To celebrate its 15th anniversary, DOFUS is traveling through time and dimensions. First of all, in its current version, the MMO will be offering a two-part update – from October 1, players will cross over to the other side to explore a new temporary zone inspired by Ankama’s premises.

In the second phase, in late October, players will be able to take on the quests that inspired the name of this update: the Master of Dreams. This part will open the gates to a universe that is both dreamlike and nightmarish!
However, the event that will mark its 15th anniversary on September 24 and cause a wave of nostalgia among players of then and now is DOFUS Retro – a journey back in time allowing you to play the first version of DOFUS, simpler but still just as charming. Early fans already had the opportunity to play the “classic” version of DOFUS (1.29, for those in the know) on the servers Eratz and Henual. DOFUS Retro is kind of an update for this classic version. Not only will these servers be upgraded to the DOFUS Retro version, but players will also be able to check out a new old server in the shape of Nabur. For the occasion, a subscription pack will give the most die-hard fans a classic pet: Bilby.

Classic MMORPG DOFUS is celebrating its 15th anniversary this week. The festivities begins with the new Temporis server  launching today. As it sounds, these are DOFUS Celebrates 15th Anniversary With New Temporis Servers.

For this year’s third edition, we’re reinventing the Temporis servers and offering DOFUS players an all-new community and competitive experience to enjoy with their friends: joining one of the two enemy cities of Bonta or Brakmar to do battle with the rival nation. Only one of them will emerge victorious from this battle, which will last for several weeks and yield rewards for every member of the winning nation!

Throughout all of Ankama’s games, Bonta has always represented the forces of Good, while Brakmar is the city of Evil. Their rivalry has continued through the ages, from their founding right down to today, ranging from simple sporting competitions to bloody and devastating wars.

For the first time, the concept of alignment that we all know and love from roleplaying games will play a part in this event: players can join the Good or Evil nation… or even register as mercenaries to sell their services to the highest bidder, allowing them to earn additional rewards right away! Players will have individual and group objectives, and can check their own individual scores and their nation’s score on real-time leaderboards.
The event includes both PvM (Player vs. Monster) and PvP (Player vs. Player) components. Through PvM, players help their own city to advance, while PvP serves to slow the opposing city’s progress. When a player is defeated after an alignment battle, they are sent to the enemy faction’s prison with a real-time sentence. Players will have several different ways to get out, such as serving out their sentence, being freed by allies, or even bribing the guards! Finally, players will collect kamas, a virtual currency, throughout the adventure, which they can then donate to their city in order to contribute to the war effort and help their side come out on top.

Sometimes it’s nice to look back at the golden days of MMORPGs, when games like Dofus, Ragnarok and Ultima Online thrived.

Dofus is an isometric 3D turn-based MMORPG that’s been around since 2004. The game offers players a wide variety of class choices to pick from, and each are different and unique. The world is classic in style and substance too. So what makes this MMO hold it’s own after all these years? Here are my reasons why.

The Nostalgia of Text-Based Adventures

As the new hero in the World of the Twelve, your saga begins during a time when the world is in chaos. The six Primordial Dofus – dragon eggs of the gods – have been stolen, which is the cause of the destruction of the land and the incarnation of the evil that rises in place of peace and tranquility.

Your job in the long run is to bring back the stolen Dofus and restore balance in the world. At the same time, you need to build your reputation as a great warrior along the way. Before jumping into a new game, Dofus offers players a couple game modes which are classic and permadeath.

The game’s grand adventure is presented to you in text-based dialogues which are very well written and captures that feeling of an epic adventure. Both main the main story quests and side quests in Dofus rely on text-based storytelling, so expect to see plenty of dialogue from NPCs that have question marks over their heads.

The narrative is well paced and there are plenty of ways to advance character progression from level 1 to level 200. There’s PVP arenas to cater to competitive players and there are other PVE activities such as crafting which is very comprehensive.

Turn-Based Tile Battles

The combat system in Dofus is very straightforward and easy to learn. Battles against enemy creatures and NPCs are turn-based and take place on floor tiles that players can move their character into.

At the start of your turn, you will have a set amount of Movement Points and Action Points. Movement Points can be spent to move your character around the map, and tiles will turn green to indicate that you have enough to move. Action Points on the other hand are used to execute abilities and spells. Tiles will turn blue to indicate that you may cast your spells within that range, so make sure the enemy is within a blue tile.

At the start of your next turn, all movement and action points will be replenished. Overall the mechanics of Dofus’s turn-based combat is very tactical. It’s a lot of fun to play as strategizing your next move and deciding on which ability to cast will require sharp wits and knowledge of the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses.

