It’s never nice to see or hear that an MMORPG is shutting down. 2019 may be a good year for most MMOs especially the top five to six, but there are new casualties this year. Earlier this month, we learned of two new game closures. Therefore, here’s our revised list of the 5 most popular MMORPGs that is now shut down and officially dead.

5. Wildstar

Wildstar is gone forever. This free to play (wasn’t when launched) MMORPG gave us the bright, colorful and unique world of Nexus that showed bags of promise. Two factions, the Exiles and the Dominion vying for survival and ownership of this foreign world was just the tip of the iceberg. The game’s combat was fresh, its dungeons and raids at end-game hard for those that dare to do it. Overall, Wildstar offered many high points, like its amazing housing system and movement mechanics amid a wave of carbon copy MMORPGs. Unfortunately, lack of content and players over four years since release mean NCSOFT, its publishers, ran out of patience. Wildstar was officially shut down in November 2018.

4. Cloud Pirates

Only a few months since its release, the plug was pulled on Cloud Pirates. The aerial PvP arena MMO did see some life during its run. The game utilized clever progression systems while keeping the focus on the fun team-based combat and air ship classes. Developers  My.com still have not come out with any explanation or reasoning for sunsetting the game. For us inquisitive folks, its easy to see why. The PvP ship battle game just isn’t popular enough to gain the traction and playerbase it needs. According to game data tracking site SteamSpy, the average peak concurrent players on Steam isn’t great. It averages 200 players online at any one time, which is not at all healthy for an MMO of any kind.

3. Bless Online

Neowiz announced in June 2019 that Bless Online will shut down in September. This brings to a close, one of the most notorious Korean MMORPG in recent history. What made Bless infamous you ask? Well, it failed in two of its native region launches for starters, then decided it was going to launch globally on Steam, it promised plenty of improvements both to quality of life and gameplay, and none of them were fulfilled at launch, and even the performance of the game was worst than ever before. They charged a buy to play fee at early access then made it go free to play, all the while, funding a new Bless game for the Xbox One called Bless: Unleashed, out later in 2019. The warning signs were there when players called them out, but the hype train was too strong, and the backlash came like a tsunami. Don’t think this is the last we’ve seen of Bless though, the IP is like a roach.

2. Paragon

We see a theme here. If you’re going to make a brand new MOBA game, it needs to be bloody brilliant or no one’s going to be playing it. In Paragon’s case, this isn’t why the game shut down for good this April. Paragon was a decent MOBA that had all the right ingredients, but lacked the manpower to maintain. Epic Games – you know them as the creators of Fortnite – was simply swamped with the game that is making them rich. That’s Fortnite if you haven’t already guessed. Therefore, they announced that Paragon was difficult to maintain, and would rather focus their energies on a game that actually brings in the money. Makes sense.

1. Marvel Heroes

At top spot is Marvel Heroes, yet another superhero MMORPG game that lost to the bad guys. The bad guys here are the developers themselves. Marvel Heroes started off very well. Its blend of ARPG gameplay meets Iron Man and co worked pretty well on the PC. It’s the game that Marvel fans flocked to, to play as all the newly released Heros that came out with each MCU release. Where it all went wrong however, was with a greedy, hastily designed console port. The Omega launch alienated a majority of the core player-base. In addition to that, bad mismanagement at the top of Gazillion Entertainment didn’t help the developers’ cause. This resulted in Disney pulling the license. Marvel Heroes officially went dark in November 2017. We’re still wondering if we’ll truly see a proper Marvel MMO.

It’s always unfortunate when MMO games shut down. While the genre as a whole has never been better with the rise of online multiplayer bringing a surge of new games, it’s not always a happy ending. With competition for player attention and revenue at an all time high, some games and studios just cannot compete with what’s already established. With that said, here’s our list of five MMOs that got shut down despite being fun to play.

5. Wildstar

It’s hard to believe that Wildstar is no longer with is. It averages 200 players online at any one time, which is not at all healthy for an MMO of any kind.

