Wargaming, the studio behind the popular World of Warships MMO, has partnered with Muskogee War Memorial Park to raise money to repair the USS Batfish, which experienced extensive damage due to flooding earlier this year. The USS Batfish was integral to naval warfare in WWII, sinking 15 Japanese ships, including three Japanese submarines in just 76 hours, making her the most successful submarine killing sub in history.

The campaign kicks off today with the “Save the Batfish” in-game package. Players will have the opportunity to donate $10 to restore the historic WWII submarine and will receive special rewards for their contributions. Items include eight Dragon Flags and a combat patch similar to the patch worn by the sailors who served on the submarine.

“Working to preserve these ships and their history is part of our mission to ensure future generations can fully understand and remember those who served,” said Ray Hazlip, Regional Publishing Producer at Wargaming  “Our community has shown us how passionate they are about preserving naval history as two years ago they raised approximately $300,000 to restore the USS Texas.”

The goal is to help the museum reach $150,000 to cover repairs, which include sandblasting, painting, relocation, a new stabilization platform, and interior floor tiles and gauges which were all damaged by the water. The submarine is an important piece of WWII naval history that the museum wants to protect for future generations.

“To those who do not see it, the Batfish represents a weird roadside attraction dedicated to crazy sailors who wanted to honor their lost friends. To the inquisitive mind with an eye for history, a visitor can learn about the value of service, the impact that the United States Submarine Force had on the war in the pacific,” explained Brent Trout, Executive Director of the Muskogee War Memorial Park. “Simply put, our World War II submarine museums are in danger. Some of them are well funded and in the right place, but others are in jeopardy of being scrapped. Protecting the USS Batfish means saving history and protecting the sacrifice of every sailor who called a submarine home.”

Donations will be taken through GoFundMe  at gofundme.com/f/savetheussbatfish

On November 22, players will have the opportunity to learn more about the USS Batfish’s history as Nicholas Moran (The_Chieftain) hosts a Charity Stream at twitch.tv/worldofwarships

In case you missed it, Wargaming’s ARPG Pagan Online has officially launched after a period of early access. Pagan Online has evolved into one of the most exciting dungeon-crawlers on the market, defined by classic top-down gameplay, session-based PVE action, unique characters, and demanding combat that will challenge even the most seasoned players.

What Is Pagan Online?

The game is primarily a fast-paced, Hack and Slash top-down ARPG developed by Mad Head Games and Wargaming. It features all the classic RPG gameplay, fused with session-based PVE action, unique characters and offers players both new and veterans a real challenge. You’ll engage the main story campaign via a series of Acts, each featuring multiple chapters. They’re also voice-acted to give it that AAA feel. The game has a crafting system, and you’ll gather mats while you’re out and about in these missions. Expect to see tons and tons of loot as you annihilate scores of enemies, but be weary of boss fights though – they can hurt if you make even the tiniest of mistakes.

Here’s All The Additions Since Early Access

Today, Pagan Online launches with massive amounts of new in-game content including new characters, zones and features stemming directly from community feedback. During Pagan Online’s early access period, Mad Head Games and Wargaming have closely followed player response to further develop and polish the game. Below are the key additions thanks to that feedback from Early Access players:

Epic New Content – Headlined by two new playable characters, Hector and Eldan, Pagan Online launches with new game-changing content including new bosses, items, maps, zones, and more for all stages of the game.

60-Hour Campaign – A full campaign inspired by Slavic myths and spread across eight acts is now complete.

Expanded Control Options – By popular demand, Pagan Online now supports a click-to-move control scheme as well as gamepad support.

Revamped Systems – Item drops and recipes have received major balance tweaks to reflect higher diversity and value, while the game’s crafting system has also been overhauled.

New Skill Trees – Players can harness the power of new skill trees, allowing them more freedom to customize their builds and find their preferred path to destruction.

What The Pagan Online Team Has To Say

“Pagan Online has come a long way from when we first entered early access to now, and we’d like to thank every player that has supported the game so far for their help along the way,” said Jacob Beucler, Product Director at Wargaming America. “With major changes to controls, game balance, and skill and crafting systems, as well as a load of new content, we’re proud to present the launch version of Pagan Online. We just hope you’re all up for a challenge!”

“The amazing community that has formed around Pagan Online has been instrumental in making it the best dungeon crawler that it can be,” added Uros Banjesevic, Chief Creative Officer of Mad Head Games. “Throughout early access, we prioritized listening to our player base and have consistently taken their feedback to heart. In our eyes, Pagan Online’s launch is as much a product of our community as it is from Mad Head Games. We’re looking forward to continuing to evolve the game even further with all of you!”

For those interested, the game is on Steam and costs $29.99.

