Legends of Aria is a modern classic game, developed by Citadel Studios, and if you love old school MMORPGs then you may want to check it out. Inspired by classic sandbox titles like Ultima Online and RuneScape, Legends of Aria is available on Steam and will be going free to play with the New Dawn update in November 2019.  For new players thinking of checking it out when F2P arrives, here’s some thoughts on whether or not this sandbox MMORPG is worth a look.

Authentic Sandbox MMORPG Experience

Undoubtedly the first thing you’ll notice is the look and feel of the game that screams old school. Get used to that word. Legends of Aria is a top down MMORPG, and you’ll have to use your mouse to move. Plenty of systems also aren’t the conventional things you see today in modern MMORPGs. For example, the UI. The interface is simplistic and overall there is very little hand holding. Outside the tutorial, all you get is a magical orb that you can interact with to get hints about what to do and where to go, but that’s it. The game is open ended so players are free to begin exploring, killing or crafting.

Classless and Huge Amounts of Progression

Legends of Aria lets you pick starter archetypes at the character creation screen, but this isn’t permanent. It gives you starting stats for the type of class you envision to play, like Fighters and Wizards, but once in-game you can branch out and become whatever you want. For progression, it’s going to be the number one thing you’ll be grinding to progress. The game has close to 100 skills that you get better in the more you do it. There’s Blacksmithing to make better armor and weapons, Lumberjack to gather wood, Cooking for food, and more. Players will need the appropriate tools to begin harvesting and crafting, and progress made in these skills happen over time so it’s not a quick and easy process. While that’s for crafting, player skills and abilities work the same. Wearing Light Armor when you’re out killing wolves increases the Light Armor skill, making you more proficient. This happens for everything you have equipped.

Classic Combat, But Needs Work

Combat is paramount for MMORPGs today. It’s by far the thing that players will be doing the most. Unlike modern games where combat systems are flashier and fast, Legends of Aria is the complete opposite. If you come across Giant Rats, Skeletons or Bandits in the world, you can kill them for skill experience. But it’s not as simple as running up to them and pressing your attack skills. Firstly, you have to get into combat stance with the A key. Assuming  you’re in range, then and only then can you fire off the skills on your hotbar, that changes depending on what weapon you have on. The pace is very slow early on as all your skill levels are only beginning to advance. The downside is the animations. While it is an old school inspired MMO, the combat being pedestrian does take away from the enjoyment somewhat, because the animations are very basic. We’d like to see this get some improvements in the Early Access, especially for melee weapon wielders.

The Community Is Great

There’s quite a following for Legends of Aria, formerly known as Shards Online. Since its announcement and development years ago, the game has garnered quite a loyal following and most of them have been in the open beta and now of course, in Early Access. Because of that nod to open-world sandbox MMOs, the community will need to step up and lend a helping hand to new players to the genre due to the game not doing any hand holding. And so far, the community has delivered. Folks on are helpful and chatty when approached, and we’ve managed to get a lot of information in-game without ever needing to alt-Tab because other players have been great and helpful. This is such a great change from modern theme-park MMOs where social interaction with other players have become optional.

Conclusion: Legends of Aria Has Potential

Sandbox MMORPGs like these rely on a few core components to succeed. Among them are community, economy and combat. So far, the game shines in the first department, while the other two definitely either need more exploring or improvements. Another key thing to note is that if this is your first time hearing about and open world sandbox game, don’t expect linear PvE. It doesn’t exist in Legends of Aria. There’s no main story, no main quests, and while there are basic kill missions to gain some coin, players will have to make their own fun. And that could be either from being able to be whoever they want to, from merchants to fisherman, or through the game’s open world PvP with full loot on death. We saw plenty of potential in the game, but it needs a lot of work with some of its core systems, including optimizing performance issues that’s stiff affecting many.

It’s an interesting week for classic Sandbox MMORPG Legends of Aria. Firstly, the game has permanently reduced its one-time purchase fee by 10 dollars, dropping from 29.99 to 19.99 USD. The game has also launched it’s premium subscription plan, and for 10 bucks a month, players on the sub will get benefits like multiple housing plots, one extra character slot per server, and weekly store gems to spend. You’ll also receive tax exemption and exclusive premium rewards and other perks the longer you stay subscribed, so think of it as a loyalty program.

