Keep in mind, both raids must be attuned to, AKA requirements to enter must be met. For Black Temple, players must travel to Shadowmoon Valley and seek out Anchorite Ceyla at the Altar of Sha’tar (for the Aldor) or Arcanist Thelis at the Sanctum of the Stars (for the Scryers). Complete the following quests:

13. An Artifact From the Past
    • “An Artifact From the Past” requires entry into the Battle for Mount Hyjal raid. The attunement quest for that raid must be completed in order to gain entry to the Black Temple.

Completing “A Distraction for Akama” will award you the Medallion of Karabor, which allows its wearer entry into the Black Temple.

Nostalgia Is A Drug

The obvious answer is nostalgia. You can’t beat it, you can’t fight. In MMORPGs, we all have memories that are cherished – our first MMO, our first guild, the first time we experienced something, in some zone, or some raid. These memories over time creates a powerful longing to return to a time when the experience was pure. This is why older MMORPGs that create fresh start servers, or classic versions like World of Warcraft has done here will always be popular. On WoW Classic, it’s hard not to pass by folks in chat without hearing about how the good old times have returned. Now it’s just a matter of seeing how far nostalgia itself can carry Classic forward to a long, populated life.

The Difficulty

One of my favorite things about Classic, is the difficulty, solo. Right from the tutorial onward, everything about modern MMO questing systems in respects to the way you’re spoon fed information about where to go and what to do, disappears. If you’re not reading quests texts and paying attention to detail, things can become a little confusing especially if you’ve never played WoW before and assuming you’re not looking up guides and tutorials on the internet. I’m not doing the last one of course, I think that’s the best way to play Classic, because it makes you come out of your shell like in my case, I’ve had to interact more with other players around me which is refreshing.

The difficulty also encompasses the gameplay – yes it’s a dated game and that’s intentional. The combat’s slower, depending what you’re doing, you can’t pull more mobs at once like you would on the live version at around the same level, and all of that adds to this sense of danger, that yes, I could die very early on leveling my character if I’m not careful, or not managing my mana and pot use efficiently, and that’s somewhat exciting for a theme park MMORPG and what’s cool is that I felt that way so early on in Classic, and that’s missing from most modern MMORPGs, never mind the early levels, but in general and in large parts of the leveling experience. I’ve died a few times in Classic, and that actually made me happy because it teaches me to not make similar mistakes, and it sets a precedent of what to expect as you continue to level in harder areas with higher density of mobs.

The Community

The population is healthy across regions and realms, and while that may sound normal, anyone who’s playing on Classic at the moment will tell you, something’s different about this. There’s a different vibe in the air when it comes to the playerbase, and it’s not new but it’s certainly been missing from retail WoW and other modern MMORPG games today. It’s that closely knit MMORPG community feeling, where players rely on one another, interact more, and willingly or unwillingly help each other through the game’s content, that’s the key ingredient in all of this. This is what’s tugging at my nostalgia strings – not the Classic gameplay as I’ve never played it launch, but this – a community so in-tune with itself, the world and the adventures we’re sharing together. It’s positive, it’s infectious and it is what will keep players playing the content down the line.

Yes, there are negatives, yes there’s toxic here and there, but that’s being drowned out thanks to how awesome the community in general is. I’ve been helped by passer-by’s and folks just waiting at certain checkpoints to either group up for group quests or to just lend a hand, I’ve been given free stuff for no reason at all, and to return the favor and make myself feel a part of this, I’ve stood at Goldshire for quite a bit, throwing buffs to players coming to and fro, and it’s stuff like that which takes me way back to when I first started playing MMORPGs, when these huge shared online worlds felt alive not because of how much content or levels there is, but because of the playerbase that populates it and what they do.

Some of the new features players can expect on these new realms include:

• Faster Phase Unlocking: All six planned content phases will be condensed to a one-year timespan, with new phases unlocking every couple of months.
• Faster Leveling: To accommodate the quicker cadence of content releases, experience gains—specifically those awarded for quest completion—will be increased.
• Raid Boss Tuning: Bosses will be tuned slightly harder to match the increases in player power from the 1.12 patch tuning.
• Quality of Life Changes: Players can look forward to additional changes to raid encounters (such as disabling world buffs in raids), raid boss debuff changes, increased profession gathering nodes, and more.

To be eligible for the open beta, be sure to have the option to opt into WoW betas turned on, which can be found in your Battle.Net/Blizzard App profile.

Players selected to participate in the beta test will receive an email invitation directing them to download the beta client directly from the Battle.net desktop app.

If you’ve been selected to participate in the beta test, your Battle.net account will already be flagged for access.

• Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.
• Run the Battle.net desktop app—it may need to update itself if you haven’t run it recently. If you don’t have the app installed, get started here.
• Once Battle.net is installed and updated, select World of Warcraft from the list of games.
• In the Game Version drop-down menu above the Play button, choose the Burning Crusade (listed under In Development), then click Install.
• Allow installation to complete, click Play and select any of the available Test Servers.
• Create a new test character or copy over a character from your live WoW Classic account using the Copy Character button.
• Enter the game and test the content.

The new Hearthstone year will feature a new Core set of cards designed to shake up the game, and the introduction of the Classic format, which will let players craft decks and compete using the original Hearthstone cards as they were when the game launched in 2014.