3. MXM (Master X Master)

NCSOFT is no stranger to shutting down games, and MXM is one of its latest titles to be axed. Released out of open beta and into the wilderness almost a year ago, MXM was considered by many, us included, to be a fresh take on the MOBA genre. The game’s roster of heroes includes fan-favorite characters from NCSOFT’s other games. This includes the likes of Guild Wars 2, Blade and Soul and Wildstar. However, for a game that was made to attract MOBA players, it didn’t hit whatever internal goal the company had set. As a result, MXM shut down on January 31st 2018. The good news is, the game did inspire a host of other similar games, like Battlerite.

You’ve decided that you finally want to play Guild Wars 2 in 2019. Excellent, and we bid you welcome to the world of Tyria! Guild Wars 2’s persistent open world is packed with content, adventures and friendships along the way. We’ve put together a quick crash course and things we feel you need to know to get you started. Keep in mind, that the guide is also tailored towards players who bought the game, so there isn’t any free to play restrictions.

5. Forget Your Traditional MMORPG Questing Experience

One of the biggest changes players will feel when coming from other MMOs is the questing and PvE experience. As a new player coming out of your starter zone, you’ll obviously want to quest for XP. The thing is, Guild Wars 2 doesn’t offer the traditional questing experience. There isn’t a reliance to go speak to NPCs to ‘pick up’ quests, then return for rewards. In Tyria, there will be Tasks, or Gold Hearts found throughout every map. When you get close to one, the objectives are automatically added to your objective tracker and you can swap between them by moving between Tasks. Completing these are good for XP, Karma and coin, but don’t just do them religiously. The game also wants you to explore, take part in zone events and more. All of these activities gives you XP, so to be effective at leveling up, do all of them.

4. Join A Guild ASAP For Benefits

It’s perfectly fine if you want to play the game solo. But joining a guild doesn’t necesarrily force you to group. We recommend joining an active one anyway, because the game’s guild system will offer you some really good benefits if you’re new and leveling. Firstly, there’s the Guild Halls. You can port to your Guild’s hall from anywhere in the map for free, and within you can get benefits. For example, if the guild is a high level one with NPCs within the hall, head to the tavern.

Here, you can get free 10% XP boost potions for landscape PvE, World vs World PvP and sPvP as well. These lasts for 24 hours and did we mention it’s free? It’s a small boost but it all adds up if you’re a new player. Additionally, be sure to hit the Y button and check out the Looking for Group tool. If you need help with landscape bosses, Hero Points and more, there will be Commanders advertising their groups on there regularly. Simple join one from the tool and have fun.

3. Making Gold

A popular question from new players is, how to make gold quickly? There’s plenty of ways to make gold, but the speed at which you earn them is relative to how much time you spend doing something in-game. Firstly, gold is account-wide and shared among all your characters. So if you have multiple toons running Fractals each week, you’re bound to make a lot. Besides that, study the Auction House closely.

See what sells, especially crafting resources like Ores. Ores can be gathered on the landscape easily and because the node is instanced to you, you’re not fighting with other players in the area to farm them. Simply start gathering what you can and start selling them regularly. Alternatively, run the content a lot. Especially event and map meta trains that offers tons of loot bags. You can then deconstruct them for Gold and also sell them on the AH for Gold.

2. Choose Your Grinds

Another thing about Guild Wars 2 most people find odd is the grinds and gear treadmills. Simply put, you aren’t expected or required to grind a lot to play the game’s latest content. There are a few gear rarities to note, from White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Pink and then there’s Legendary. White to Gold comes easily if you’re just playing casually. And Gold gear – the Exotics – are more than enough to run even the hardest of boss fights, main story instances and more. The last two tiers are completely optional and while there are Achievements and metas for them, you do them at your own pace as the stat difference is marginally higher. They look great though, so if you’re a cosmetic hunter and want to look and wear the best stuff, be warned, these are long grinds especially Legendaries.

1. Learn To Dodge, Doing The Daily and Unlock Mounts ASAP

Once you’ve grasped the basics of what Guild Wars 2 is about, here comes the nitty gritty. First of all, the art of combat and learning to dodge. Sounds rudimentary, but you will need to master this for future content. In the Heart of Thorns expansion, the difficulty scales a lot harder than the vanilla content. As a result, expect to take a lot of hits from harder monsters. Learning to dodge attacks and counter break bars will be crucial here.

