Eternal Magic is a classic style MMORPG by 101XP that’s just launched on Steam, having debuted to the public in 2019 on 101XP’s own gaming client. Available for all players for free, all you need to jump in is an account. Here’s some insight into what you can expect if you’re planning to check it out on Steam.

Eternal Magic Overview

Eternal Magic is a Chinese theme park MMORPG that’s brought to the West by Russian company 101XP, and the game has been free to play since launch. The game has 6 classes to pick from with basic trinity in-play and then you can further customize that with builds later on.  There’s no gender locking, but character appearance is very limited. Players can level up to the cap of 70.

Thoughts on Gameplay

When you start the game it literally takes off with the introduction to the story and combat, and you’re already in the thick of things within 5 minutes tops. You have two control options in Eternal Magic, one is your basic third person perspective and the second is a click to move option, which let’s you play it like a top down hack and slash ARPG or MOBA if you want to. I found myself liking the second a lot more, and being able to swap between the two freshened up my leveling experience jumping between questing and dungeons. Combat while look and feel dated, it works and I like the amount class customization you’re afforded to mix and match skills, passives and more to create your ideal play-style. Now going back to the leveling of experience, PvE questing didn’t really do a whole lot for me. Gaining character experience is very fast all the way up to level 40, from just following the main story-quest chain on top of killing any additional mobs required for objectives. Along the way, plenty of systems and I mean plenty, will start unlocking, and these range from the pet system which is pretty important for combat, in addition to other things I’ll talk about later on. If you’re not having fun experimenting with new class skills, pet  abilities and builds, then it’s going to be quite a snooze fest because the overall difficulty in PvE isn’t much of a challenge. What also doesn’t help is that the overall story, narratives and characters are generic and bland, with some obvious localization errors in the dialogue translations and the way it’s formatted.

What Content To Expect

In the content department, you have your usual mix of PvE and PvP. I did say the questing was bland and uninteresting, with little or no challenge, but things do pick up once you start unlocking the group content. Players get access to dungeons at level 18 and these aren’t bad at all, with multiple boss fights and mechanics that can hurt you if, you didn’t learn anything about your class and how it plays while leveling. There’s dungeon quests, plenty of loot and xp and of course, more challenge overall. On the landscape, there’s World Bosses that spawn in each zone and players within the level bracket can teleport around to take them down, preferably in a group or with guild mates because these things can hurt you real good.

For PvP, Eternal Magic has multiple modes like GvG, battlegrounds and MOBA style of modes. There’s 4 of them that you can queue for once unlocked at level 35, and each are 10v10 with varying objectives like point control and capture the flag. I wish I could tell you more about them, but unfortunately, the bloody queues never pop, at least if you’re queuing solo. On the EU server and at peak times, I could sit there for over an hour, and see people begging for more players to queue in chat, but nothing happens.

Progression Systems

Progression-wise, honestly everything on offer feels like a hodgepodge concoction. There’s a quite lot of stuff thrown at you, and I’m trying to identify the real important things to focus on, versus the fluff. So let’s talk about the main things. The pet progression system is pretty key, because they will fight alongside you and earn XP, which gives you access to their skills and some of em are pretty damn powerful, good enough to melt bosses. You can collect more pets, upgrade their level and quality, give them equipment, and send them on passive time-based expedition missions for XP and treasures, a kin to something like WoW’s Garrison system. For gear, you have an upgrade system to increase an item’s star level that is free to do below level 60, and it appears to require materials and may have a chance to fail after that safety threshold, that’s just my guess though, since we can’t progress beyond level 60. Then there’s gear enchanting, where you spend either currency or resources to upgrade a specific stat. And rounding it is the rune system for socketing in gear pieces, and spirit system. Elsewhere, you have a basic crafting system for gear and resources, a guild system for contribution points and other buffs, the rest are, somewhat typical of a free to play eastern MMO.

Monetization and Cash Store

And of course, we can’t end this without talking about the game’s monetization systems. As mentioned earlier, Eternal Magic will be free to play when it launches, so there is a cash shop and its contents and influence within the game is a mixed bag. One hand you have costumes that offers flat stats for your character, for example chest pieces and bikini tops for females offers a +30 to Strength, Agility and Intelligence, while the other cosmetics are just that – costumes to show off. In the other sections of the store like Mounts, Consumables and Gifts, you’ll largely find convenience type stuff like faster mounts, pet items, upgrade items and you can even buy in-game gold and silver to purchase equipment and goods from vendors, and I have no idea if they’ll change things for the game’s official launch and from where it stands, you could argue that it’s leaning toward pretty advantageous and the only thing left that I haven’t seen is how much the premium currency called Elirs costs for real money.

Players in the open beta can only level up to the cap of 60, but will be higher at 70 when it goes live. Additionally, there’s no restrictions on what content you can do in both PvE and PvP, which Eternal Magic has in abundance.

Thoughts on Gameplay

When you start the game it literally takes off with the introduction to the story and combat, and you’re already in the thick of things within 5 minutes tops. If you’re tracking all the latest in MMORPGs this September, you’ll know it’s going to be a busy month ahead. With plenty of games launching, scheduling beta tests and dropping content, it can be hard to track – and much of that is already happening. Worry not, here’s the top MMORPG highlights happening this very week.