Total War Arena First Impressions (Closed Beta)

Total War Arena is unique. It’s a result of a collaboration between creative assembly who are known for masterful strategy RTS Total War games, and Wargaming.net, creators of World of Tanks, Warplanes and Warships. Total War Arena is currently in closed beta, and we’ve taken a look at it in its current development stage, and share some thoughts about our initial impressions of the game.

What Is It?

For starters, what is Total War Arena? The game is as you’d expect, set in a historical period where players can play as commanders of three different empires, the Romans, the Greeks and the Barbarians. In true Wargaming fashion, you’ll get to select your commander of choice for battle, and control three units in matches with friends against ai or human opponents.

Every battle has familiar objectives, especially if you have played other Wargaming titles. You’ll need to capture the opponent’s base by moving your units in the capture area, and there are other ways to win as well, such as eliminating all enemy units or having the most amount of units alive at the end of the countdown timer. Matches can be a spectacle because you’re part of a team. So it’s a 10 vs 10, where each player has 3 units to control, so imagine the mayhem. And that’s just the surface.

As the commander of your units, you’ll gain access to unit skills that you can toggle in battle. The higher your commander’s experience and level, the more skills you unlock. From a Total War perspective, you’ll be quite at home with the battle mechanics for units as well. Each of your units contains about 100 soldiers, and each will have a morale and health bar. Tactics and battlefield maneuvers such as flanking enemies will greatly decrease enemy unit morale bars and make them flee. So all your experience from playing past Total War games will come in handy during the actual battle.

Familiar Progression

But that’s where the line between what we know of from past games gets drawn. Due to it being an MMO now, there are new progression mechanics in place that relies a lot on the blueprint of Wargaming games.

To ultimate become competitive and effective in Total War Arena, you need to play matches to gain experience points and silver. These two currencies will be hugely important for your progression. In true Wargaming fashion, the three empires you can play as does have individual tech trees. Within them, you can unlock better units as your commander progresses in rank with experience. Unlocking new units from the tech trees will cost experience points and silver.

There’s a third currency called Gold, that requires real money transaction. You can then use gold to convert into the other two currencies to progress quicker up the tiers provided your commander has the right rank. Therefore, one could argue that there are elements of pay to progress, just like all the other Wargaming titles out there.

The progression itself is pretty deep, which is great. Each empire has 10 tiers to progress towards, and loads of new units with new abilities to unlock and use in battles. This gives players a lot of diversity and strategy to play with. One can only hope that the matchmaking is fair, because if new players get paired with or against higher ranked players with better units, matches can be severely unbalanced.

It’s Not All About Killing

From a historical point of view, I like that at least Total War Arena is doing its best to offer an authentic Total War experience. Every unit has detailed descriptions of their usage in history, which is great for history buffs. Elsewhere, aesthetics are pretty good on the highest graphic settings, and the game does have an epic soundtrack especially in battles.

Ultimately, is Total War Arena fun to play? Indeed it is, because it combines the best elements of Total War strategy with the competitive mechanics and deep progression system we like from Wargaming. The game will probably be free to play at release, and right now in closed beta, a lot of these are subject to change in the near future. So let us know your thoughts, are you excited for Total War Arena?

World of Tanks vs World of Warships: Which One Suits You Better?

World of Tanks and World of Warships are both flagship titles from developers Wargaming. When it comes to authentic war PvP games featuring period-accurate vehicles and ships, no one does it better. So if you haven’t played either, you’re probably wondering which one suits you best. You’ve come to the right article. Here’s the run-down on what to expect from both games if you’re looking for a new PvP time filler.

The Basics

Before we get to the nitty-gritty, let’s go over what these games are all about. Simply put, you are the commander of a tank or warship. You have full access and control to your vehicles via the garage. You’ll be able to upgrade your tanks and ships with better armaments, weaponry and crew. When beginning, you’ll start with a select variety of Tier 1 vehicles, which begins your journey. The vehicles can be selected from a nation’s roster, so you’ll see choices such as Russia, China, Britain, United States and Germany. Expect to see period appropriate vehicles, from WWII to modern day. You will need to take part in PvP matches and depending on your performance, can earn varying amount of experience points and currency. These will be used for research to obtain higher tier vehicles, and the currency will be used to buy ammunition and vehicles too.

So far, pretty straightforward yes? Let’s go over battles. Standard mode PvP matches pits two teams of 15 (Tanks) or 12 (Warships) against each other. Your objective will be to destroy all players on the opposite side or capture their base to win. Both games now have a variety of modes with different objectives should you wish to break the monotony. Matches will be your primary source of daily fun to earn your XP to progress and research.

Gameplay

When it comes to gameplay, both games offers that unique style that other online games can’t match. You’re literally controlling and driving your tanks and ships in battle. Players are given full control over everything – from steering, aiming and pulling the trigger. It’s hugely satisfying. The one key difference between the two is the setting obviously. Tanks is primarily a land battle game, while Warships takes place on sea. Both have similar aspects within a match, such as earning points for spotting/scouting, long range artillery strikes and more.

