The Elder Scrolls Online Reports 8.5 Million Players Based On Sales
The Elder Scrolls Online has just wrapped up an online press event and it was announced that the game boasts 8.5 million players.
Developer Matt Firor was on hand to deliver the update and it was good news. He states that the number of players are based on units sold and not just the amount of player registered accounts. This means that ESO has just become one of the most purchased Buy To Play MMORPGs of all time.
As we wrote in our article recently, there are plenty of changes over the years that have helped the game’s cause. The One Tamriel update is the most logical explanation. The update has made leveling in the game non-linear and fun to play.
Another explanation is of course that the game is on consoles. Multiplatform MMORPGs tend to do very well in sales as the game reaches a wider set of audiences on the Xbox and Playstation. What’s truly impressive here is how fast Zenimax Online Studios has turned things around.
Remember, only a couple of years ago, The Elder Scrolls Online was in deep trouble. Player numbers dwindled, and ESO had to drop its subscription based model for the buy to play model.
We know now that it proved to be a stroke of genius, and the sale numbers proves this. So what can players expect in the coming months for ESO? The revenue will give the developers a lot more resources to work with for starters.
June will also be a very positive month for the MMO as players will be able to play in Morrowind. The DLC will definitely strike the nostalgia chord of old Elder Scrolls gamers, and could increase sales further for the game.
Overall, this is still fantastic news for fans of the game. We can’t wait to see how the game progresses.