Astellia Name Reservations and Download Is Live

Korean MMORPG Astellia is ready to rock and roll. Launching on the 27th this month, Legendary Founders Pack owners can already begin reserving character names. The Legendary Pack costs $99.99 and there’s only a week or so left to grab one before it goes away entirely. But, if you have yet to download the new game client and to install the game, you can do so here. Astellia will allow you to reserve a total of one character name before the the first headstart on the 20th. However, you can still play around with the character creator and save as many customization templates into the beauty album as you wish.

Caravan Stories Launches in NA Later Today

For PlayStation 4 users in North America, a brand new MMORPG comes your way later today. Caravan Stories is a popular Japanese JRPG that doubles up as an MMO. In the world of Iyarr, you can play as one of the charming races available and adventure through the land while recruiting a vast amount of beasts and heroes as companions. They will make up the bulk of your party for the game’s real time party-based combat, which takes place on the landscape, in dungeons and in raids. There’s PvP duels, a guild system and a co-op mode as well, making the online experience with friends more enjoyable. Caravan Stories can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store and the file size is around 13 gigs. It’s free to play and has optional micro-transactions. No PS+ is required.

Eternal Magic Enters CBT Week 2

Upcoming theme park MMORPG Eternal Magic launched its CBT last week, and is now entering week 2. All players with early access packs can jump in and level up to the soft cap of 50. All content including dungeons, world bosses and random battlegrounds are unlocked for both NA and EU servers. Additionally, CBT players will get a daily allowance of the Elirs in-game premium currency to spend on cosmetic and boosts. Needless to say, all of this and progress overall will be wiped after CBT in preparation for an open beta. The CBT will end on September 15th.

Final Fantasy XIV Releases More Tales from the Shadows

Final Fantasy XIV players are still euphoric and rightly so, from the recently released Shadowbringers expansion. Toward the end of August, Square Enix began publishing a series of short stories called Tales from the Shadows. These shorts follows a perspective from certain main characters in the Shadowbringers saga. With obvious spoilers contained within, they offer plenty of insight into the mind-set of key characters leading up to the major plots in the expansion. To-date, two stories out of four are already available and this week we got the third. Read it here.

Eternal Magic is an upcoming MMORPG by 101XP that’s currently in open beta. Available for all players with an early access pack, the CBT will run until September 15th. Having played it for four days, here’s some key thoughts about the five most important aspects of Eternal Magic as an MMORPG.

What Is Eternal Magic?

Eternal Magic is a chinese theme park MMORPG that’s brought to the West by Russian company 101XP, and the game will be free to play at launch, with an Open Beta planned some time after we’re done with the CBT. There are other versions that can be played right now if you don’t want to wait around for access or get a guaranteed pack, and I’m not quite sure about the key differences between the existing one in the east versus what I’m playing now, so I can only share what I’ve experienced with the Western version so far. The game has 6 classes to pick from with basic trinity in-play and then you can further customize that with builds later on.  There’s no gender locking, but character appearance is very limited. And players in the CBT can only level up to the cap of 50, but will be higher at 70 when it goes live.

Gameplay

Content

For PvP, Eternal Magic will launch with multiple modes like GvG, battlegrounds and MOBA, but in the CBT I’ve only seen classic battle grounds so far.

For gear, you have an upgrade system to increase an item’s star level that is free to do below level 60, and it appears to require materials and may have a chance to fail after that safety threshold, that’s just my guess though, since we can’t progress beyond level 50 in CBT.

In the other sections of the store like Mounts, Consumables and Gifts, you’ll largely find convenience type stuff like faster mounts, pet items, upgrade items and you can even buy in-game gold and silver to purchase equipment and goods from vendors, and I have no idea if they’ll change things for the OBT or launch and from where it stands, you could argue that it’s leaning toward pretty advantageous and the only thing left that I haven’t seen is how much the premium currency called Elirs costs for real money. You can’t buy them in the CBT, but you’re allocated a large sum daily for being in the CBT, which won’t matter because progress will be wiped once it’s over. The question remains, will it be pay to win? Perhaps yes and perhaps no, until we can actually get to the cap at level 70 and see just how the cash store influences the end-game, it’s too early be conclusive, so this one needs to be revisited at a later date.

MOBA mode, private mansion parties, in-game weddings, guild wars – just to name a few. It isn’t short on features and content to say the least.

The CBT will run until September 15th, and players can still get in on the act and play on two servers currently open, one each for North America and Europe. Players with Early Access Packs are guaranteed access to the Closed Beta. If you don’t already own an EAP, consider purchasing any of the packs to gain access to the game on September 4. In addition to participation in the Closed Beta, holders of the packs will also receive a 3 days head start as well as lots of useful and unique items in Open Beta.

No progress made during the CBT will carry forward to any future tests, so expect all characters to be wiped. Additionally, while players will need to pay for guaranteed access into the CBT today, the game will be fully free to play when it launches.

