SEGA’s Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is coming this summer, with a closed beta test happening in May 2021. For those that don’t know, New Genesis is a brand new game in the Phantasy Star Online universe. If you’ve never heard about it, here’s what you can expect.
All New Standalone Game
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is most definitely a new separate game from PS02. It takes place 1000 years after the events in PSO2, featuring new stories and gameplay mechanics. New Genesis will remain free to play as an MMORPG with the optional cash store items like we have at present time. Launch is expected to take place in June 2021.
New Graphics
Players can expect New Genesis to look way better than Phantasy Star Online 2, thanks to the announcement that it will run on a new graphics engine. From the trailer, gameplay looks pretty amazing and so much sleeker that PSO2. A new engine means combat animations, environment and character models will all be given a face lift.
All New Combat System
One of the most important aspect of the game is the combat system, and it appears that New Genesis will overhaul the combat system, providing a more meaningful, cohesive and fun experience for players in New Genesis. When paired with the new graphics, we cannot wait to see just how the game plays, and if the trailer is any indication, it already looks pretty damn good.
Better Open-field Map
The way Phantasy Star Online 2 plays on a map level is vastly different from most open world MMOS, as it uses a closed off and small space to tell its stories and game content. In New Genesis, we will be seeing a fresh approach, and some previews are calling it the Monster Hunter: World model, where players can expect larger play fields.
Your Character Lives On
While New Genesis is a standalone game that’s separate from PSO2, your current character can be transferred over when the time comes. Your likeness and more will be given a facelift of course, but not everything will carry over. Experience, currency and some items will not be brought forward, and we’re still waiting for more information about this.