Paywalled But Fair

The only con that Dofus has is also its biggest, that it needs a monthly subscription in order to unlock access to more gameplay. This includes content such as new zones, classes and other quality of life systems. While free to play players may think it’s harsh, the reality is that the model fits the game just fine.

Most of the recent MMORPGs in this decade do this too. And for Dofus to survive the next few years, they have to make a buck here and there. The only way to do this is of course, to monetize the content piece-meal. While some may disagree with it, the model makes perfect sense and I for one think it’s justified.

The Final Verdict

So is Dofus a good MMO to play despite its age? The answer will very much depend on what you’re looking for. If you want a fairly theme park MMO feel with lots of nostalgia, then yes. The game offers plenty of old MMO mechanics that feel just as fresh when played today. The combat system for one, is a great alternative to modern games. The turn and tile system offers strategy and can be intense. The story is also a winner, and what I love about it is it’s humorous and straight to the point. It’s almost as if you’re reading an adventure novel, only that you make the decisions.

So overall, I would highly recommend Dofus to anyone. Especially if you are new to MMORPGs and want a simple and easy game to learn the ropes.

Classic MMORPG DOFUS Introduces Another Fresh Start Progression Server

Baptized “Temporis”, two single-account servers are offering players of the DOFUS MMO a universe that’s been reset. As the name suggests, these servers will open for a limited period of time, in part to preserve the notion of freshness and renewal, and in part to provide a competitive framework for die-hard rankings fans.

First resources, first dungeons, first bosses! The players will be able to re-experience what it felt like those “first times”, and re-live them fully thanks to a revamped gameplay that favors immersion: more dynamic game mechanics, and simplified quests and professions. Rewards are up for grabs, and adventurers will earn them all the more easily if they unite in guilds and alliances. And to boost players even more, a leaderboard with several themes will be updated live.

The Temporis servers will be active from Wednesday, April 25 through Tuesday, July 31. Preregistering guarantees priority access, and gives seven days on the server free (from April 25 through May 1 only). After that, all you need is a DOFUS subscription to take a trip in the time machine.

“If only I’d known!” Who’s never dreamed of going back in time and getting a do-over knowing what you know now? This is what the Temporis servers set up recently by Ankama offer: re-live all the feelings of those first times in DOFUS, enjoy streamlined gameplay, and rely on cooperative gameplay to shoot for the top of the rankings. An initiative that the community clearly loved, because it took only 48 hours for the first server opened to fill up!

A Major Update Is Coming To DOFUS MMO

Rendezvous in early December for a new chapter in the history of the World of Twelve, the fictitious universe of Ankama’s game, DOFUS. After long plotting in the shadows, the Brotherhood of the Forgotten are now defying the gods in broad daylight. The players hold the future of the World of Twelve in their hands, just as Yugo and his friends do in season 3 of the series WAKFU.

With “The Towers of the Forgotten”, the newest DOFUS update is directly related to Season 3 of the series WAKFU. In addition to the depth of the story, this adventure will also allow players to discover 375 new spells, a new Dofus, and an advanced experience gauge in the Omega levels.

The MMO is taking transmedia even further, but it has not neglected pure gameplay in the slightest! Players will discover a renovated tactical mode that is more attractive and offers a more immersive experience, and a new method of rapid travel. The most experienced players will delight in the spell variants, which give them 375 new possibilities, and the arrival of the prestigious Omega Levels beyond level 200.

For more information on DOFUS, check out the official website here.

Dofus Steam launch is delayed:

MMORPG Dofus has been exclusively available through it’s official website for the past 12 years and developer Ankama Games has finally decided to end this; its been confirmed that the game will be released on Steam very soon.

It was originally due to be launched on November 7th but Ankama Games has revealed that they did not get the build approval from Valve; while the developer commented that they’re looking to release the game today, it’s still uncertain if this will happen.

Dofus will be released onto Steam in the near future however and the new Steam version will link to any existing accounts the player may have; it should be a smooth transition once the Steam store page has finally been launched. The game can still be played through the official client for Dofus.

The spiritual successor to this game, Wakfu, was released on Steam two years ago; Ankama Games has been hard at work over the years, supporting both their games and releasing regular new content for the MMORPGs which certainly keeps them still relevant and popular today.

While this will be the first time the game is available through any other PC gaming platforms, Dofus has been available on mobile devices for quite some time now. It’s one of the best MMO games available for iOS and Android devices however, it’s not identical to the PC version. There is no way to play any characters created on the PC version through this game and it’s been re-worked to be entirely based on touch controls.

The reach of Dofus has increased quite a bit this year and some fans are hopeful for a future console launch for this popular MMORPG; anyone looking for a new game of this genre should keep an eye on Steam to see when this game becomes available through the Steam platform.
