top-down tactical combat while DA2 introduced a fluid action combat system. The latest entry in 2014 Inquisition, tried to combine the two systems to varying degrees of success. The MMORPG would have to do the same, but will most likely utilize the action combat over the tactical one for logical reasons. But all things considered, I strongly believe that Dragon Age the MMO will be a huge success.

1. The Witcher

Of course, top of our bucket list has to be The Witcher franchise. The game’s immersive open world, story and characters are primary reasons why many love the series, but it does also offer some memorable gameplay challenges. I think many of us would love to see a Witcher MMORPG, where players can further explore the world and characters.

I’d like to think that the MMO would also have a higher difficulty curve. This of course, comes from the game’s clever use of battle preparation. Jumping into a fight with a new monster that you know nothing about could be punishing, as each monster has unique strengths and weaknesses that players must find out about, and prepare accordingly via concocting and consuming potions.
Without them, the hardest monsters in the game will put you six feet under and you’ll remain there, unless you decide to do some homework. If the MMO can capture that battle preparation feeling, especially in group dungeons, I think it would be a hit.

The Nintendo Switch is turning out to be a neat little portable console, featuring a ton of great games in its roster already. Besides the Nintendo exclusives like the Mario games, Legend of Zelda and SmashBros, third party publishers have also been contributing some immense titles. Take for example, Bethesda. The Switch received a huge boost when Skyrim was announced as the first open world RPG to be on the console, and it plays great. Naysayers point out validly that TES V is a 7 year old game, but now we’ve got 2016’s Doom and the new Wolfenstein game on it too. What does this mean? It means the Switch has the potential to bring more great games to the roster, and here are our top 5 most wanted games on the Nintendo Switch.

5. The Sims 4

The Nintendo Switch has some great variety of games across all genres. One of the most popular ones feature simulation. Think Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon. Alternatively: Any theme park simulator

But what about old school isometric RPGs? The genre has seen a tremendous resurgence in recent years thanks to the success of games like Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny. Playing these games on the PC brings back a ton of memories for those of us who spent hours in Baldur’s Gate. Alternatively: Divinity: Original Sin

3. Diablo 3

Dear Blizzard, do not be a spoiled sport and please jump onto the Swtich train, thank you. With major developers and publishers like Bethesda and Ubisoft already on board, it would be nice to see Blizzard join in and take it to the next level. Diablo 3 will probably be the ultimate ARPG that would elevate the Switch experience. The game play is simple enough to handle, and the proof is in the PS4/Xbox pudding. It’s already there, so it definitely can happen, it’s just a matter of when. The key addition if it comes however, will be cross play functionality.

Alternatively: Path of Exile, Grim Dawn

2. XCOM 1 and 2

At E3 2018, Microsoft announced Gear Tactics: a squad turn-based strategy game set in the world of Gears of War. We all have our favorite RPG franchises and games. They offer some of the best solo gaming experiences, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the game via the world and stories. But have you ever stop to think about the possibility of seeing these games as MMORPGs?

When it comes to popular RPG franchises, it’s not a foreign prospect. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) was a brilliant single player RPG game. The sequel proved even better, and years later it was announced that an MMORPG would continue the story. Thus, Star Wars: The Old Republic was born, featuring brilliantly written quests and companions, worthy of a single player game. But Star Wars aside, what other game franchises would make epic MMOs? Here are my top three picks.

Dragon Age

Bioware’s Dragon Age series needs no introduction. Dragon Age is considered to be one of the best fantasy RPG game franchise of all time.