Between the two, World of Tanks have been around longer, so expect it to have a larger player base. There’s plenty of players online no matter which region you select. This makes finding matches quick and easy. World of Warships is the newer title, and as such it’s still growing. However, Warships is the more refined of the two. Wargaming has taken all its experience from making Tanks and used it in Warships. As a result, the gameplay is a lot more modern, integrating player feedback from World of Tanks too. For example, in Warships, you get XP for capturing points too, which you don’t on Tanks.

Pacing is another key difference when it comes to these two. Matches on World of Tanks are meant to be fast paced and all action. Each match can vary for players, lasting the full 15 minutes or you could get knocked out in 3 minutes, at which point you simply head back to the garage and queue for another. World of Warships slows things down by just a hair. Navigating the seas for battles in large navy cruisers isn’t like riding a speedboat, and thus it feels authentic with its pacing. Of course there are faster, smaller ships for scouting too, but expect the pace of matches to be different here.

Weather Mechanics

What sets these two games further apart are the unique mechanics that affects matches too. In World of Warships, weather is a factor that plays a role in your success or failures in mid to high tier matches. Random cyclones and storms will be introduced at different points during a match, which reduces the spotting range of ships. It’s a pretty realistic feature that sadly, World of Tanks does not incorporate.

The Grind

If you’re not familiar with the two games, then pay attention to this point. Because there are so many Tanks and Ships to earn, research and buy beginning from the lowest tier to the top, it can take a long time to get there. Hence, the grind. Therefore, which game’s grind is more accommodating to new players?

In World of Tanks, the grind is very noticeable early on. The starting Tier 1 and Tier 2 tanks (stock tanks) are incredibly under-powered early on which is expected, and the XP gains comes painfully slow. Because of how matchmaking works, each match will pair you against tanks of different Tiers. So you can expect to be getting hammered an awful lot and you’ll be playing a lot of matches in the low tier brackets before you feel like you’re progressing or making a difference. Once you get to Tier 4 and move from a Light tank to a Medium tank, things get a lot better, but again, it takes a long time to get there.

In World of Warships, it’s easy to see that they want to make it a more streamlined experience for players coming from Tanks. The early tier and stock ships are actually competitive. Not all of them are of course, but the XP gains are a lot more friendly here, as compared to World of Tanks, there are multiple ways to gain them besides just spotting and damaging.

Social Aspects & Community

Community are important for online games like these, and both have social systems in place to foster your gaming groups and the wider player base. Both games have guild or clan systems where like minded players can join a company, where you can chat and form groups. You can also form a smaller 3-man platoon for matches, but unlike in World of Tanks, platoons in Warships do get its own separate chat box. This is a feature that the developers have added from player feedback.

As for the community itself, World of Tanks is the veteran of the two, but its community can vary. Frankly, it can get toxic sometimes, as there are plenty of elite players around that’s been playing for years since release. It can be hard for new players to integrate, but that’s entirely down to your mileage. And World of Warship’s community is still growing, and it’s a lot less hostile. On their good days however, both communities are welcoming and it’s rewarding to be a part of.

Graphics & Aesthetics

While World of Warships is the newer title, the graphics aren’t that far off from World of Tanks. Both run on a similar engine and the tanks, ships and map landscapes look good on any setting. As is the case with these games, it’s more about performance rather than looks. From a UI point of view, World of Tanks has the better layout – it’s easy to navigate and simple to understand. World of Warship’s UI is a little cluttered especially in the Shipyard (Garage), but you will get used to it over time.

Which One Should You Play?

Now that you know a little bit more about these games, which one should you play? If you prefer a faster-paced and chaotic land based battles, go with World of Tanks. If you like a slower, more strategic and laid back approach, World of Warships is the better option. It is also a lot more modern with its systems, such as offering players more ways to gain more XP and reducing the grinds somewhat. But ultimately, go with what you want and really, the correct answer is to just play both! It’s free anyway!

Wargaming Releases Gaming Center App To Launch All Its Games

MMO gurus Wargaming has released its brand new Gaming Center App. The App is a one-stop-shop client that can download and install all of the studio’s games.

Currently in Beta, players can now download the Gaming Center and launch their favorite Wargaming titles. The app supports World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Warships. For players who already have these games installed, the app will replace your regular launchers.

To do this, simply drag and drop the installation folder of a game when prompted. Players will see this option when launching the app for the first time. It will also be a very handy companion too as it can automatically download updates for the games.

Besides the being a convenience, the app will also be optimized for news. Players can see what’s the latest happenings in their games. You will also be able to look out for sales and other information before jumping into your games.

Personally, I love the convenience of having one central client to access multiple games from the same developer. It just gets rid of clutter and helps me jump into games much easier. You can download the Gaming Center App right here at this link. Do remember however, that it is still in Beta so expect it to undergo some changes from here on out.