• Also coinciding with the Year of the Gryphon is the first Hearthstone expansion of 2021, Forged in the Barrens, inspired by the iconic World of Warcraft^® locale where millions of adventurers began forging their legends—available for prepurchase now at www.playhearthstone.com.

• Later in the year, Blizzard will roll out Hearthstone Mercenaries, a single-player and competitive game mode in which players collect mighty characters from the Warcraft^® universe and level them up in tactical battles.

WoW: Chains of Domination and Burning Crusade Classic for WoW Classic

• For World of Warcraft, Blizzard announced Chains of Domination, the first major content update coming later this year for the recently released Shadowlands expansion, as well as an all-new charity pet program that will yield two separate pets—Bananas the monkey and Daisy the sloth—for all modern WoW^® players once donation goals are met. Blizzard also revealed Burning Crusade Classic, an authentic recreation of the acclaimed first World of Warcraft expansion—also coming later this year, and included in players’ existing World of Warcraft subscription at no additional cost.

Burning Crusade Classic builds on the epic foundation of World of Warcraft Classic, providing players with an opportunity to experience the next legendary chapter in the Warcraft saga. Through the launch and over the course of content updates to follow, the recreation will bring back the features of the 2007 original, including:

• The Shattered Realm of Outland: Traverse the treacherous crags and spires of Blade’s Edge Mountains, where even dragons fear to roam; hunt alongside the uncorrupted Mag’har orcs among the floating islands of Nagrand; battle demonic agents of the Legion in the shadow of the Black Temple; and much more.
• Two New Playable Races: Fight for the Horde as the blood elves, seeking a new source of the arcane power that once sustained them, or join the Alliance as the draenei, exiles from Outland in search of a new home.
• Gather at the Arena Gates: Assemble your most trusted allies and prove your PvP prowess in 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5 combat in Arenas such as the Ring of Trials and the Circle of Blood.
• Take Wing on Flying Mounts: Take flight in the chaotic skies of Netherstorm and soar over fel-touched Shadowmoon Valley with the introduction of flying mounts in Outland.
• Master Challenging Raids and Dungeons: Conquer 5-player dungeons set in the crystalline fortress of Tempest Keep and the Caverns of Time, where heroes bear witness to Azeroth’s past. Raid the haunted halls of 10-player Karazhan, and gear up over time for a climactic confrontation against Kil’jaeden in 25-player Sunwell Plateau.
• New Options for Heroes: Carve gems of power to socket into players’ gear with the Jewelcrafting profession; choose between the Aldor or Scryer factions in Shattrath and earn their unique rewards; create a paladin on the Horde or a shaman on the Alliance; and more.

Before entering the Dark Portal, players will be presented with a choice for each of their existing WoW Classic characters: to progress to the Burning Crusade era along with the rest of the Horde and Alliance heroes on their realm, or to continue adventuring in the original WoW Classic content on all-new “Classic Era” servers coming with the rollout of Burning Crusade Classic. Players who want to experience the best of both worlds will have the option to “clone” each WoW Classic character as an optional paid service, allowing each hero to venture forth into Burning Crusade Classic while their copies continue their original adventure on a Classic Era realm. Further details on each realm type and the available options for characters will be provided at a later date.

For players who don’t have characters ready for the journey beyond the Dark Portal and are interested in adventuring in Outland with their friends, Blizzard will also offer an optional level-58 character boost service closer to the expansion’s launch. To help preserve the integrity of players’ accomplishments in WoW Classic, this boost will not be usable on Classic Era realms or on the new blood elf or draenei races; in addition, players will be limited to boosting only one character per World of Warcraft account. Further details, including details around pricing and availability, will be announced at a later date.

As with WoW Classic, access to Burning Crusade Classic will be included in players’ existing World of Warcraft subscriptions at no additional cost. In the near future, Blizzard Entertainment will be kicking off a beta test for Burning Crusade Classic, calling upon players to give feedback on the experience and help ensure the expansion strikes the best possible balance between authenticity and enjoyment. The tournament will be split into two regions: North America and Europe. All games will take place on live servers for WoW Classic, using the War Game feature. Here’s how it all works:

• Teams of 15 players will sign up for their region. Signups are open to eligible players with a level 60 character on live servers for WoW Classic—check eligibility and sign up for NA here and EU here!
• The tournament will be split into two stages for each region: qualifiers and finals.
  • The qualifiers are open signups.
  • The finals will feature the top six teams within each region.
• Teams will battle against each other on live servers using the War Game feature, allowing players to queue up battlegrounds against other teams in their region.
• For the top six teams in North America and Europe, there will be a total of $6,000 (USD) in separate prizing for each region.

Deep within the jungles of Stranglethorn, an old evil stirs in the ancient troll city of Zul’Gurub. Adventurers will need to gather 19 of their strongest allies to delve deep into the mysteries of this newly released WoW Classic raid zone, once the jewel of the Gurubashi troll tribe. 

Meanwhile, the Dragons of Nightmare have made their way to Azeroth, and champions of the Horde and the Alliance will need to amass as many allies as they can to defeat them at four key portal entry points throughout Azeroth. 

Lastly, master anglers will be able to prove their chops in the weekly Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, which will offer cool rewards to Azeroth’s best fishers.