The game also teased its upcoming update, dubbed Point Release 8. The update will introduce martial abilities, a macro system, Craft Order Reward and more.

Martial abilities adopt many of the characteristics of mage casting, but unlike spells, martial abilities consume a new resource called Bloodlust. Bloodlust is generated through the use of Martial Shouts which operate similarly to a battle stance. An offensive shout allows for the generation of Bloodlust through damaging and killing opponents, whilst defensive shouts generate Bloodlust through damage taken. Only one shout may be in effect at any time.

If you’ve not heard of Legends of Aria before, here’s a refresher. The game is a living, breathing MMORPG in which you explore a true open world without limitation. Build, explore and adventure with thousands of players in a living breathing world defined by you.

Check out the updates notes here.

For MMORPG lovers, August 2019 is going to be a roller-coaster month filled with adventure everywhere. We have everything from new MMORPG launches, content updates for existing ones, and of course, that one Classic that’s coming out. Here’s the what and the when for you to mark your calendars and make plans.

DC Universe Online Nintendo Switch Launch (August 6)

Starting of the hype this month is DC Universe Online. This DC superhero MMORPG has been around for almost a decade. It has managed to prolong its longevity thanks to ports on the PlayStation and Xbox, but that’s not where their story ends. On August 6th, DCUO will be coming to the Nintendo Switch for the very first time. Not only will this make DC fans happy, but it also casts a wider net. This is especially true for first-timers who owns a Switch console and go browsing for a Western MMORPG to play that’s free, which isn’t a saturated genre on the Switch at the moment. DCUO packs good content too. From it’s in-depth superhero character creator, to its questing and group content, there’s tons to do in DCUO.

Legends of Aria Steam Launch (August 6)

If superheroes isn’t your thing, how about an old school sandbox MMORPG? Launching on the same date as DCUO is Legends of Aria. Inspired by classics like Ultima Online and EVE Online, Legends of Aria is a community focused MMORPG where every player matters. Everything from the market and economy, to the population of the server with player housing, comes down to player-driven actions and consequences. It will feel familiar to anyone who’s played games like Ultima, RuneScape and even the more modern Albion Online. It has a deep crafting system, in addition to a classless system. That means, your character can grow by learning over a hundred different skills and abilities by simply doing them. It’s a great concept and now that it’s finally coming to Steam, Legends of Aria might get more exposure that it definitely deserves.

Elder Scrolls Online: Scalebreaker DLC (August 12)

Zenimax Online Studios is keeping their promise about the Season of the Dragon. Elder Scrolls Online is embarking on a year-long cohesive story line that takes place through all four content updates in 2019. We’re way past the halfway mark with that, and on August 12th, the third installment arrives. The Scalebreaker DLC is a dungeon pack. Traditionally, ESO’s Dungeon DLCs contain a separate story that doesn’t tie in to the Chapter. This year is different of course, and since Dragons are involved, we are learning more about what’s been happening since the events of the Elsweyr Chapter. We also got a tease that Sai Sahan’s introduction will take place in this DLC, so all the more reason to check it out if you’ve been following the story. The DLC will be free to all ESO Plus members.

World of Warcraft Classic Launch (August 27)

There really isn’t much to say here except we can’t wait and we know we aren’t alone. WoW Classic has been in the much anticipated category since its announcement, and for good reason. Not only does it offer players yearning to return to the nostalgic vanilla period a gateway, but it also offers official support. That’s something most popular private vanilla servers can’t do. While it isn’t free, nostalgia always sell well especially in this genre. Just look at the amount of MMORPGs that have released classic or progression servers of the last couple of years. It’s also Blizzard’s biggest gamble yet, as it tries to reclaim its reputation from scores of players who haven’t been impressed by Battle for Azeroth. Will Classic be that savior?

