If you haven’t heard of Closers, you should. Its an En Masse Entertainment game that’s incredibly unique – aesthetically that is. Anime in MMOs are all over the place in the free to play section on Steam. And I feel like Closers is one step above the average, by introducing a more focused online RPG game in an Anime world.

What Is It Exactly?

In Closers, players become an elite agent of UNION, an organization dedicated to dealing with the threat of interdimensional aliens spilling through a series of mysterious portals that have appeared throughout New Seoul. At launch, players can choose one of five playable members of the Black Lambs team: Seha, a reluctant combat genius; Sylvi, the dedicated leader; Yuri, the skilled martial artist who only recently discovered her powers; Misteltein, a prodigious young boy with amazing support skills; or J, the grizzled veteran with a troubled past. Each character’s unique personality and combat style allows players to chart their own path through a complex, branching narrative, upgrading their skills and weapons along the way, and unlocking amazing new powers in a quest to vanquish a gargantuan interdimensional threat.

Check out the trailer below.

So with Alpha out of the way, Founders Packs are now available for purchase. You’ll get a bunch of stuff with them, including CBT access.

In addition to granting closed beta access to Closers, each level of Founder’s Pack contains En Masse Points (EMP) currency for the in-game store, in-game mystery boxes, and cosmetic rewards. There’s a Closers Founders Pack for players of all interest levels, whether it’s the $14.99 Trainee Bundle or the $149.99 premium Ace Closer Bundle, which comes packed with exclusive costumes, 180 days of elite subscription time, 10,000 EMP, and much more.

Starting on November 7 running through Tuesday, December 5, En Masse is hosting an assortment of in-game events for all Closers closed beta test participants. Simply logging in each day rewards players with a variety of increasingly valuable items, culminating in a permanent Lucky Chick Pet Egg. Beginning Saturday, November 11, logging in during weekends provides players with useful consumable items at regular intervals for the first two hours of their playtime each day. Players who clear dungeons worth more than 10 Fatigue Points throughout the beta will be rewarded with CBT Gift Tokens for their efforts. These tokens can be spent on pieces of the full Gifted Cadet Uniform in-game. The final CBT in-game event remains active through Tuesday, December 19, and rewards players with valuable in-game bundles every 10 levels (starting at level 30 and ending at level 60).

Top 5 Best Modern ARPG 2018

There isn’t much going on in the ARPG world come 2018 in terms of releases that we know of. Therefore, here are 5 of what we consider to be the most fun ARPGs from 2017 that will have a better year (we hope!) ahead. These are MMOs, Co-ops and MOBAS thrown in all together.

#1 Path of Exile

Path of Exile remains of the best ARPGs out there in terms of gameplay. It stands toe to toe with Blizzard’s Diablo 3, but with more to offer considering it’s buy-in price. The combat is satisfying, and there’s so many good updates added to the game that makes it all the more worthwhile. Somehow, deep down I really wished PoE was an MMO. Not meaning a grindier game, but the ability to play with more friends and do larger group content. Either way, for a single player game, Path of Exile is a must play if you love ARPGs.

#2 MU Legend

While PoE might not be an ARPG MMO, MU Legend certainly is. The follow up to MU Online is a vast, open MU world with lots of hack and slashing to be done. It takes plenty of inspiration from Diablo 3 aesthetically, but could not be farther from it when it comes to content. You can expect a decent lighthearted story, lots of Rift dungeons to do either solo or with a guild and more. The MMO layer is pretty prevalent, which also means there’s a cash shop. Worry not, the best items still only drops in-game, so everyone has a fair shot. The PvP is also pretty fun, so if you want a free to play ARPG MMO, check out MU Legend.

#3 Albion Online

Albion Online only released in July of 2017, and it’s one of the most talked about sandbox games of the year. This MMO ARPG offers a lot of nostalgia for players coming from games such as Runescape and Everquest. It probably has the worst graphics out of all on this list, but makes up for it with its huge online community in a persistent world. Guild vs Guild PvP is the main attraction, as is the required grind. Players are penalized upon death with their loot being taken in PvP zones, so there’s a real risk and reward element to the gameplay. You can either be a bandit, or farm and craft your way to riches. If PvP and domination is your thing, then get a guild and rule in Albion Online.

