Bioware’s free to play MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, aka SWTOR, has released a dev post this week detailing a new feature coming to the game with the next expansion, which are Legendary Items.

Come update 7.0, which will be the Legacy of the Sith expansion, Legendary Items will offer players a new way to customize the play style of your character. Legendary Items are Earpieces and Implants that have a Legendary bonus on them. This bonus can only appear on these items. Previously, you would see these types of bonuses when you collected set bonuses, which were previously gained by collecting two, four, or six pieces of specific armor.

Starting in 7.0, you now only gain these bonuses on Legendary Items and not sets. By having these appear on single item slots, you will have greater customization of the bonuses you receive. We will be able to provide a broader range of options, including some older fan favorites. When we get closer to testing out Legendary Items, we will be asking the community about their favorite set bonuses from previous game updates, and incorporating many of them into the initial 7.0 batch of Legendaries. More on that to come!

Players will be able to equip two Legendary Items at a time. Each piece of Legendary gear will have a unique effect that will enhance and improve various playstyles, and affect your stats in the same manner that gear does today. Implants will have a greater focus on utility improvements, while Earpieces will be more skewed towards improving Combat Style power and effectiveness. No more needing to stack multiple pieces of gear in order to get a set bonus’s effect since it will be rolled into a single Legendary Item!

These items will be obtained at a lower item rating (non-max level) and can be upgraded to higher levels. Essentially, you can increase a Legendary’s item rating over time as they do not need to be replaced like current gear does.

As for current gear, set bonuses as they stand today will be gradually phased out. If you are a returning player, you will find that your current set bonuses will be deactivated upon reaching level 76. Note the stats on those pieces of gear will still be applied to your character, only the set bonuses will cease functioning at that time. Rather than having to collect up to six pieces of armor for a Legendary affix, you can focus on obtaining one or two. Being freed from the restriction of set bonuses will also allow you the freedom to mix and match armor to your heart’s content, allowing you to customize your characters more than ever before and without losing the effects and abilities you were accustomed to having previously.

When it comes to narrative content in MMORPG games, story-telling is almost seen as secondary to raiding, PvP and other in-game activities that players consider more important. There’s not much to dispute there, but story is in many ways just as important for those looking for a well rounded MMORPG experience. Some games get it right when it comes to story. NPC characters, world-building and the reason for caring about the game world you’re in are difficult things to get right, especially for MMO audiences around the globe. And that’s why for example, in Eastern MMOs it isn’t as prevalent or even as good as some from the west. It all comes down to demographics. Having said that if story content is important to you, here are the top 5 MMORPG you can play in 2021 that has awesome story content.

World of Warcraft

From its humble beginnings as an RTS franchise and then into the juggernaut that is World of Warcraft, this game has always been about its narrative. What happens when Humans suddenly come up against an unknown Orc race from a different world, and must now fight for survival? Its origins has since evolved so much that there’s been almost 20 years of story-telling in the world of Azeroth, that still continues to grow to this day.

Not only has the world expanded, but the two factions, Alliance and Horde, has seen their overarching narratives evolve into something bigger. Add in all plot from the various expansions over the years – The Burning Legion, The Lich King, The Old Gods – and you have a recipe for fans of the World of Warcraft to keep coming back for more. It’s shame if you haven’t been there from the very beginning, but it’s not too late to still experience all that story content that WoW has to offer, alongside its raiding scene, which is arguably the best part of the game today.

Final Fantasy 14

This Japanese MMORPG has a lot going for it, especially considering it’s disastrous start to life under it’s previous iteration, now known as the 1.0 version. Essentially, Final Fantasy 14 is a story heavy game. The entire MMO design revolves around players needing to progress the main story. Doing so will offer lucrative amounts of experience points. The main story also is required to unlock a majority of the dungeons and other in-game activities. Not a lot of MMORPGs out there actually do this – lock content behind the main story.

While that may seem draconian and traditional, is the story worth playing through at all? The answer is yes. The main quest chains in A Realm Reborn has all the hallmarks of a Final Fantasy game. It has a powerful narrative, featuring likeable characters and a plot that’s worthy of an offline RPG game. On top of that, a lot of the main story quests features long and elaborate cinematic cutscenes that Final Fantasy players are familiar with. It’s almost non MMO in style, but it’s a pure joy if you enjoy a good story.