Guild Wars 2: Next Living World Season Reveal (August 30)

Ending the month on a high is ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2. They will be at the Moore Theatre in Seattle on August 30th for one reason: to talk about the future. In the 45 minute presentation, we are expected to get big info drops on what’s next for the world of Tyria and Guild Wars 2. The one tease we have so far is that it involves the next Living World Season. The fifth season announcement should yield some exciting new information. But being a 45 minute presentation, surely there’s more? Many players are speculating that there may be more hints. This could be a new expansion tease, a new underwater Mount, and you feel anything new at this point would give players some hope that Guild Wars 2 is here for the long haul.

For fans of ARPG, RPG and MMO games, the next thirty or so days are going to be eventful and exciting. With plenty of upcoming launches and releases across genres and platforms, we’ve sifted through the clutter to bring you our top picks. Get stuck in.

Legends of Aria

Legends of Aria was formerly known as Shard Online. The former’s development arc was prolific and garnered huge interest from the sandbox MMORPG community. Today, Legends of Aria has come along way with plenty of gameplay improvements, both to the world and the combat. It’s been in early access since late 2018, but the game will officially launch on Steam this coming August 6th. Why should you put it on your Wishlist? Because Legends of Aria is a living breathing world defined and shaped by its player community. It is a world of dangers where bonds are forged – and broken – by players writing their own stories. The team at Citadel Studios has been hard at work responding to player feedback, and have crafted a version of Aria that is able to be enjoyed by those who wish to live the quiet life and those who want to go rogue and hunt down their fellow adventurers. Much of the game world is now safe from the harsh life of open PVP, but lawless regions still exist – and in those areas, anything goes. You might uncover untold treasures out there, but are you willing to take the risk?

Pagan Online

Wargaming’s first attempt at an ARPG game resulted in Pagan Online. It has tons of monsters to bash or curse depending on what class you play as, plus hours of gameplay to be had. You’ll play missions that progress the campaign, while unlocking new classes. Pagan Online also has a crafting system for gear and itemization, and in typical ARPG fashion, loot is king. Expect to be farming legendaries and forming builds with your favorite class and their Skill Trees in order to overcome harder difficulty challenges. Pagan Online will officially launch on Steam on August 27th, and the region block will be lifted. That means yes, you can now view the game’s Steam Store page if you previously couldn’t. While it still carries the Early Access moniker, expect the game to feel like what despite the massive amounts of updates in between. That means, bugs, imbalances and maybe a rare wipe before official launch arrives.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead

If you’ve ever played Darkest Dungeon before, you’re in for a treat. Iratus: Lord of the Dead is its evil twin. You play as the bad guy, controlling your evil minions against the hero adventurers in this roguelike RPG dungeon crawler. Iratus: Lord of the Dead will challenge your strategic prowess on all fronts, with permadeath affecting not only minions but enemies, as well. Body parts and essence are finite resources in the game’s sprawling dungeon overworld, so you’ll need to think carefully about what you conjure and how it’ll help you exact revenge. The game is now officially out on Steam Early Access (as of July 25th) and you can jump into it right now. Just be warned, early reviews seem to suggest that balance is off right now, making the game fiendishly difficult.

Re:Legend

Re:Legend incorporates the best parts from games like ARK: Survival Evolved, Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley into their very own blend of co-op multiplayer JRPG. You’ll encounter hybrid combining farming and life-simulation mechanics with strong monster-raising and multiplayer features, Re:Legend invites players to build and expand their village through a huge variety of life-simulation activities, inclusive of farming, fishing, crafting and more. Set in the world of Ethia, players awake as a legendary hero, washed ashore on Vokka Island with no memories. Players must revive their hero, and find ways to remember the forgotten past. By learning how to survive – cultivating the land, breeding and catching fish, befriending inhabitants, expanding the village, crafting weaponry and training for combat, among all the available activities – players will increase the chances of taming and raising the Magnus, magical creatures that populate this wondrous world. With a Magnus on his/her side, the adventurer will be able to venture across the land, facing threatening challenges, finding even more powerful Magnus and eventually regain lost memories. Re:Legend launches on Steam this August.

We cannot wait for MMO players of all sorts to join us on our journey.”

