5 Reasons to get Hyped for World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth

World of Warcraft is getting its newest expansion, Battle for Azeroth, on August 13th. We rounded up the five most prominent features and changes coming to World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth.

Allied races

Possibly the most requested feature ever in WoW. Allied races are a form of sub races coming to BFA. Traditionally Blizzard has added between 0-2 new races with each expansion. However with allied races Blizzard are adding eight new races! For the alliance you have: Void Elf, Lightforged Draenei, Dark Iron Dwarf and Kul Tiran Humans. The horde are getting: Nightborne, Highmountain Tauren, Zandalari Troll and Mag’har Orc. Each allied race comes with all new passive and active racials, a unique race mount, and if you level a brand new character you also get a unique cool looking transmog set!



One of the most interesting things about allied races is the way you unlock them. Up until now with every expansion the new races would simply be available to play when the expansion releases. However for BFA blizzard are mixing it up. Allied races unlocks are tied to the story. In order to unlock allied races you will have to complete some story line quests, earn certain achievements and reach exalted with some factions. For example in order to unlock the Void Elves, which are already available in Legion if you pre order BFA, you need to earn exalted status with the Argussian Reach faction and complete the story line campaign of Argus.


Warfronts are Blizzard attempt at recreating the classic Warcraft III RTS feeling. In warfronts you take the role of a commander in a battle for your faction. you and 19 other players will gather resources, train troops, build outposts and construct and maintain supply lines. All in order to crush the opposing faction!

Now you’re probably thinking “that’s nice and all but whats in it for me?” Well the rewards for engaging and completing successful warfronts are not set in stone yet but its safe to assume that Azerite (BFA’s new currency akin to Legion’s artifact power) will be rewarded. However the most interesting reward about warfronts is that its victors will get access to outdoor open world content such as world bosses and rare spawns.

Overall warfronts seem like a great way to relieve the classic Warcraft III feeling of gathering resources, planning your strategy and building accordingly, and seeing all your hard work pay off as you crush the opposing faction!


Island Expeditions

Island expeditions are a 3v3 (pve or pvp) combat scenario in which you travel to an island and compete against the opposing faction for resources, Azerite and treasures. Now that sounds a pretty standard affair but its most certainly is not. Island expeditions are unique in the way they generate content. Each time you travel to an island its points of interest, treasures, capture points, mobs available, Weather conditions etc will be randomly generated. Adding random generation to WoW is a new and very interesting move by Blizzard possibly inspired by Diablo’s rifts and greater rifts. By randomising key points and objectives, Blizzard are ensuring you get a somewhat fresh experience each time you travel to an island. This randomisation of content massively increases its replay value while keeping it fresh and not grindy.

Other than the random nature of island expeditions Blizzard are also adding a new AI system to your competitors on the island. This new AI system is like nothing we have ever seen before in WoW. Your AI controlled competitors fight you for resources and dynamically respond to your actions. So for example if you rush an objective the AI might respond to that by fighting you for that objective or it might decide to split and capture several other objectives while you are committed to that one objective. The AI seems like a great addition to island expeditions by ensuring a fun and dynamic experience.


New Zones and Story

Battle for Azeroth story escalates and focuses on the war between the Horde and the Alliance. This focus on faction war harkens back to the core and roots of Warcraft. Previous expansions had both factions fight a grand evil such as the lich king or Deathwing, and most recently the burning legion. BFA zooms in on the conflict between the horde and alliance. This story line shift allows a greater focus on personal character development and stories. In BFA you are no longer fighting a big bad, instead you are fighting each other for control of Azeroth and Azerite.



Accompanying this new story are two new continents with several new zones. For the alliance side we are venturing into Kul Tiras, a maritime empire. While the hordes will be exploring Zandalar, the seat of the Zandalari trolls. In Kul Tiras we will travel to Stormsong Valley, Drustvar and Tiragarde Sound. Each of these new zones offers a different theme and feel. For instance Stormsong Valley is dark and has a strong nautical theme. While Drustva is a mountainous forest area. On the horde side we will be travelling to Zandalar which contains Nazmir, Zuldazar and Voldun. Each horde zone also has a different theme. Voldun is a desert area home to snake-like people. In stark contrast Zuldazar is a trollish tropic jungle filled with ancient troll structures and beasts. Each new zone feels vastly different to other and fun to explore.


Mythic Plus Changes

In Legion Blizzard introduced the mythic plus dungeons system. mythic plus dungeons are infinitely scaling 5 man dungeons. Mythic plus dungeons scale according to your performance.

Other than HP and damage scaling there are also weekly affixes attached to each keystone. These weekly affixes can affect the dungeon in different interesting ways. For example the Sanguine affix causes each mob to leave a pool of blood when he dies. The pool damages allies and heals mobs forcing the party to kite mobs away and avoid the pools. This mythic plus system was very successful in Legion and blizzard are adding and expanding upon that base system. One of the major changes coming to mythic plus are seasonal affixes. These affixes are temporary and will change every few months. Adding seasonal affixes keeps the dungeon runs fresh and there is always something new to look out for.

Another new major change coming is the inability to switch gear while you are in a mythic plus instance. In legion you are free to switch gear while in the instance. This allows any player to adjust their gear according to the upcoming challenge. BFA changes this by not allowing players to switch gear mid dungeon. This change will force players to plan and choose their gear in a way that would fit the entire instance. As you progress and reach higher and higher keystones you might have some difficult choices to make. Do I sacrifice some of my area of effect damage for more single target? Do I need to spec into more defensive talents and gear choices to survive the massive damage ? These are only some of the choices players will have to make when entering a mythic plus dungeon in BFA.