September is shaping up to be a fantastic month for MMORPG players. There’s plenty of titles hitting early access, closed betas or launching in full. Below are the top 5 MMORPG games launching in September 2019 that we’re hyped about.

1) Eternal Magic MMORPG Closed Beta Test

First up on September 4th, is the beginning of the closed beta test for upcoming free to play MMORPG, Eternal Magic. Eternal Magic from the outside looks like your typical run-of-the-mill classic theme park fantasy MMORPG, and that’s because most of what the game offers is exactly that. There are a few interesting features perhaps, for example, while the game caters to both PvE and PvP, it’s the player versus player game modes that are receiving a lot of marketing push.

This MMO will feature 80 player Guild Wars, open world pk-ing in certain zones and a MOBA mode, which lets you plays exactly like a game of DOTA or League of Legends, and that’s possible because Eternal Magic does have a click to move built in. There will be no region blocks for this one, it’s made in Asia and this version of the game is being published in Eastern Europe with servers for players in NA and EU at launch. So, how do you get into the CBT? For guaranteed access on the fourth of September, you’ll need to pick up a Gift Pack from the official website, and the cheapest one costs $15 USD.

2) Caravan Stories PS4 NA Launch

On the 10th of September, PlayStation 4 players in North America can get their hands on Caravan Stories, a free to play anime-inspired MMORPG that’s well received in Japan, where the game was made. Caravan Stories puts players in the vast world of Iyar and players must recruit heroes, tame monster companions, and beat back the threat that endangers the world. To do this, you’ll engage in real time party based combat, and putting together the ideal party composition, consisting of your recruited NPCs and pets will be key to deciding the outcome of PvE battles, dungeons and raids.

You’ll also need to make sure that your caravan is well stocked and decorated to your liking, because that’s the key to all of this, your caravan serves as your mobile home base and it travels to the world with you, in addition to crafting stations, armaments for defenses and more. Caravan Stories is a unique MMORPG exclusive to the PS4, and from what I hear it has plenty of JRPG influences when it comes to the narrative and characters. If you want to jump into Caravan Stories on the 10th, simply look it up in the PSN store on launch day, and again it’s free to play.

3) Population Zero Closed Beta

On September 19th, survival MMO Population Zero will be having its Closed Beta test phase. Population Zero puts hundreds of players on the newly discovered planet Kepler, and your job is to colonize it, if you can. The game features an action combat system, in-depth crafting and building, research and a class progression system with perks that many RPG players will be familiar with. Unlike other survival MMOs out there, this one will be narrative driven with factions you can join. The wildlife is organic and will fight back, whilst the environment in general reacts to the collective behavior of the inhabitants, made possible thanks to the complex algorithms in-place.

It sounds like an ambitious MMO, and right now there are many comparisons to games like No Man’s Sky, or Subnautica either due to how to game looks or based on its systems, so we shall see how they stand out from the crowd within this saturated survival genre space once CBT hits. How do you get into CBT? Firstly you can sign up for an account on the website, and at random you may be selected to get in. Keep an eye out for social media raffles and other giveaways too. For a guaranteed spot in the closed beta, players can purchase founders packs with the cheapest being $10 USD for guaranteed CBT access plus future invites to all further tests until launch.

4) Astellia Launch

September 27th is the official launch date for Astellia, a Korean MMORPG brought to the west by Barunson and EA. Astellia is another one of the new wave of Asian MMORPGs that are doing the buy to play method, which seems to be making some sort of a comeback. Astellia is a theme park MMO in which players will acquire Astells, which are mini-companions that you can summon to fight alongside you as they earn XP and level up, and they have unique abilities and combos to compliment the player characters class.

While there are dungeons and even a tri-faction RvR PvP mode, there are no traditional raids in Astellia, and there is the dreaded dungeon ticket system here. The one thing the developers promise however is that the western version will be free of the pay to win systems that exist in the east, and will let players Play to Win instead. That means no cash shop shenanigans, and interestingly, the developers are even undoing many of the Asian MMO tropes that the game launched with in Korea, such as gender locking of classes.

5) ArcheAge Unchained Launch

On the very last day of September, we have of course, the launch of ArcheAge Unchained. Unchained is the new buy to play version of this sandpark Korean MMORPG that in recent times, hasn’t had the best of reputations when it comes claims of pay to win, and this is one way that Trion, Gamigo and XL games are looking to fix that. Unchained will mirror the legacy servers in terms of gameplay and content, with the biggest difference being the monetization systems. For example, there’s no Apex, no patron status, no Lootboxes, no buying tax certificates for housing, no buying labor points and there’s a restriction on the number of alt accounts a player can have.

All of this sounds good on paper but there’s a long way to go before we see if they’ll keep it that way, or not. To get in Unchained, players will need to buy one of three packages available right now, with the cheapest coming in at $26 USD. All packages will allow for early character creation and name reservation which you should make use of if you want to spend more time in-game and less time in the queue on launch day. You can expect one to two servers for both NA and EU at launch. Also important to note, in a recent stream, the developers have confirmed that ArcheAge Unchained will be coming to Steam, and the global client will be the 64bit version.