The writing is decent and while dialogue can be a hit or miss due to translations, it still offers something for everyone. Outside of the main stories, there are class stories for every profession in game too. These can be picked up every five levels and features a lot of backstory on why the class you’ve chosen matters. Overall, there’s a lot of good story locked away in Final Fantasy behind that monthly subscription, if you can afford it.

Guild Wars 2

When it comes to episodic content in MMORPG titles, Guild Wars 2 is right up there with the best. See, at launch Personal Stories were the game’s main story quest chain, and is character based. They are unlocked every few levels, and will differ based on some of the character creation options that players picked at the beginning. What’s great about the stories are that it takes place in unique dialogue cut scenes, with fully voiced characters and animations. To top it off, the actual story isn’t too shabby for a fantasy MMO. Spoiler alert, you’re discovering things about yourself, and find out that a dragon is becoming a threat to the world, and must spend the later levels uniting the various races of Tyria to fight as one. It may seem cliché, but the story really builds up and it’s hard not to get invested in it, thanks to the world and character building.

But in recent times, Guild Wars 2 has taken it’s story telling content to greater heights. The Heart of Thorns expansion in 2015 raised the bar with it’s narrative, and changed the way how plot is delivered to the player. Cut scenes and dialogue now take place in the actual game world, and is more immersive than ever. The story has also gotten better, and now carries over into the Living World Season stories, which serves as a massive continuation of the game’s main story campaign.

Outside the actual main story, the world itself does a lot of cohesive story telling through world events that ties into the zones that it takes place in. Some of the Personal Stories in the base game will even reflect in changes to the later zones, which is really cool. Overall, if you’re looking for a good MMO with a decent story to play through, look no further than Guild Wars 2.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

SWTOR may have garnered a reputation for being one of the most restrictive free to play mmos, but it does do one thing very right. And boy do they get their story telling right. SWTOR is an immersive narrative driven game, and right from the get go, players will be sucked in to one of the class stories that lasts all the way to level 50, for absolutely free.

The writing is top notch and typical Bioware. Expect to see loads of cutscenes, and that’s not just for the main class stories. In fact, every side quests large or small has it’s own cutscene and is 100% fully voiced by some of the best in the industry.

What’s great about the game’s use of story in the main class quests is that there are decisions that absolutely matter. Evil choices gain you alignment to the Dark side, while Good hearted decisions do the same for the Light side. The game’s companion system is also fantastic, allowing you to develop relationships with the companions that follow you around.

It’s in the post level 50 class stories that SWTOR truly shines in these days. The latest expansions for example, is chock full of cinematic cutscenes that absolutely brings out the best of Bioware’s storytelling. While you’ll need a subscription to play these, the older class quests are free for all and still excellent. So if you need a star was game fix that has great narratives and plot, then jump into to Star Wars the Old Republic.

Secret World Legends

This MMORPG is absolutely unique, and it’s entire existence revolves around the game’s immense story telling. Secret World Legends is set in today’s world. Modern day, contemporary, and what makes it special is that in it, all conspiracy theories, myth and urban legends are true. Players select from one of three secret society factions, the Illuminati, Templars or Dragon.

And right from the beginning, the game pulls no punches in throwing mind bending narratives right at you. The writing is excellent, questioning all that you know regarding the world and what is real and fiction. The dead walk the earth, Cthulhu is alive and well, mummies are cropping up, and somewhere in Europe, Transylvania is a real place. It’s a hot pot of mixed narratives that are combined and delivered in immersive ways. All quest givers engage you in a long cinematic dialogues, and for the most part, say witty things and make references to today’s pop culture.

It’s a unique take on MMOs and it’s a shame that the game is suffering from lack of content and players, even after its relaunch in 2017. However as a free title, it’s still worth checking out if you’re hunting down an MMORPG with a unique take on story telling.