#4 Master X Master (MXM)

Representing the MOBA genre is MXM. NCSOFT’s Master X Master is fun, fast paced and offers lots of fan service for players familiar with NCSOFT games. In true MOBA fashion, you can select a ton of hero characters from NCSOFT games to use in any of the PvP and PvE modes. There’s Rytlock from Guild Wars 2 for example, and hanging out in the main lobby you’ll hear themes such as Blade and Soul’s soundtrack emitting from the jukebox. MXM offers a decent single player experience, but it’s all about the PvP modes. The learning curve is decent, and the crafting system ensures that progression is fair for all.

#5 Legends of Aria

For a more wholesome online experience, Legends of Aria could be your choice. Formerly known as Shards of Aria, the game has gone through a major overhaul. It’s got a living virtual world in which players can build the land around them with homes in addition to taming animals. There’s dungeon romps, PvP and open ended character development which makes this a top sandbox ARPG MMO. Legends of Aria is still in development, and to play the alpha you will need to pledge. Fortunately, the game is doing pretty OK so at least you know you’re investing in a decent game. Hopefully, 2018 will see its full release.

MU Legend begin its open beta globally this week, and I was eager to check it out. MU Legend is of course the highly anticipated action MMO and follow up to MU Online.  It features fluid and stunning hack ‘n’ slash combat, content that caters to both solo and party play, and a deep and intriguing world that will satisfy new players and fans alike. Players can choose from four distinct classes – Dark Lord, Whisperer, Blader and War Mage – and engage in the endless battle between the world of MU and Pandemonium. MU Legend offers spectacular visuals that will run on lower-end systems and boasts detailed art design with stunning effects.

Now that you know just a bit about the game, how fun is it? I can honestly tell you, it’s pretty good – everything from the opening tutorial to my first Rift dungeon run was great.

5 different class, multiple races and of course Talent Trees to build your ultimate character.

MU Legend Is More Than Just A Diablo Clone

One of the first things I noticed was just how similar this game is to D3. Everything from the aesthetics to the UI resembles Blizzard’s ARPG. But luckily, that’s where the comparisons stop. Beneath its ARPG layer, MU Legend has built an impressive depth for a new MMORPG set in the MU world. You’ll find plenty of players on every map unlike traditional ARPGs, and some mechanics will definitely make you feel like you’re in an MMO.

Combat and gameplay-wise, it’s all to do with action RPG hacking and slashing. The five classes have two different Talent trees to branch out it, offering different weapons and skills to use. I got a taste of a fully maxed out character for my class in the tutorial, and I had so much fun with it. It’s faced paced, feels right and it definitely hooked me.

The quality of cut-scenes are surprisingly good.

High Production Values

I was also very impressed by just how good the presentation is – and I’m not talking about character textures or graphics that other Korean MMOs prioritize. I’m talking about grand cinematic cut scenes for storytelling, complemented by voice acting. These are all in MU Legend to a varying degree and I was pleasantly surprised that I actually found watching them enjoyable. Even the soundtrack is great. From a graphics standpoint, it’s decent but does have its issues. Even on a high-end gaming machine, I suffer from FPS drops here and there. It could be an optimization thing, which I hope does not make it out from open beta to live.

Other parts of the game are also well handled. Jumping into MU Legend for the first time can be daunting, and the game helps you all the way. There’s an in-depth info help center that pretty much explains every damned mechanic in MU Legend which is a ton of help.

Combat at the higher levels are ridiculously fun.

The X Factor

Where MU Legends shines the most for me is with its high level combat. Unfortunately, the early levels are incredibly sluggish and slow. You have a ton of content to do – Rift dungeons are one which earns you decent gear and XP. Beyond that, there’s all manner of quests including the main story quest chain that is actually decent. The problem is, that opening 2-3 hours can feel painfully slow, especially for someone that’s a D3 veteran. The X Factor that MU Legend has is definitely the fun combat, but it needs to rework it for the early levels. But who knows, maybe it’s done intentionally to push players to purchase VIP from the cash shop for faster XP. Just a guess there.

But either ways, I’m having a blast in MU Legend. If you need a casual ARPGMMO to hack and slash some, check this one out. It’s also free to play, which I should have pointed out much earlier. Oh well.