Secondly, is getting into the habit of finishing your Daily Achievements. These reset at 8PM EST daily. They give you 2 Gold, Spirit Shards and 10 Achievement Points. All of these are great for new players, especially Achievement Points. APs when accumulated to milestones, grants you account wide unlocks to more Gold Gain, XP Gain and other boosts to your account. It’s a great incentive to be an Achievement hunter.

And finally, if you only can make one expansion purchase, make it Path of Fire. The Mounts that you unlock will be extremely useful, and become game changers for you here on out. Each of the five mounts can help you get around faster, reach other wise hard places for content and more.

It’s always a tragic time when MMO games shut down. While the genre as a whole has never been better with the rise of online multiplayer bringing a surge of new games, it’s not always a happy ending. With competition for player attention and revenue at an all time high, some games and studios just cannot compete with what’s already established. With that said, here’s our list of five recently launched MMOs that shut down too soon.

5. LawBreakers

It’s been almost a year since E3 2017, where the game announced it was launching out of early access on August 8th 2017. LawBreakers had great ideas with its class systems that for an FPS arena shooter, felt well paced and executed in design. Unfortunately, operating in the shadow of Overwatch and rising games like PUBG did it no favors. In the past year alone, FPS online games ran amok with so many coming out, especially free to play titles. With LawBreakers being a buy to play game, it had another disadvantage. The rise of other games from the Battle Royale genre like Fortnite also gave players a reason to check out free to play titles with equal amounts of fun. In the end, Boss Key Productions announced a week after itself was revealed to be shutting down, that the lights would go out on LawBreakers come September 2018.

The wait for Guild Wars 2’s Episode 3 is nearly over. Out June 26th, Long Live The Lich is the third episode in this Living World Season (4) cycle, and it comes with awesome new features. Here’s a quick rundown of 5 new features that should get you excited to jump back in.

5. New Roller Beetle Mount

The Path of Fire expansion last September introduced 5 new mounts, and this week we’ll be getting a brand new sixth mount! At long last, the reveal trailer showed off the Roller Beetle, a staple animal in the Elona region that dates back to Guild Wars – the first game. Beetle races and things alike were common in the first game, and it’s nice to see them return. From what we know from the trailer, Roller Beetles will be pretty fast and good for smashing through obstacles. This could be a recurring theme come the new episode which takes place on a brand new map, the Domain of Kourna. What we don’t yet know is the exact skills and specialty feature that the new mount will have. Check out our post on our top 5 Guild Wars 2 mounts ranked from least useful to most useful here.

4. Making Use Of The Newly Improved Underwater Combat

Back in early May 2018, ArenaNet revamped its underwater combat system. The changes includes tweaking the flow and pace of underwater combat to match that of land battles. That simply means, fighting monsters and enemies underwater should be faster and won’t feel like a slog. To that end, that has been achieved and then some – there’s new underwater treasure hunt content too, that rewards players with Achievement Points, Titles and more. Was the improvements a prelude to something bigger? This episode will reveal if it is, as the new map looks like it will have areas that takes players underwater.

3. New Fractal

For players craving new group content, there’s a new Fractal to chew through. Based on the design and architecture of the trailer snippets, it looks good. There’s puzzles to solve and a new big bad arachnid baddie lurking down there too. It’s also ancient Dwarven by the looks of things, so this is an interesting avenue to explore the lore.

2. New Legendary Warhorn

If you’re on the path to collect every Legendary weapon in-game, here’s a new one. The Legendary Warhorn Verdarach will be a keeper. Besides looking like it’s the largest Warhorn in the game, it has some awesome aesthetics. From the trailer, we see spirits emerging upon use to attack enemies, which is – pardon the slang – cool AF.

1. The Fight Against Palawa Joko Reaches Boiling Point

And most importantly of all, the main story chapter continues. Since Path of Fire ended, we’ve been hot on the trail of Palawa Joko. This guy needs no introduction, having been around since GW1. After making use of the Inquest and the Scarab Plague in the last episode, the time has come for confrontation. From the trailer, we appear to be once again in Joko’s domain. We cannot wait to see which friends and allies join us in what appears to be an epic showdown this episode. Are you excited to continue your journey in Guild Wars 2, Commanders?