Welcome to May 2021, we’re almost half way through the year and so far it’s been a decent past few months for MMORPGs, which saw some major releases like Elder Scrolls Online’s Flames of Ambition DLC, and Guild Wars 2’s Chapter 4: Judgement – the finale of the Icebrood Saga.

As for this month, there are a few exciting titles coming out, while others are releasing beta tests for their games. Here’s a quick look at what MMORPGs are headed our way this month.

Bless Unleashed PC: The Final Beta (May 13-17)

It’s finally happening folks, the return of Bless to the PC platform. While the 2018 version was rightfully shunned by majority of players, Bless Unleashed is a different beast that seeks to repair that damage. From the two previous test we’ve had on Steam thus far, it’s easy to see the just how much has changed. The combat has truly transformed into full action, the gameplay feels much better, and plenty of quality of life systems has been added to make open-world adventuring feel smoother and cohesive. The final test is free for everyone to partake in, and can be found on Steam.

Star Wars the Old Republic ( May 4th)

For every Star Wars fan, May 4th is an auspicious date, and in the Old Republic MMORPG, it is indeed tradition to celebrate in-game. SWTOR has just launched a brand new story update, complete with a new Flashpoint and a battle pass system to boot, so all round it’s an exciting time to jump back in. This May the 4th, all players logging in will receive a free Astromech Droid mini-pet, in addition to getting a double XP buff which lasts for two weeks. That means it’s a great time to level up new classes and characters.

Let’s take a look at some of the best MMO towns, hubs and cities when it comes to offering player convenience. For starters, we have nominations for the Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars the Old Republic, Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Rings Online.

Elder Scrolls Online, Alinor

First up is the Elder Scrolls Online, which has plenty of marvelous, looking alliance cities, but nothing captivated me more than the city of Alinor in Summerset, which was introduced in 2018’s Summerset Chapter. Why are my characters parked here all the time? You guessed it, it’s convenient for a multitude of reasons and for my personal needs. This little area in the bottom corner of the city is where all the crafting stations are placed in a horsehoe shape, and of course you have the daily task boards inside. So my usual routine is to pick them, up, make the rounds to craft what’s required, and then the drop off point for deliveries is just right outside to the left, and it barely takes 30 seconds to get there.

For banking, I’ve made it easier for myself having purchased the mobile banking NPC, but for those who haven’t, a short travel up the stairs north and you’ll reach the bank, and guild traders too for your market-place needs. It also helps that the Wayshrine is really close by, and Summerset itself isn’t too big of an island so you can head out of the city and go kill some daily World Bosses or get rid of some geysers if they pop up. All round, Alinor is my current favorite city hub in The Elder Scrolls Online right now until I find something better.

Guild Wars 2, Lily Elon Lounge

In Guild Wars 2, it was really hard to pick a location because one of the core tenants of the game is player convenience, meaning most places are usually fantastically designed with the players in-mind. For starters, every major city of the game’s main races offers everything you need, and while large, traveling around using waypoints or mounts these days makes it easier, but Guild Wars 2 does have these things called lounge passes, that takes you to an exclusive location which offers crafting stations, banking, economy, vendors and more, all in a small enclosed space with literally no travel downtime.

Out of all these premium mini-hubs and lounges, my go-to location is the Lily of the Elon, a small lounge located on an artificial island south of the free city of Amnoon, in the path of fire expansion. The design is circular, with vendors, banks and auction house on the lower outer level, crafting stations on the first level, and the mystic forge on the outer third level. Not only is the lounge great for the basic stuff, but it’s also convenient for getting to the content. You have all the crystal oasis bounty boards within, plus the lounge is close to the Amnoon city events, especially the casino coin collection one that leads to the Choya piñata, which drops an item that will make you rich. Alas, the only way to get in here to my knowledge, is you have to have purchased the deluxe or ultimate edition of the path of fire expansion in order to receive the invitation item, that teleports you to the Lily Elon whenever clicked.

