PUBG vs Fortnite: Who’s Ripping Off Who?
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a big commotion going on between PUBG and Fortnite. The latter has just introduced a “battle royal” mode to the game, and many are pointing out the similarities to PUBG.
While it’s common place for developers to get inspired by others and design similar content, it’s the players that stoked the fires. Many on Reddit pointed out to PUBG developers that Fortnite has actually, copied too much. What makes this bout really interesting is that Bluehole’s Chang Han Kim has gotten involved. Here’s what he had to say: “We are contemplating further action”.
It sounds like a lawsuit is coming. I find it extremely hilarious, because we’re witnessing the modern gaming age of monopolization. Come on. Remember when World of Warcraft rose to become the most popular MMORPG in the world? I can name about 20 clones that copies a lot from WoW, and Blizzard didn’t even blink. Why bother when you know you’ve got the better product right?
Unfortunately for Bluehole, this press is bad press. Firstly, they aren’t even the ones who pioneered the Battle Royal genre. Many games do this even before PUBG took off. Just because it’s now the most played game on Steam, doesn’t mean you get to rewrite history. That’s my two cents. Share yours in the comments section below.