Legends of Aria is developed by Citadel Studios, and if you love old school MMORPGs then you may want to check it out. Inspired by classic sandbox titles like Ultima Online and RuneScape, Legends of Aria held its open beta weekend recently. We managed to jump in and get a feel for the game. We’ll share some thoughts about why this game is worth checking out. Keep in mind that after the open beta, the game will revert to being paid only, but you can get into the Early Access with a founder package here.

#1 Authentic Old School MMORPG Experience

Undoubtedly the first thing you’ll notice is the look and feel of the game that screams old school. Get used to that word. Legends of Aria is a top down MMORPG, and you’ll have to use your mouse to move. Plenty of systems also aren’t the conventional things you see today in modern MMORPGs. For example, the UI. The interface is simplistic and overall there is very little hand holding. Outside the tutorial, all you get is a magical orb that you can interact with to get hints about what to do and where to go, but that’s it. The game is open ended so players are free to begin exploring, killing or crafting.

#2 Classless and Huge Amounts of Progression

#3 Classic Combat, But Needs Work

#4 The Community So Far Has Been Welcoming

There’s quite a following for Legends of Aria, formerly known as Shards Online. Since its announcement and development years ago, the game has garnered quite a loyal following and most of them have been in the open beta.

#5 Conclusion: Legends of Aria Has Potential

We so plenty of potential in the game, but it needs a lot of work with some of its core systems, including optimizing performance issues that cropped up in the open beta.

Legends of Aria Closed Beta 1 Arriving Today – Here’s What You Need To Know

Legends of Aria will be entering its closed beta 1 on January 29th 2018. Founders and backers can begin jumping in to test this re-imagine isometric MMORPG. If you yearn for the good old days of Ultima Online, LoA is the closest thing you’ll experience that hearkens back to the good old UO days. Below is all the info you’ll need about the upcoming test.

Here’s the need to know info:

  • Founder’s Pack Sales begin on January 29th.
  • Closed Beta I testing also begins on January 29th.
  • Closed Beta I client download will become available on the dashboard on launch day.
  • Characters from Final Alpha will NOT be wiped.
  • NDA will not be in place for the Closed Beta I client.
  • Live Streaming Town Hall will take place on Friday, February 2nd at 8pm EST. See calendar for details.

New Places to Explore:

  • New World Area – Eastern Frontier: The low fields and calm beaches of the Eastern Frontier lies in the North East of Celador. Home to the mining city of Helm and the plains of Denir, the Eastern Frontier is a prosperous new land to call home.
  • Two new major cities – Helm lies on the Lume Coast at the foot of the Iron Peak mountains and a refuge for miners and crafters. Pyros Landing is located on the tip of the Southern Rim and a bustling centre for business and trade.
  • Additional World Dungeon – Contempt: Much like it’s sister dungeons Ruin and Deception, Contempt is filled will all sorts of nasty undead creatures. It is currently the only undead dungeon with a boss, the Demon Lord.
  • Catacombs Dungeon: We are excited to reopen our biggest and most dangerous dungeon, The Catacombs. This dungeon is a triggered server wide event tailored towards large groups and the final boss, Death, will require more than just numbers to defeat.

Major Systems Overhauled:

  • The Karma & Conflict System (formerly known as the criminal/flagging system) ensures that all player actions, be they positive or negative, are recognised in each players own Karma score. This system replaces all arbitrary criminal flags and ensures that risk vs reward is maintained in all aspects of play.
  • User Interface: Our goal with these changes was to keep you fully immersed in the game world by limiting the distraction of artificial UI elements.
  • Collision and Movement Improvements: One of the biggest issues from Final Alpha. Movement is now much smoother and more enjoyable.

Balance Changes

  • Balance patches across combat and magic skills.
  • Mounted Combat: The hit and run tactics of Final Alpha have been severely limited with changes to using and accessing mounts.
  • Guard Zones: The guard zones have been adjusted to encourage players to venture outside the safety of guards while still providing a very large safe space for those who want to play without the worry of being PKed.
  • Teleport Tower Changes: Teleport towers have been moved closer to the cities and the gatekeepers now protect players from attackers.
  • Fast Travel: You can purchase teleportation runes from the gatekeepers which allow mages to teleport and open portals to the towers from anywhere in the world.
  • And of course, 100’s of bug fixes for issues that were reported during Final Alpha!
