DDos Attack Affecting Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood Launch
The server issues over the past week since Final Fantasy XIV launched Stormblood is due to DDos attacks. The revelation came in an official forum post by Game Director Yoshida. According to the team, the attacks are still on-going and are the reason for the issues.
“We have confirmed that since Jun. 16th, we have been experiencing DDoS attacks* from an anonymous third-party targeting the FINAL FANTASY XIV game servers on the NA data center.
Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment. We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle.
Due to this attack, our game servers, network equipment and network connection are being hit with heavy load at an extensive level, which is causing a disconnection from the game and login difficulties.”
Fortunately for FFXIV players, account details are not in danger of being exposed due to these attacks. Some within the community are calling this a convenient excuse to hide the fact that Square Enix were not prepared. The Stormblood expansion is proving to be a popular one with critics giving it very high praise.
Because of this, many returning players are flocking back to FFXIV especially on the NA servers. That could possibly have added to the server load and SE might have underestimated the numbers.