SWTOR, The Fleet

In a galaxy far, far away, the choice for the most convenient hub is an extremely easy one. If you haven’t guessed it already, it’s the Fleet for your chosen faction. Both the Republic and Sith Empire fleets are pretty much designed similarly, with there being one massive level you’ll zone into from your ship’s hangar bay or from the fleet pass, and you can make your way around the fleet clock-wise or anti-clockwise to get to what you need. The fleet has pretty much everything on the main level, and it’s conveniently placed in sections that you can easily see on the map, so there’s no getting lost.

Taking the elevator down you’ll get to the another level or rep vendors and other traders, there’s the group content bay to pick up FP quests and more, and the inter-ship travel is also available for other content. Your own ship and stronghold aka housing in SWTOR are decent shouts but as SWTOR lets you place mailboxes, banks and auction terminals within them so you never really have to set foot on the fleet if all you need to do are just the basic things, which is super convenient.

LOTRO, Bree

The town of Bree is probably the most popular spot for majority of players, doesn’t matter if you’re a new player under level 30 or an end-game player, everything leads to Bree, and Bree leads out to everywhere quite literally. The town’s design is neat, and split into three distinct sections. You have the west part of the town which has its own stable-master that connects to a good variety of other cities, towns and hubs, and there’s also a bank and some crafting stations nearby. You’ll  also find a festival horse taking you to the horse-fields when in season. The North and mid-section is really for the RPers, musicians, and when the anniversary festival rolls around, the fireworks show. You’ll also find the prancing pony and a stage for bands here.

The middle section is home to the Bree crafting hall and it’s probably the best place to craft besides Esteldin or wherever else the new crafting guild masters are, simply due to the fact that the bank and auctioneer are just a turn away and you can grab whatever you need to carry on crafting or clear your bags. The southern part is the Uber heaven, because the stablemaster connects to every important location known to man, hobbit, dwarf and elf. It’s also got another bank and auctioneer across the street, some more crafting stations and the relic masters for your LI weapons. All round, the town of Bree has something for everyone of all levels, and it’s not a nightmare to navigate on foot or steed.

Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) has launched on Steam this month, 9 years after the MMORPG’s launch. For those that don’t know, SWTOR is a free to play MMO with an optional subscription, and former paying players are known as preferred. Last month, BioWare announced that it would be making some changes to the the limitations that non-subscribers would an encounter in-game. Below are the changes coming.

Increased Credit Cap

Long gone are the days where you could buy a gallon of Bantha milk for five credits. Initially when SWTOR developed its Free-to-Play and Preferred models, a cap of 200,000 credits and 350,000 respectively seemed like a fair amount. Over the years, it’s become a simple truth that those credit amounts don’t buy what it used to though. As the game has grown, so has the economy. Taking this into account, SWTOR will be raising the credit cap of both Free-to-Play and Preferred members to 1,000,000 credits.

Good or Bad: Obviously fantastic change for non-subscribers, as having more credits on you goes a long way to helping players. Prior to this it can be annoyingly tedious to withdraw bit by bit just to use the AH. It almost felt like going to an ATM machine IRL.

Extra Quickbar (Hotbar)

Quickbars are another feature that has been limited between the various account types. Currently Subscribers have six available to them, while Preferred have four and Free-to-Play accounts have just two. When this system was initially designed, only four at most were available. Keeping this in mind, SWTOR will be adding an additional Quickbar for both Preferred and Free-to-Play accounts – increasing the number to five and three respectively. With this addition, players will be able to have more abilities, Mounts, and Mini-pets available to them for immediate use.

Good or Bad: This is good news. Quickbars are a necessity as SWTOR does have quite a number of class skills and other executables we love putting on these bars. Limiting them in the first place came across as greedy – not many F2P MMORPG games at the time locked you out of quickbars.

Medical Probe and Quick Travel

Lastly, there are changes to Medical Probes and Quick Travel. Medical Probes allow a character to revive where they died instead of recovering at a Medical Station. Quick Travel allows characters to immediately travel to a discovered point on their current planet. Both of these features have been primarily available to Subscribers, while Preferred and Free-to-Play players could only obtain consumable versions via the Cartel Market. Both of these features are being removed from the Cartel Market and every player will be able to revive or Quick Travel where applicable.

Good or Bad: Decent, as this is more of a quality of life improvement but it’s not exactly game changing for F2P players.

Are These Enough?

It’s a good first step that BioWare is slowly starting to ease off on these limitations. Is it too late however, considering how the MMORPG landscape has evolved? Today you’ll find many free titles or event Buy to Play titles that ignore these petty limitations altogether. What SWTOR can do is look at the game from a new player perspective in 2020 and evaluate what can make the entire experience better. One way to do so is to make the first couple of expansions free for preferred players. That means if you’ve spent any form of money in-game at all, you’re preferred and eligible. This makes sense as the game will be getting a brand new expansion this September, and might give new players a taste of what to expect in the meantime to justify a subscription.

While we’re all stuck at home and gaming, we could be missing out on some sweet XP buffs and more that some of these MMORPGs have prepared for us. Here’s a quick guide to all the known leveling and XP buffs in MMORPGs happening right now!

World of Warcraft

The Shadowlands alpha is all the rage these days, as Blizzard gears up for a Q4 expansion launch. However, there’s still plenty to do over on the retail version of WoW, thanks to the Winds of Wisdom and Impressive Influence buffs, both running until the 18th of May.

Winds of Wisdom offers 100% bonus XP for all characters, while Impressive Influence gives out 100% bonus reputation. Make sure to use this to get your reps up for flying in BFA, in addition to leveling an alt to the top before the new leveling system changes things forever!

Guild Wars 2

Meanwhile in ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2, the game is currently welcoming back players with free offerings of its current Living World story episodes, which you can read all about here.

For buffs, currently, players can enjoy an additional 30% Magic Find, 50% XP from all sources, 30% WvW Reward Track progress, and 30% PvP Reward Track progress. This covers almost every game activity in Guild Wars 2 for PvE and PvP players, so be sure to make full use of it.

Star Wars the Old Republic

May the 4th has come and gone, but worry not SWTOR players, because the game’s XP buff runs until June! From now until June 16th, BioWare is handing out Double XP for players in-game, coming from all sources that offers XP. This includes Valor, Renown and more. This is a really good time to finish any remaining class stories you have left untouched, and get your characters to the current Onslaught expansion, with a new level cap of 75.

Lord of the Rings Online

In LOTRO, the game has turned on a weekend XP buff, but for crafting professions. Between now and the 10th of May, all players will receive a 25% boost to crafting XP for Tailors, Metalsmiths, Weaponsmith, Scholar, Woodworker and Cooks. Be sure to take advantage of this to max the crafting tiers of your mains and alts for the new Guild Mastery reputation items and tiers that you’ll want to grind for some useful benefits at the current LOTRO end-game.

RuneScape

For RuneScape players, there’s a Double XP event beginning today, Friday 8th May. While the event is active, all players will receive 48hrs of double XP that applies to everything thing in-game, except the recently released Archeology skill.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the armistice that marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, World of Tanks is introducing a brand-new PvE mode: Road to Berlin  running from May 4th to 18th.

Tankers will have the option to join one of 5 different Units (Soviet, American and British). Each unit consists of three middle-tier vehicles of the same type and has a set of Combat Boosts, such as Airstrike, Artillery Strike, Special Shells, etc., to fight with enemies more efficiently. Once a player has made their choice, they will team up with four other commanders to take on AI-controlled adversaries.

Each battle has 5 sequential objectives, or Battle Missions, where players will need to harness a variety of battle tactics, from capturing to defending special zones to toppling the opponents and finally defeating enemy commanders.

Battles will take place on four maps that have been crafted specifically for Road to Berlin, including the brand-new Berlin map. Three of them will be available from the start; however, the Berlin map will only become available from late into the evening of May 8th, the time when the ceasefire became official 75 years ago.

“The end of the Second World War in Europe is a key part of global history,” states Max Chuvalov, Publishing Director, World of Tanks. “By creating this mode, we intended to remind people all around the world of this anniversary.”

As players progress in the mode, there are a variety of rewards to unlock, including Decals, Bounty Equipment and a special Medal. Those who can prove themselves in the mode, will be rewarded with the grand prize: the IS-2 with spaced armor.
